It's loadout and I think specialization based so my hope is that you get gear loadout like any extraction shooter and perhaps as you explore when you load in you can find items that skill up your perks so by the end of a run you could have all 'abilities' available. Would be a cool mechanic. Also hunt showdown is ability based. There's a few like this that have been reasonably successful and more importantly, a lot of fun. Personally I don't see any issue with their being class based abilities. The core mechanic is still loot and extraction and the gameplay can be compelling. I don't want Tarkov personally.
the fact that you're refusing to clarify what exactly runners are makes me assume this is a hero shooter and you're trying to hide it for as long as possible. really stupid, just tell us what it is, it's not like we're not gonna find out.
The problem right now, like he said, is that they've been trying to solidify what the game even is for so long now. They replied to this, and said it’s more just a set of abilities, anything else is freely customizable. Just like Titanfall 2, Battlefield classes, and Destiny
The runner class system sounds like a mistake. The one thing that had me excited for Marathon was the idea that Runners are like universal blank-slates that can be modified and built according to each individual players ideal play-style, where players have to make permanent decisions on their character stats and traits over time, resulting in a unique character for each player, Deus EX style. This class system basically sounds like Apex Legends style hero characters with set abilities that players minimally tweak but are fundamentally the same character. I’m not looking forward to the idea of running into the same runner class as me, just with a different battle pass skin and minor gear differences.
I'm still not quite clear if marathon will be using a "hero" format like apex or something more akin to hunt where you have somewhat customizable characters or if the runners will follow an archetype structure like the finals or brink.
as he said, whatever hero you choose it will be customizable with all the gear you get in game, this is not apex legend where you get in game with a hero and pick up only weapons, is not a battle royal.
I'd be surprised if it isn't like The Finals. An archetype that you build around. But also with factions, similar to sponsors in The Finals. But I'm just guessing.
Brink, now there's a throwback. It sounds like the latter, though whether these classes are like runner "models" with similar shape language like Destiny or are, I dunno, clones of a templated character with a voice and personality remains to be seen.
Wow Brink! I was so stoked for that game, menus and character creation were great, but the game itself, janky AF. Hated it, and hated hating it. What a shame of a game that was.

Way to not sell the concept of the game to me, Ziegler. ’It’s not for everyone…’, ’A little game we like to call Marathon’. It’s as if you want the game to tank before it hits the shelves. Thanks for undercutting the major brand ’Marathon’ and with it, my childhood.
I’m hyped for this game, mostly because of the design in the teaser and concept art. Really hope you don’t ditch that style. I’m totally fine with an extraction shooter in this design and setting. Sounds awesome, and Bungie being behind it is a huge plus. But it’s kinda worrying that the lead dev didn’t mention the why of the game-the big idea behind it. Every great game has one, and not hearing it feels off. Sure, NDAs and all, and yeah, you’re excited about the world, stories, and 'lots of consumables,' but that’s what every dev says. We all saw Concord not long ago. Anyway, good luck-I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
Kinda sounds like how you can equip different stratagems in Helldivers 2. Codename Thief could have a similar ability to Truesight for Void Hunters in Destiny 2. I wonder if the Thief (instead of stealing direct items) takes a random item and turns it into scrap (like in Risk of Rain). Maybe an on-map crafter/upgrade table to use? all just ideas. would be cool though.
I feel so mixed about this project, because the original Marathon trilogy holds a special place in my heart. It was basically the first and only game series that I played with my late father (or rather, I'd watch over his shoulder as he played). I'm so glad to see the IP again, but all information I've seen thus far feels so alien... I really hope that it doesn't disrespect the foundation and end up feeling like a random game that decided to just slap an existing brand on it for cheap marketing.
Played Marathon trilogy for the first time last year and loved it, so I was expecting something more singleplayer with emphasis on good story. So I hope at least for good lore.
Regardless of playstyle etc, I want to see Joyeuse and hopefully Leela, she kind of got fringed in the original trilogy, might want to see Durandal/Thoth-Durandal hybrid but also very scared of character assassination.

