It's so great that all those nasturtiums have provided great biomass for the compost! You might have found the mesh from the arch useful for covering beds against burrowing or digging pests. I find it useful sometimes to put a small composter (even a ring of chicken wire) right on a garden bed and make the compost in place. It sacrifices that bit on bed and may take a little longer but is easier than moving compost materials/finished too far. Huw Richards did an experiment on composting in the pathways. What a transformation you have made this year! Congratulations!
I use my rake for everything in my garden! For me, it's just so much easier to do a lot of different jobs with it rather than trading out tools. I even have one that is half as wide to get into tight spaces.
Hi Seren, I would keep the netting from the arch, it’s going to be so useful for growing things up like peas, or for protecting plants from birds. I had some similar so I made some wooden frames and stapled the netting to the frame. Now I just put the frames out wherever I want them.
@@crocketp I might have to try big pot! I’m just thinking back to spring / summer and seeing all of those bees all over it 🥲 I definitely can’t get rid of it 🥲🐝
I found a local carpet and tile store that was more than happy for me to come and grab their pallets, either that or hardware stores might be happy for people to take their used pallets, should be possible to find a bunch for free. It's all looking excellent!
I agree Seren, wood chip makes an allotment so much better. I love walking on newly laid wood chip. The allotment version of a deep pile carpet ! Raking and hoeing are my favourite activities, I find them so relaxing. Thanks for posting.
Wow - what a difference! You have inspired me to plant a dahlia garden this year - yours have been looking so lovely. Keep up the hard work, and looking forward to seeing the area at the end of the plot all done in due course!
You must feel so proud of all that you have accomplished in less than a year on the plot.🤩😍 Now you can plan, plan, plan for late winter into spring! And, I have no doubt, you will have the back whipped into shape before you know it!👍🌟👏
I think the only way to get on top of that back area is to dig it. It's back breaking work but dig out the bramble roots and the bindweed, remove as much from the soil as possible. Next year you will start with a clear ground then continue with no dig. I did that last winter and only had minimal bindweed and perennial weeds which was easy.
See if you can get some shredded paper from a local place and add it to your compost. It decomposes very fast, adds food for the microbes and worms to make a decent compost. Most inks are now vegetable based, so that shouldn't be a concern. A tarp/large cardboard sheets over the pile will keep it from stinking (anaerobic). You've done an amazing job changing what was a weedy mess to something to be proud of. 👍🇨🇦 Comfrey leaves make great cover for the beds, block weed seeds over winter.
Seren, your allotment looks great! You have worked so hard and accomplished so much. The wood chip paths makes the allotment look so neat, you’ve manured the garden beds making them neat as well. I enjoyed seeing the birds in today’s video. I’m sure you will find something to secure your bird feeder on, too.
What an excellent episode! Had all my favorite elements: Tidying up in speed mode, adding to the compost pile, blanketing spent beds, harvesting perfect things, and WOW your paths! More handsome than Paul Newman! Felt good to watch, thank you Seren. Think I’ll go out and do some needed raking here now.
Brilliant video your plot is beautiful and well done on clearing the arches so sad when they fell over Lots to do over winter and lots to look forward to spring 😊xx
Jays adore acorns and peanuts. Plot is looking fab serene. The heap at the back is taking up a huge amount of space though. Definitely bays are better for when you get into making compost and look neater too
Pleased you are keeping the Comfrey as it's a really useful plant and bees etc are attracted to the pretty flowers. The plant has so many uses which are all very beneficial. With so many slugs and snails this season I found placing the rough leaves around newly planted plants quite an effective barrier. Even when the leaves have gone brown and wilted they still retained some roughness to deter slugs. Although obviously is better to keep replacing with fresher leaves. It's best to wear gloves when handling the leaves/plant as it can irritate the skin. Perhaps also wear a long Sleeved top for the same reason. Seren when you stood proudly to show off your freshly laid paths I still think your pond is worth moving to the front of your plot and in it's place have another vegetable bed. You mentioned bind weed in amongst and around the pond so perhaps a big change would resolve this and having a small pond closer to the front with some of your favourite flowers around it would be beautiful and become a lovely area to sit to view your plot and all the life that will be attracted to your pond. Just a thought
Seren! What a great job! It looks so open now. I’m also clearing my garden for the winter. I gathered fallen leaves from the front of my house. I put them in a large trash can and mulched them down with my weed wicker (trimmer). I put some in my compost bin (as brown matter) and the rest I put in my garden beds to help suppress weeds during the winter. I’ll be doing that until there are no leaves to sweep up. I’m thinking of planting garlic, but I haven’t had much success before. Any tips? Anyway. I’ve enjoyed your journey with the allotment. I’m looking forward to seeing more, especially your winter projects. ❤
