Your "not being a UA-camr" is one of the best things about this channel! So proud of you for all the work you've done since that first "worst plot ever?" video. It's been a fun journey and can't wait to see what comes next!
Seren you can remove the chicken wire when the bulbs sprout. You can also sprinkle red pepper flakes around them, squirrels don’t like capsaicin. Your dahlias are gorgeous.
I like that you also go down the allotment and do nothing but watch the birds. One of my favourite things during the months when there's not really much to do. A couple of beers and just relax. Occasionally the deer may wander through also.
Winter in my part of 🇨🇦 means no outdoor gardening until April/May so I am looking forward to seeing what you are doing over the next few months! Thank you so much for sharing your plot with us, Seren.❤
Maybe cover over the plastic pots during winter if you're going to leave them outside. They can get very brittle during frosty nights. We keep ours in one of those lift up lid rubberised bins. :)

I would use wire cutters to cut bigger holes in the chicken wire where you need bigger gaps. Then you wouldn't need to buy another piece of wire. Unless you plan to plant a lot of bigger bulbs. Just a thought.
fun fact about bees they scan the area and decide which flower species they harvest(how many flowers of the same species there are matters) then on their way back to the hive they harvest them. So its not necessarily that they like or dislike a flower, it could be that its not worth it because there are not many of them in the area. Also depending on the shape of the bee and flower they might not be compatible.

Plant your garlic and strawberries in the same bed. If you put the strawberries in the spaces between your garlic, they can grow together just fine. Might have to fertilize a bit more but they should be fine.
Have you thought of surrounding the pond with stones and the planting flowers between them? It would look lovely. I’m still harvesting tomatoes in my garden! We’ve had warm weather this fall and no rain (New York City is under a drought watch!). But my tomatoes are doing well. I will be giving them another week before harvesting the remainder so they can ripen indoors. I’m also mulching the garden beds with leaves for the winter. @@Julia-m2p7x thanks Julia! I will do a lil experiment with that I think 👀 I’ll put some bulbs in pots too to see what happens 🥰 thanks so much for watching! 💖
Seren, I know how the gloomy days and weeks can get you down, but being outdoors always helps. Being in a garden is even better! In northern Canada where I live, winter is really settling in now. I love watching you planning out your beds for next year and deciding what you’ll do. ❤️❄️🇨🇦
Go garlic! Save some of your favorites next summer for planting in the fall and you never have to buy garlic again! Love snapdragons...even though I have had frost and snow, the snaps still bloom. Suggest about the pond: cut down growth around the pond and put black plastic over the bindweed now and fasten around the edges to omit light, pallet on top so it doesn't blow away and forget it for 6 mths to a year. Look at the floor that Jessie at Plot 37 put in her greenhouse. It might work for you over weed barrier. What a transformation you made this year!
if you got rid of that frame thing that the bamboo is sitting in you could get another small bed in there - strawberries? Or double the brassica bed? Can't wait to see the transformation of the end of the plot!
I think I'd move the compost out for a mo (giving it all a turn), strim that whole back section down, fix a clear polycarbonate-sheet to that fence, run a 2' deep bed along the fence and put the compost area back (and treat it like the most important thing on the plot). - But that's only if I had the time, energy, money... and your plot.
It seems very difficult to grow bell peppers in Britain, so maybe overwintering is the hack required, so that they have a head start. Haven't done it myself, as i don't have anywhere to overwinter them, somewhere both warm and light.
Are you going to make a bird feeding station? as I’m sure you know it’s good to feed them in the winter. I will enjoy watching your progress on the improvements to the plot you have done an amazing job so far.
I like the idea of having your fig tree in the front of the plot. In the US we have chicken wire that has large round holes in it. If you could find that it might work better for keeping the bulbs safe and able to grow through the holes. I'm in "planning for next year" mode, too. It is one of my favorite parts of gardening.
Your fig tree looks fabulous now; really green and healthy compared with what it was like when you first came to the plot last year. I think it's a nice feature at the front of your plot and will do better there where it's not overwhelmed by all the stuff at the back. Glad you're keeping the comfrey. I really enjoy your vids Seren, and they're all the nicer because you're 'not' a UA-camr - you're just yourself..