@@TipppedScales1015 extraction shooters have no competition. We just need a good one. The genre is amazing, unfortunately we are really only stuck with Tarkov or Hunt Showdown which aren't amazing but not horrible. All the other ones are horrible. Arc Raiders and Marathon have potential
If you can't allow the player to fully customize their avatar from 0-100 including appearance and abilities your doing things wrong. People don't want to be forced to choose between pre set classes to any extent, all this does is take away from the immersion individuality whilst simultaneously creating separation amongst the player base known as classism. This issue immediately became problematic in Destiny where people would refuse to try certain classes and or play alongside certain ones, doing so innately produces unbalance and divide.
I fail to see where he says its not for bungie fans? He said not for "Everybody" BRs are not for "Everybody" horror games are not for "Everybody" extraction shooters are not for "Everybody" lmao i swear you people just try to find the smallest things to hate these days
That's probably the most important message in this video, honestly. Extraction shooters are for masochists. If you don't like a challenge and get turned off by dying a lot and losing your equipment quickly, you genuinely may hate it. Most extraction games have this warning so when a player first starts they know that it's normal and not just that they suck.
Really excited for this game, but I do have some thoughts. 1. I’m not sure how I feel about having pre-defined Runners, I wanted to be able to customize my own Runner to my own specifications, but if each Runner has a large suite of customization options (both cosmetic and tactical), I can get over it. 2. OG Marathon fans like myself have fond memories of playing against each other in netmap matches. It would be nice if we can have that kind of arena-style PvP gameplay outside the main extraction shooter mode. No loot brought in, no loot brought out, just find weapons on the battlefield, and dominate the other guy. Doesn’t necessarily have to be available at launch, but I think it would be a nice addition. 3. The vastness and richness of the lore of Marathon is entirely unique even 30 years after its heyday, and it needs to be both preserved and brought out in this game. It’s fine to add new things to it in order to appeal to an audience that probably wasn’t alive for the original trilogy, but retconning anything would probably not be appreciated by the OG fans. 4. Some people won’t have a crew to play Marathon with, and being one person playing against groups of three will not be fun. There should be a system to make it so solo players will only face other solo players, and groups of 2 or 3 will only face groups of 2 or 3, respectively. EDIT: Adding point 4, changed the language of point 3 to feel less like an ultimatum while still maintaining the meaning.
Really miss when game dev companies tried to make something new. We finally got passed the "every game is a battle royale" phase and now we're entering the "every game is an extraction shooter and/or every game is a hero-shooter" phase. @@Pphantomn people don't like heroes not because they have fixed abilities and gear. All that Bungie does now related to it is just trying to reframe it for the sake of damage control. Those are heroes you described, there will be heroes in the game. I can give you an example. Look at Delta Force if you want to know what we will get in Marathon. They are heroes.
@@alexander3025it's really up to interpretation. But the fact they didn't come out and just say "no, they aren't heroes" does raise red flags. However, I really don't see how they could be heroes; They may have a fixed skill that defines their playstyle, but everything else seems customizable like loadout, build and appearance (that is defined by the loot you wear) To me, this whole thing draws paralels to Warhammer 40k SM2 on the class system, with the loot of destiny. And who would have guessed? Destiny also has 3 customizable classes, with certain set of abilities But neither of those are classified as hero shooters, are they? Why?
@@Pphantomn there are 2 aspects: gameplay and narrative. You say that those aren't heroes by giving an example of wide customization. But that's gameplay perspective. For example Concord got backslash for its heroes not because they weren't customizable, would be weird to ask Overwatch clone to have different approach. It got hate for heroes because they failed to create attractive heroes and story from the narrative standpoint. And if we take the narrative aspect, games like Valorant, Apex or recent Delta Force are all shooters with heroes, even though they are different genres of shooters. Look at Delta Force, deeply customizable heroes that change appearance depending on what gear they wear, with fixed set of abilities. Yet they are totally heroes. So when people say they don't want heroes it is just manifestation of doubt that Bungie can create interesting or even not repulsive characters, or that it will be strongly monetized. And now it clearly looks that after Concord had flopped, Bungie was doing damage control with their "totally not heroes" news and leaks. But they are, and in my opinion modern Bungie won't be able to make them interesting. Also people are tired and charged with recent dei stuff. So they will probably get a strong backslash. Should have been doing clone constructor instead.
Really loving the art direction of the game, seems like a natural advancement of human technology seen in the original games. I'm definitely wishlisting this. Take all the time you guys need. If anyone on the team sees this, please be careful with the way you implement the Runners as "heroes". As an example, a lot of people less want something like the Legends from Apex Legends and more like the Pilot classes in Titanfall 2. Less quirky characters, more blank slate.
No offense to anyone working on this and I truly hope I’m wrong but I feel the statement “it’s a extraction shooter” is going to have the same stigma as “it’s a 5v5 hero shooter” to most people now, and especially since this seems to be a hero/specialist extraction shooter at some level the future of Marathon doesn’t seem too bright.
Video man said it was class based, idk about the stigma thing I always thought extraction style games were still niche in the same vein as fighting games with the only big ones being games like hunt showdown, escape from tarkov, and darkest dungeon.
"It's a game that's not for everybody... hopefully that sounds appealing to you," sums it up pretty well. Releasing an extraction shooter at least a year from now that has to hold Bungie aloft is a hell of a gamble.
Hilarious how the vidoc from last year said next time we heard info there would be gameplay. Good to see they didn't even keep to that promise, really good sign for the game's health! Can't wait
Artistically. Marathon is a piece of art i'm looking the most forward too. the announcement trailers design language & graphic realism just left me speechless. if that can be delivered on in a finished product it will consume all of my time in gaming.

