Electric candlestick from 1905

  • This electric Art Nouveau candlestick went to a grandmother in the attic, who received it as a wedding gift in 1905.
    Characteristics
Art Nouveau is based on the floral concepts of the British textile designer William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement, which returned to folk traditions and romanticism to the craftsmanship of medieval masters and thus opposed the simplicity of processing industrial products driven by the Industrial Revolution. This style was also strongly influenced by English painters known as the Pre-Raphaelites.
The greatest secession of Art Nouveau reached between 1890 and 1910 in Europe and the United States. In France it is called Art nouveau, in Germany Jugendstil, the Czech name "secession" (German Sezession, from the Latin secessio branching) comes from art associations, which in Berlin (1891), Munich (1892) and especially in Vienna (Wiener Sezession, 1896) separated from conservative academies.
The main features of the Art Nouveau style are considered to be ornamentality, flatness and a fondness for unusual colors and aesthetic use of various materials. The supple Art Nouveau ornament expresses a special quality of Art Nouveau feeling, which avoids emotional fluctuations and strong will and tends to a balanced mood. The Art Nouveau line is a smooth undulating curve, which evokes in the viewer the impression of non-violent movement in an area, the monotony of which is balanced by color. Art Nouveau looks for unusual shades of color and binds them according to the principle of harmony and contrast. The central feature is stylization, Art Nouveau tries to overcome the pregnant themes of historical styles and turns directly to natural shapes (leaves, flowers, human and animal body). Beautiful job. It looks like you have a matched set. This was a more complicated restoration than it appeared. Replacing the wiring and connecting it correctly took a lot of work. Now the candlesticks are not only beautiful, they are safe to use for many years to come. The brass polished beautifully. Thank you and smiles from the USA.

An excellent restoration with some creative finishing touches. As a restorer and electrical engineer, I will offer you a pro tip. When using screw terminal connectors, never solder/tin the wires that go into screw or clamp electrical connectors. The solder is very soft and relaxes, cracks or breaks under mechanical tension causing the joint to become loose and causes arcing problems. Use crimp brass ferrules on the main conductor ends and a ring crimp connector and star washer on the earth/ground connection.

So, in order to understand how you do your work, I researched your electrical systems, outlets, and products. I'm a retired electrician who was licensed in Texas. A old trick to get wires out if they are stuck in a small pipe: put some dishwasher soap on them on 1 side and let it run a bit down in the pipe. The soap itself washes out easy and does not harm anything

My guess is that these were originally intended for candles, but "electrified" in the early 1970s. At that point, the bases were replaced with hollow sheet metal ones. The originals would have been more solid, for stability. Around 1990 someone replaced the line cord with a substandard twin-core one, losing the earth connection, which is ESSENTIAL in a metal lamp. The 1970s cotton-covered wiring was correct. It would protect the connections inside the arms should they get hot. Those vinyl replacements would melt and cause a short.

Beautifully and safely done. Fascinating to see the materials of the time, 100+ years ago, and the current ones that replace them. That lamp will have another century of new (nouveau) life. And that old brass buffed up like it was just waiting for it.

Very nice! Except... you don’t seem to have any strain relief on the mains cord, a simple knot would do. And the protective earth wire should be the longest so it will be the last one to detach if the cord is pulled. Now it’s the first to go as it’s so short compared to the live and neutral wires.

Hello. Once again you have done a miracle. Your candlestick is simply a dream. It takes your breath away so much that it is beautiful. In addition you have two. I would love to have it in my house. It is really nice. Among the items you refurbished there are a few items that I just love. The first is the small travel stove with two burners, then it is the small box for the wood that you have placed next to your heater and the third is this magnificent candlestick. Of course, there are plenty of others that I find magnificent. But these three touched my heart, especially the candlestick. Thanks for your great video. Gabriel (France).

just a curious question but why does one lamp have all brass accents but one has white plastic on the main support shaft?

Each lamp is slightly different. It is not plastic, but painted cast iron.

I've been awaiting: to see this one for quite a while. It has a strong reference to the electric Christmas candle, which I still have. I wanted it to go well along with the Christmas wreath. I'm someone who's supposed to promise that I would treat Christmas a lot like as if it were my favorite holiday. I've already learned that you're supposed to honor and respect Christmas. But the electric Christmas candle I have operated on a flicker bulb. 💡☃️⛄️❄️⭐️🎄🎍🏅🥇🥈🥉🎖🏆🎅 🤶 🧑‍🎄😇 🙏 🕯

Wow! What a difference Veradona. They look way better now. I'd probably would've gone with a dimmer bulb for the light sources... or maybe those bulbs that flicker like real candles.

That’s a rather interesting historical piece of lighting. And I like how you combined the antique components with the PVC piping and the LED filament lamps!

    Are you sure it's from 1905? I think from the 1970s :)

I agree. If it was from 1905 it would have been built better and probably not electric.

I believe it is the year 1905 to 1920. The power cord, one bakelite bulb socket and switch were not original.

    • @christinaelge6683
      @christinaelge6683 3 роки тому

Most people didn't have electricity in 1905. The cord had been replaced at one point. The original braided wiring in the base leans more towards, at oldest, the mid 40's.

Whereas it's definitely not from 1905, it's definitely not from the 1970s either... My guess, mid 1940s.... Maybe late 30s...
