Queen just basically took a 6 months break after Hot Space. Ironically Hot Space is now their 5th best selling album. Brain and Roger should also take responsibility for that album, they wrote half the material.
Exactly! IDK why some ppl STILL say it's a failure when it's one of their best selling LP's!

You would enjoy Peter “Ratty” Hince’s book. He was roadie for Freddie & John. Which in and of itself is unique. He offers a very interesting perspective. If you search it the first chapter is online.

I HATE that Freddie felt the need to explain the songs on the Hot Space LP being in the 'black' DISCO /Funk genre...he didn't feel the need to explain any other genres they'd done up 'till that point like ragtime, jazz, gospel, so why explain away the funk? 'Cos Bri along with Rog went public with THEIR displeasure 'cos Bri didn't have guitar solos on ALL songs like he'd did up 'till then & some of Deacy 'n Freddie's songs wanted that deaden drum sound that Rog hated.
I don't get why they're saying Hot Space was/is a flop when there's quite a few hits from it:
1. Under Pressure reached #1 world wide
2. Body Langue reached #3 in Canada, #10 in Sweden, 11 here in the States, #13 in Italy, #19 in both New Zealand ‘n on the US Rock Billboard, 'n #25 in the UK ‘n #30 on US R&B Billboard charts
3. Calling All Girls was a hit in the UK 'n in Japan ‘n reached #33 in Canada
4. Las Palabras de Amor (The Words of Love) went to #1 in Poland 'n #17 in the UK
5. Staying Power reached #21 in the US, Japan, ‘n Poland
6. Back Chat reached #40 in the UK
The LP only has 11 songs yet 6 out of 11 charted within the top 50! Despite poor reviews, the Hot Space LP reach #1 in Australia ‘n fell with a few top tens world wide! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_Space#Track_listing

I think Freddie dealt with the whole hot space album really well considering everyone was pointing at him basically

You buckle down find a compromise and give it your best!
The producer said recording went on forever and was very strained
I doubt very much Freddie would have said hey it would be a really good idea to do an entire album aimed at gay clubs!
He mentioned more dance oriented and that's what they assumed
They pretty much wasted a year on this
Should have taken a few months
Then made it clear in interviews and videos they weren't ok with it
(How did they expect fans to give it a fair go if at every chance they made it clear they didn't like it!?)
They seem a little over focused on gay clubs and making sure everyone knows they're not gay!
It's not as if they have to or did songs aimed at those clubs
Brian wrote an anti gun song which I'm fine with but body language despite having issues with the video was better received in the us at no 11 no 3 in canada
(Unless I'm missing something I don't understand why Brian said B L was a gay anthem!? He said he had to have words with him about his songs being too gay orientated?)
( how did Brian expect an anti gun song to go down in America? )
And David Bowie it's such a shame they didn't do more with him ( everyone seemed on board except Brian and the producer seems to have supported him)