Oh yeah this game is definitely in development hell
That explains why no gameplay here
the fact that you're refusing to clarify what exactly runners are makes me assume this is a hero shooter and you're trying to hide it for as long as possible. really stupid, just tell us what it is, it's not like we're not gonna find out.
The problem right now, like he said, is that they've been trying to solidify what the game even is for so long now. The worst thing they could do is come out with a big "so here's Marathon" thing only for it to turn out that the game isn't that at all when it launches. So now he's stuck making a "we think we're getting close to something coherent" video.

not incredibly fond of the hero shooter vibes that runners are giving off. i was really looking forward to building up and progressing my own character instead of using a premade one.
They replied to this, and said it’s more just a set of abilities, anything else is freely customizable. Just like Titanfall 2, Battlefield classes, and Destiny
This video gives me a “please buy our game so we don’t close down” vibe
The runner class system sounds like a mistake. The one thing that had me excited for Marathon was the idea that Runners are like universal blank-slates that can be modified and built according to each individual players ideal play-style, where players have to make permanent decisions on their character stats and traits over time, resulting in a unique character for each player, Deus EX style.
This class system basically sounds like Apex Legends style hero characters with set abilities that players minimally tweak but are fundamentally the same character. I’m not looking forward to the idea of running into the same runner class as me, just with a different battle pass skin and minor gear differences.
i agree
Please for the love of Christ don’t make it a hero shooter.
did you even watch the video???
They gotta sell you more hero’s and skins somehow
and not extraction shooter too
This Is not a hero shooter, that's confirmed. It's class based
I'm still not quite clear if marathon will be using a "hero" format like apex or something more akin to hunt where you have somewhat customizable characters or if the runners will follow an archetype structure like the finals or brink.
as he said, whatever hero you choose it will be customizable with all the gear you get in game, this is not apex legend where you get in game with a hero and pick up only weapons, is not a battle royal.

TLDR
They confirmed they're working on an extraction shooter that has classes.

However, I really don't see how they could be heroes;
They may have a fixed skill that defines their playstyle, but everything else seems customizable like loadout, build and appearance (that is defined by the loot you wear)
To me, this whole thing draws paralels to Warhammer 40k SM2 on the class system, with the loot of destiny.
And who would have guessed? Destiny also has 3 customizable classes, with certain set of abilities
But neither of those are classified as hero shooters, are they?
I hope the music is great. I loved the art style and music from the trailer.
I feel like this Game just gonna kill Bungie.
Why no vidoc? Bungie is usually good at messaging, 10 mins of the director talking to the camera (seemingly off the cuff) is not what I expected
