    That was really interesting! I never knew. Everything is so much easier today. Very enjoyable video, glad I discovered a new channel! I use rosemary with mint and lavender spray I make myself. Works a charm against mosquito.

    What you did here is very good. I would do more videos like this.
    The ressons why is;
    Becuase it shows your knowledge on the subject matter. Is much more interesting then your other videos.
    You broke the infomation down into sections. That show what you know how to present the infomation well.
    This video is a prime example of a nitch market for people who want to know about Norways history and how what we can use it to help us survive.
    Great job on this one.

    Great video Martin! We always had a root cellar growing up. It was how we stored all our root vegetables and canned goods that we canned for the winter. You are right that a space that size could store a lot of food. Love your videos keep them coming! ~Dawn

    • @NorwegianWoods
      @NorwegianWoods  8 років тому

      Hello Dawn. Nice of you to stop by. I have never had an actual root cellar where I have lived but we had a cool room in the basement that did the job. A lot of older houses around here have a hatch in the kitchen floor that leads down to a kind of root cellar.

    There was a lot of good & hard work laying all that stone you showed. Can only wonder what the houses looked like. Norway & Finland have a fantastic history of log homes. Is solar power and off grid (not connected to electrical power companies) living popular in Norway? It is a trend here in the U.S.that is growing. Your videos are very well made and enjoyable, thanks again.

    • @NorwegianWoods
      @NorwegianWoods  8 років тому

      +Rick Green It sure was a lot of work to build houses back then. Most of the old log houses in my area has been insulated and covered in wooden planks over the years so I don't know what they used to look like. Solar and wind power is catching on slowly here in Norway. I think that is because electric power is relatively cheap. We have a lot of rivers and lakes with hydropower plants up here.

    Enjoyed this video a lot Martin, its a very good subject you bring here, who knows the physics of keeping the cold knows then knows how to stay warm.. Almost wondered if you were in tresticklan, there is the same kind of old abandoned villages that became forest at some places... happy to learn about the history of it. Take care- Mathieu

    • @NorwegianWoods
      @NorwegianWoods  7 років тому +1

      I learned a few really useful things when I was researching this stuff. To be able to stay warm and cool is often the same as to stay alive. This is a little north of Tresticklan. We have a lot of these places around my area. When machines took over most of the work in the forests and farms a lot of people moved into the larger towns and left these small farms to be reclaimed by nature. I got the impression that more of these places (Torp) are kept in Sweden.
      Thanks for watching - Martin

    • @NorwegianWoods
      @NorwegianWoods  7 років тому

      It is nice when someone takes the time and makes these small signs with information on these places. There are a few of them around here as well. So much history that can get lost when people stops telling the old stories. Nice video by the way :)

    I know im a bit late, but i still think some People may read this. The cheap hammock is also a great alternative for a gear sling. When it comes to "bushcraft" refrigerator; alot of packs have a separable lower compartment you can easily turn into a cooling compartment with 2-3of cheap supermarket cooling bags or a fitting soft cooling bag. Also use small frozen(0,5 liter or so) drinking water bottles as coolpacks so when they warm up you can drink/empty them to have extra water/less weight.

    Hei Martin. For mange år siden så var jeg ofte på speiderleir om sommeren og da lagde vi kjølegrop. det er et hul I bakken. ...ca1.5m dypt. med plank så en presenning og torv på toppen som vi vannet noen ganger for dagen. Dette fungerte veldig bra. Takk for en god video.

    Say Heah, A while back I bought a Polish Military Issue Compass, It was used, But in very good condition. It comes with a Leather Pouch to carry it in and it's attached to paracord so I can wear it around my neck for a directional compass, Yeah, I like it. The only thing the poles are marked in Polish, But no problem. I learned what North is so the rest I figured out. But it's a good quality made out if a strong type of plastic of sort. But easy to use and it's very accurate and military approved.,,.

      +Simon's Discoveries I have just been to Finland once and I didn't spend a long time there, but from what I have heard it is very similar to Norway. Norway is a long country with a lot of variation. It is 3000km from south to north so it can be useful to do a little research before you come here. Thanks a lot for watching :)

    Let me help with the science behind the wet cloth, that cools down its content.
    It's pretty straight forward:
    Water needs heat to turn from its liquid state to a vapor state.
    So, it absorbs heat from its closest surroundings, in this case, the "body" (i.e. the can of soda), which on its turn, looses heat and stays cool.

    Someone has probably asked before, but what happened to the three fingers on your right hand? And also, where do you get all this knowledge from? is it from older relatives? or is it something you studied?
    btw, great video, i learned alot.