What a satisfying day you had. Between the clearing of beds, weeding, manuring and wood chipping, your plot is looking great. My nasturtiums overwhelmed my tomatoes last year and I swore I wouldn't grow them again. But if I can find a place where they could go mad I would have all that mass for compost. And I suspect it would break down quite quickly.
Thanks Seren, I love your videos - they're so lovely, calming and serene (like your name 😂). I watch a few allotment UA-camr channels and yours is my favourite 🌻
Hi Seren, Plot's looking good. All that hard work has paid off. You can still utilise the arch for making hoops for your beds or plant stakes. If you buy a bird station, I advise you to paint it with hammerite metal paint, it will rust. I know it is powder coated, but the powder coat peels off with the weather. I just spent hours wire brushing mine and painting it. Keep up the good work.
I’d suggest using thick black plastic sheeting in the back. It’s not permeable, so will help kill weeds by not letting air or water through. Also, when possible, it would be good to add more chips in the new area. Being so close to high weed-pressure, you will have an easier time if the barrier is thick. Best of luck!
wow you work so hard kudos to you ,when you eventually clear the back of the plot have you thought about putting up some builders mesh on the metal fencing I think it would help to stop a lot of the weeds n brambles getting thru I have it on my hedge and it helps a lot and saves me a lot od butting hedges back
Who knew Nasturtiams could be ground cover? I've seen the three bays built with pallets and then covered in a dark heavy duty plastic cover. I don't really have the space for that much. Jays chase and attack other birds, at least they do here in Colorado. I have a hedge where the little birds can hide from Blue Jays. We had our first snow yesterday. It wasn't much accumulation, but it pretty much signals the end of anything considered a growing season. Nights are below freezing which is the other signal. Time to clean out like you're doing and waiting for Spring. 5 months of impatient finger tapping! Lol!
I'm so impressed at the massive change you've delivered to the plot in just 1 year 🙂👍 As to all the stuff growing at the back of the plot ... that can all be chopped down for the Compost Bin, then weed fabric / thick black plastic placed over the area & held down so it doesn't blow away and so it will cover the ground & help smother / kill off what's below the soil ... it may take all of next year, but in the meantime, you could grow potatoes in tubs on top of that weed fabic so the space is productive next year.
A small suggestion, I would advise cardboard covering your manured beds, it will help with two things, it will keep down the weeds that might pop up during the winter, it will reduce leaching out of the nutrients over winter due to the winter rains and as a bonus, you would be creating a nice dark and 'warm' habitat for the worms , which will encourage them to work the manure into your soil in a more efficient way.
Don't take the arch to the tip. The curved bits can make low cloches and the straight bits make strong short stakes and markers. Cheap arches need VERY strong supports or they won't last five minutes in the wind.
I'm so excited for next year already! I've learned so much from you already, so I know there's more to come! Maybe making a PVC trellis would do well? It's affordable and you can beef it up however you want to hold the weight.
Was thinking why hadn't you clened up the back area, then remembered that you had a whole plot to clear, organize, plant and manage, plus work in your job. Have had a time when my main path had 5 ft tall nettle, but the beds were free of it.
Ive taken on a new plot this year, im totally new to all this so watching you has been helpful .my plot was a dumping ground like yours ,so much plastic rubbish and wood ..im getting there slowly, where do you get your mulch from ? And does it stop slugs! ? Thanks
I am always so happy when I see a new video from you!!!

Wow. Plot is transformed! Looks great, Seren. Well done
Lovely to see you back! Try to keep your woodchip as thick as possible on your paths to keep the weeds down-the thicker the better❤
Catching up on your recent videos Seren and wow you put a shift in here!! Can’t believe how much those nasturtiums loved it there 🧡
“Really good looking wood chips” 🪵😅

I got totally addicted to picking up the nasturtium seeds . A lot will go into the communal seed box . Doing great keep at it
All looking very organised and tidy-so satisfying 😊

And then in the spring when you are ready to use the beds, you can move the cardboard to either the footpaths or into your compost bins.
Comfrey is one of my favourites to make a tea fertiliser . It’s absolutely essential for your compost . So don’t get rid of it. ☺️

If you cant get shallot sets, buy organic shallots from the supermarket which will work just as well, and is generally a lot cheaper!
Love watching your posts. Do you remember the name of the plum tomatoes you grew in this video?
You should get a strimmer and cut the back down then cover it over, it’ll rot down faster❤
It is incredible that you have woodchip and manure available at the plot. Is it free?
Can you woodchip the shared path between the allotments or is that not allowed?

Jealous of the amount of free wood chip and manure you get. We get absolutely nothing on our allotment.
