Really annoying in the Bohemian Rhapsody film where ONLY Freddie's solo album was mentioned as if Freddie broke up the band. Rubbish. As you are aware now Brian and Roger had already done their own solo albums!! Not shown in the film.!!!..So I hate that new fans got the wrong impression of Freddie given to them surrounding this.

But the movie did introduce younger fans to Queen & their music! Brian & Roger were the Executive Producers.

Some members of Queen have a chip on their shoulder about Freddie's solo work. While they were happily doing solo work before him. The album was not such a flop as they pretend, it was at no.5 in the UK. Freddie released a few singles from the album. Brian and Roger have basically taken over a lot of Freddie solo and they have rerecorded it, with Queen sounding instruments. They even recently released one of Freddie's solo song with Adam Lambert singing, and many fans were not happy about that. They have certainly used Freddie's solo material. Freddie's solo material have sold around 10 - 11million albums to date, that is really not bad at all for two albums. Freddie was never serious about the album, he said from the beginning he wasn't going to tour with this album, or do any live performances. He always placed his Queen duties ahead of the album. The album barely had any marketing.
I do agree that bands should just play in a country, if they have fans in a country. I am South African and Queen is still one of the most popular bands here, but 1984 was before my time. A lot of these types of sanctions don't hurt the government or any politicians, it is usually just a punishment for the normal public.
Unfortunately, I think artist are just speaking out about topics these days because they believe it is the cool thing to do, and it gives them more publicity, U2 and Bono are the perfect examples of this. It is more of a publicity seeking or marketing idea, then actually doing something productive, and they often don't understand the real issues a country might face. In that sense I really respect Freddie approach, of becoming to involved with politics. If you keep people happy and entrained you are also still providing a big service.

Would you think Freddie would mind though? I can just imagine him supporting whatever Brian and Roger did with his vocals aside from an Adam Lambert collab. I agree with your second comment, Im not one for the politics which is why said that, but understand it was a different time then.

@@FortWorthFabian totally agree but I’m afraid I can’t get into Adam Lambert . Without Freddie it’s not the same.

Honestly, even Queen's own documentary creates the wrong impression, I Want To Break Free was a bigger hit then Radio Gaga it has sold more, they had two mega massive hits from The Works, they had a mega massive hit with Under pressure from the Hot Space album, they had massive success with Another One Bites The Dust before that. They also released two other singles from The Works album, that made it into the top 20, Hammer To Fall and It's A Hard Life. The Works tour was massive it was from 1984 - 1985. They played for the biggest paying audience of all time at the Rock In Rio festival were they were the main headliners of the whole festival, there was around 400k people, in January 1985. The tour ended just 5 weeks before Live Aid. They were all on vacation after a grueling long tour. I seriously don't know why they try to create this whole strange mystique around Live Aid. The Works are their 4th best selling album. They were not really popular with teenagers perhaps, or cool at this point, but they were doing extremely well.

I was a teen in the 80’s, watched the first video on MTV in 1981, was into punk and alternative music (I mean really punk) but now I’m 51, I have my favorite bands that I’ve been listening to for 35 years, they’re still going strong. But I find now that I’m older, I appreciate classic rock more (70’s) . But I digress, MTV did play a lot of white mainstream music. It took years for that to change.

Brian is right about the political/Sun City thing. Obviously apartheid was bad, but musicians didn’t get a ton of flack (at least from other musicians when they played in dictatorships or communist countries. They generally weren’t accused of supporting those regimes.

Hi. You're my evening tonight watching these. Politics in music? The Woodstock era (and beyond) was all about politics. In fact during a trip to the Rock N Roll hall of fame they had a special exhibit with the topic of Politics and music. John Lennon was political also. It's like 3 am so I can't think of anymore right now but trust me....from this old broad born in 1960 it's been all over.

Fred Mandel - "I'm Canadian so I get it." Yup. Me too. We love our British humour here. Just ask Mike Myers. Lol. Queen didn't need the U.S. by that time because Europe and South America became their biggest audiences. Queen was played on the radio a lot more in Europe in the mid-late 80s than in the U.S. I Want To Break Free and Body Language were not banned on Canadian music tv called Much Music so I remember seeing these and laughing my head off at the guys dressed in drag. The Radio Gaga video was really popular too.

Is it me or does Brian look too smug about Freddie solo
It's odd they're making a point that it made 159 in the us oddly Brian's was the same!and Both uk 6
Brian debut his single at Freddie tribute 92 and released his album a few months after
(Brian too much love was on the tribute album I think a lot of people thought the single was also to raise money for the charity,it wasn't it was to promote his album)
After all this time I think he still resents him being given more money for his solo!

    Freddie solo
    Yes he said do anything..
But I wish theyd left his solo work alone putting Queen music on it just doesn't feel right
Especially when they clearly had an issue with it and portrayed it in such a negative way in the film...even in this doc but are quite happy to use it and make money off it..
Mr Bad Guy album no 6 in the uk,would have been nice to have included that
I'm concerned if they are doing things fairly and if there is fair share of royalties going to Freddie estate..
I also hope someone is advising mary properly, what happens to those royalties after she dies..
Solo, two singles were used on film/ series soundtrack
Living on my own got to no 1 in 93 remixed by no more brothers
I think the main song is much the same but they cut down the video and obscured it slightly which I think is fine but I wish theyd kept the scatting in
I think Freddie video was banned at the time
Born to love you uk no 11 when Freddie released it
Some people have an issue with it but I like how they have used love me like theres no tomorrow (I hope Queen stay away from that song)to bring awareness about Aids and how difficult it was and how isolated they were but it's done beautifully,I cant see how Freddie would have an issue with it,it was shown on times square to bring attention to Aids and the trust (wish they had chose a better picture of Freddie it looks odd )(I also hope the money is used in a good way)

    Ok what?
Under pressure was no 1 in 81 following 1980 the game album which was their only no 1 album in the us which also had their two us no 1 singles on it
I wish now they had under pressure released in 82 then two years doesn't sound as bad as 3!(wasnt 4!)on their previous album rather than it feeling like they had done things but failed
    They were inactive?
Works tour August 84 to May 85!
    July 85 live aid!
    One hit?
    The works 84 released 4 singles(uk)
    Ga Ga no 2
    Break free no 3
    Hard life no 6
    Hammer to fall no 13
    Album no 2 uk
So I'm not sure how anyone has decided they might be over because of a lack of success
    Jan 85 rio!?
What could have been an issue with the audience was sun city
Did Freddie want to do it
I think there was an issue with not being included on the band aid single?
I would be a little inactive if I'd just done a world tour!