    Hey there! I love your videos, they are very informative and well filmed.
    I was wondering if I could get your opinion: I will have a week vacation from 11th of June and I can get to either Kristiansand or Langesund/Larvik cheaply with the ferries from Denmark. I will be going to get some peace and quiet in the *Norwegian Woods* where I will be hiking around and sleeping in a hammock. I see that there is less light pollution around Kristiansand which would make for better astrophotography, but that is only a smaller prioririty. Langesund/Larvik seems to have more hiking routes close by, according to ut.no.
    Can you help me make up my mind? Which place has the nicer woods and hikes?
    Thanks in advance, and keep making these great videos!
    - Johan

      Thank you for the kind words my friend :)
      I really don't know the area around Kristiansand all that well. If you are able to move around a little I think the area around Langesund and Larvik might be a really good choice. You could send these ladies a message and ask for advise ua-cam.com/users/kajaq7 I think they live in that area.
      I don't think Norway is the best place for astrophotography in the summer time. The further north you travel the longer the days get in the summer. If you go all the way to the very north the sun never goes down. It is something very special to experience.
      You will probably find some nice nature with either choice. I have heard that Telemark is the most diverse part of Norway. It stretches all the way from the coast, trough deep woods up to the high mountains.
      Let me know if you post any videos from your trip :)

    Jeg bruker selv myra som kjøleskap. Legg mat, drikker eller annet i en plastpose/vanntettpose. Grav et lite hull i myra eller løft av torv, legg maten nedi og legg over torv igjen, men husk å merke plassen med en gren eller en stein o.l så man finner igjen sakene.

    Fin video med mye historie. Teltet funker bra det ser jeg. Fikk samme følelse selv da jeg satte det opp, at det var lite, men når jeg begynte å bruke det oppdaget jeg at det var godt om plass, til og med på vintern med vedovn. Egner seg best om vintern, men også fint om sommern når det er lyst ute om natta og du vil ha det litt mørkere for å sove. Uansett er myggen plagsom de første nettene før en begynner å lukte selv, da holder de avstand de prippne små jævlene ;) Ellers så bruker jeg et myggnett over hode når jeg ligger i posen, funker greit, sov med caps så slipper du nettet i ansiktet.
    Du har virkelig fine områder rundt deg, mye bedre enn herover.

      +NorwegianBushcraft Takk for det. Det var helt grei plass når jeg fikk lagt meg på plass der inne. Jeg så veideoene du laget av din og det var de som gjorde at jeg fikk lyst til å teste den ut. Ikke noe å si på prisen på disse heller. Jeg har et enmanns myggnett som jeg tror vil funke fint. Det kan hende litt myggspiral og myggolje hadde hjulpet en del også.
      Det er noen fine plasser her nede. Bare å si ifra hvis du skulle føle behov for å ta en tur ut i østfoldskogene :)

    • @NorwegianWoods

      I think it is best suited for winter time. The canvas will hold up good against sparks. It did not keep the mosquitos out and I doubt it would hold me dry on a rainy day. As you say it is not all that roomy and pretty heavy. As a winter shelter with a fire in front of it I think it could be a nice option. Thanks for stopping by :)

    Min far jobbet for den norske regjeringen i Afrika når jeg var på high school. Det er der jeg lærte å nyte bushcraft. Jeg har også brukt en sommer i Finland og mitt første kyss var en svensk jente! Jeg ser at svenskene sendte sin nasjonale fugl over å bry deg i teltet :) Forresten, er det en god historie om fingrene dine? Beklager å spørre. Og ja, jeg bruker Google Translator, så jeg er sikker på at dette norsk er forferdelig!

      Good to hear that you have been experiencing Scandinavia and the Swedish girls. The story about my fingers is the good old one about kids playing with explosives. A blast cap went of while I was holding it. I was 14 back then.

    also if you soak your clay pots and let the clay absorb some water it should last longer and work better

    • @NorwegianWoods
      @NorwegianWoods  8 років тому

      That sounds like a good thing to do. The more water the clay and sand contains the longer it will stay cool. For longer periods you got to add more water to keep it going.

    Great video´s mate, lots of usable and historical info.
    That mini emergency hammock is great for daytrips, it´s standard in my backpack. The only minus is the synthatic rope that hardly hold the knots and caused hard landings on the ground. What I do now is using one simple slipping knot and stick a small twig in the loop before pulling the rope and putting pressure on it. Works perfect. And afterwards it´s very easy to remove the knot. Just pull out the twig and pull the rope.
    See ua-cam.com/video/u1kzCHyBqdA/v-deo.html (from min 14:50) what I mean.
    Anyway, thanks for sharing. CU