You could put garlic along the edges of other beds a bit like you did your onions. Most will be out by mid June and you can transplant seedlings of warm season crops nearby that will be perfectly happy sharing space with the garlic as establish.
You have worked so very hard on your plot, Seren. Thank you for sharing it with us. I planted tulip bulbs in pots two monhs` since. They have survived the squirrels which come into my garden, so I am hoping they do well.. Are you going to have a shed at the bottom of the plot, where all your tools could be stored?
Don't be too hard on yourself about those two meters at the back - they're good habitat (I like that excuse! 😂). I am also planning on growing a ridiculous amount of garlic if only because I know I can grow garlic and it's a nice early harvest that gives you an early summer boost. You've worked so hard on the plot this year - you should be really proud of what you've achieved.
since you cant control the weeds on the other side of the fence you might want to put plastic and wood chips there so you battle the weeds overgrowing from the other side less.
Wow 100 garlic bulbs is a lot. 14:45 That Romanesco looks odd like my Calabrese was this year. I didn't get nice compact heads but rather loads of branching like that. I wonder why that happens.
I would love to see an episode with the 'before and after' . You have accomplished a huge amount in a year. It is easy to forget and get discouraged! You have done and continue to do a FABULOUS job and are an inspiration to many.
I’ve heard if you plant loads of daffodils in and around the other bulbs the likelihood of squirrels digging up the daffodils is higher and they think there all daffodils and they leave them all alone x
Romanesco is like cauliflower, you harvest them when they're still hard and tight. Yours is flowering but I think you can still eat it.. if it is not too hard and fibrous yet! I love your dalias, you made me fall in love with this plant and now I want them too in my garden❤ I bought crocus too.. I'd like to have a mini bulb garden that is in flower most of the year.. still searching for all the plants I want in it!
Your dilemma is why most of my beds are the same size, have 10, one is asparagus, the rest are rotated after each crop since the children have flown the nest, pressure is off about having to grow so much food.
Make sure your fig tree doesn’t cast shade on the greenhouse. I think that romanesco needs harvesting as it’s starting to go over. Parsnip leaves can be chopped off and will regrow. I expect you have got a crop under there.
One thing I’ve noticed throughout all these videos this year is that the plot on the left side of yours (as you face in) seems to have spent the whole year just ‘growing black weed control fabric’.
Shower screens make great windbreaks especially if the arms are intact and can be pushed into the soil . Also useful for solarising the beds before seed sowing.
Why don’t you plant garlic around the edges of beds so that you can plant other things in the middle. Could you make the shower screens into cold frames?
Sadly your Romanesco Cauli has blown 😔 It might still just be edible harvest it all and remove the plant .Ive used an old shower screen to make a great cold frame that is so useful in spring .It has. wood frame with the shower door as the glass lid .
Love your vlogs been watching since day one, but not a fan of garlic, have over wintering 40 onions bulbs in buckets outside all with shoots. I thought squirrels love tulip bulbs but not daffodil bulbs or any other flower bulbs.
The back of the plot that's not cleared yet would be ideal for your garlic but that's a future job I know. The larger plot with the flowers is about the same size or double as the one you intend on using. Sounds easier to use that. I heard you can never have too much garlic.
Keep in mind that in your climate hardneck garlic will do better, but only has a storage life of up to about six months after harvest...so you might not be able to keep it for a whole year
I know this is easy for me to say because I'm not bothered by creepy crawlies and I know phobias are no trivial thing but you must try your best to deal with the bugs Seren. It's part of being a gardener. Nothing can hurt or harm you. We are lucky compared to the bugs in some countries 😂 x
Won’t the empty pots blow away in heavy winter windstorms if they’re left outside? You can use that green plastic netting on top of the bulb bed to keep squirrels out. Remove it in the spring when the leaves pop through the soil. For the garlic, can you build a big bed at the back of the plot once you clear it out? Garlic can’t be harvested until July so it’ll be out of the way back there. Garlic really ties up useful beds in the spring when you want to plant crops so the back of the plot would free up other beds come May and June.
