Avocado is my go-to thickener for smoothies, ice cream, pudding, brownies (thick and fudgy!), and soups. Works every time!
I use sodium alginate. A natural product extracted from seaweed. The first time I used it. My husband thought I thickened my dish with cornstarch.
TY!!! Also coconut flour mixed first with cold water before adding
This is exactly what I wanted to know !! Somehow I could figure out the function of cheese and cream cheese by myself but other tips are just eye-opening to me. Thank you !!!
I’ve used a product called Thick-it-Up for years which is a combo of these ingredients; browns beautifully for a roux.
Thanks for the great tips again. I will definitely try some of these. I have used Lupin Flour in roux with great success & I discovered that I really like the taste of it. The only problem is i have not been able to figure out how healthy it is.
Lupin flour is very healthy and keto friendly. Though it has total carbs in it, it is very high in fiber which comes out of the total when counting net carbs.
Hey, pro tip for gravy. Roast a punnet of Button mushrooms in the oven for about 20 minutes. Take them out and straightaway place into a container so you can stick blend them into mush while still hot. Add a bit of boiling water if too thick.
Thickest, most mushroomy gravy ever!
Hi, thank you so much for sharing! It sound so yummy! Such a simple idea I would not have thought of on my own. 😊
For years now I’ve been puréeing a portion of whatever I’m making and adding it back into the sauce to thicken. I do this with ground beef, onions, mushrooms, garlic cloves…almost anything works.
Be aware than konjac/glucomannan can also be very slimy if you use too much
Really good tips. I’m wanting to try carnivore for 30 days strictly so I’ll use heavy cream, butter and cheese at first and then my gelatin I bought as a last resort.
That was very helpful. Thanks.
I think there's a good technique that involves stirring egg whites and sugar substitutes, slightly adding the sugar as you progessively mix it more and more, but then you have to add the flour, I use almond flour which is more dense, thus I don't know which kind of consistensy I'll end up having at the end, I might try it later
Agar-agar is definitely for things like desserts. I’ve tried thickening a gravy with it and it didn’t thicken until the gravy was fairly cold.
I want to try egg tolk to thicken cream sauce for cauliflower cheese. See how it goes
Psyllium husk is the best go to
+ citrus fibre, potato fibre, gluten, lupin flour, gummi arabicum, ground flax seed, tara gum, bamboo fibre, carob seed powder
Outstanding....................
Thank you I had know Idea lifesaver!!!!
Thank you !!!
Here are 10 alternative (some for keto) to replace cornstarch: #2. As for keto.....How can one make it less carb per slice? What flour? Add some oat fiber or something?
What about almond flour?
For me being gluten free isn't enough, the gums used in gluten free products (in addition to psyllium husk which is worse than gluten for me) cause me as much discomfort as gluten. I know this is a keto site but info about how to thicken soups naturally is very helpful, thank you.
Hello. Are u able to consume gluten free oats? Quaker Oats apparently make gluten-free oats and you can buy a personal blender that comes with an extra mini blender, or if you have a coffee grinder you can use that- and blend or grind the oats into oat flour. It’s a lovely flour but it won’t rise like all purpose flour etc unless you’re adding yeast and so on. So if you’re not too keen on baking but you are looking for a healthy and gluten-free alternative I suggest oat flour. I like it!
Thank you!
Locust bean gum, a tsb or two in sauce to thicken.
Tomato paste seems to work quite well.
Good Stuff!!!
If you are not lactose intolerant, a little whey protein works pretty well as a thickener.
Thank you. 🌺🌺🌺
I'm diabetic. I like my Beef stew thick and creamy. How can I do this without all the carbs??😢
I use quinoa to thicken my soup
Unfortunately quinoa is not low carb enough to be incorporated on a keto diet.
Same! Much healthier ! Also flax seed ..
At least its lower than wheat flour that's 47.6 grams per 1/4 cup or arrowroot flour that's 56.4 grams of the same. Even coconut flour is 38 grams. Quinoa flour is only 21 net carbs per 1/4 cup. Plus its very high protein and loaded with nutrition. Used only as the thickener is not using much at all. Maybe not considered low enough to be called keto friendly in a loaf of bread but its better than the so called keto recipes that call for arrowroot flour that I've seen on UA-cam.
What can I use for Salisbury steak other than xanthum gum?
Citrus fibre if you can get it.
Arrow root has too many carbs
What do i use for chicken wings?
You don't need to use anything on wings. Here's one of our most popular wings recipes that get nice and crispy in the oven.
www.dietdoctor.com/recipes/sweet-and-sticky-keto-chicken-wings
Wings are pretty thick right straight off the chicken.
Could you use gum Arabic?
What about psyllium powder?
Psyllium powder is usually put into baking goods rather than using it to thicken sauces. It gives things like bread and cake keto substitutes more lift and airiness. Another thickening agent you can use in puddings is ground up chia seeds. A lot of people object to the way chia seeds make a gelatin like substance, but grinding them up helps with that.
@@rikwen96 Thanks
@@rikwen96 How much Psyllium powder would you use to replace cornstarch in a no-flour cake recipe? Is it 1:1?
@@duncanjames914 It is actually half as much. So if you normally use 2 tablespoons of cornstarch you would substitute 1 tablespoon of psyllium powder. Hope that helps.
@@rikwen96 Thanks kindly!
Xanthan gum is artificial additive
The first 3 ingredients you mentioned are toxic. If you have digestive issues they will cause great pain.
Did you know that all baking powder has cornstarch in it?
No it doesn't. Depends on where in the world you are
@@cassieoz1702 I suppose that is probably true, but I think it is in the stuff we buy in the US.
Its easy enough to make your own with baking soda and cream of tarter.

You've forgotten about Tahini , Blended chickpeas , blended Favabeans . Correct me please if I'm wrong !
Tahini is just fat, you could use any. But you don't want to use beans on a keto diet, too many carbs obviously.
