Thanks for the walkthrough. I'm thinking about getting an old server for a Nextcloud setup and some other stuff. Look forward to seeing your other videos.
USB disks are emulated as "hard drives" by default on most Dell systems afaik, older systems tend to need this option set in BIOS to boot from USB media.
I'm currently running my proxmox on a old i7 3th gen laptop with 16GB of RAM, and 2x 2TB HDD and 1 SSD. Would love to get a real server but the power costs here would be huge (I'm from The Netherlands)
TBH I don't think most of us homelab users need a commercial server, but it's cool to say we have one. Laptops are great for a home server low power use, built in battery back-up, they don't take up that much space, and they don't put off a bunch of heat and noise. Plus if you get a couple old ones you can have an awesome cluster. Netherlands aye, I visited Amsterdam once in my early 30's and from what I remember it was a super fun and beautiful place.
@@LoResDIY have to agree on that only downside is CPU and Ram limitations, often it's limited to 32. My laptop is limited to 16 GB and cannot get upgraded. Well can always build a better system in the future. Yeah Amsterdam is a fine place to go, very fun. Thanks for the videos for so far, I'm enjoying them.
Question: Do you need to run a cat cable in both the single nic and one in the 4 port section to give both the system and the Bios network connectivity? Just got mine in the mail off of ebay for 150 usd. No drives came with it. 32 gb of ram though.
Yes if you want to use the IDRAC you need a cable connected to it, and at least one to the 4 port nic to give your OS access to the network and internet.
Dude, what type hard drives? What type USB ports? What type Network ports? What type of memory? You failed miserably before you got to the two minute mark. Consider redoing this video.
I don't know about failed before the two minute mark. Heck I thought it it was ok for a first video (besides looking like I got beat up the night before 😂), but I get what you're saying about calling specific details of the hardware. I will keep this in mind and thanks for the feed back.
I have same unit. running Proxmox base. Several other OS and Win10. all simultaneously, works great!
Good to hear.

Thanks Appreciate it. Hopefully I will be doing some videos about updating the R610 soon; more ram, more hard drives, and a video card.

Ah thanks for the info.
Can you create a video about how to replace the video card on Dell R610 and setup without using iDRAC..?
Sure but not sure when I will be able to get around to it.
I have never EVER been able to launch the Virtual console on my R-610. With the iDRAC Enterprise addition. And not from lack of trying.
I was using an add on for chrome called IE tab, but sadly that doesn't work anymore; so I'm trying to work it out again.

can i plug only 1 power supply or need 2 for running well?
One will work fine.
For 150€/$ maybe you can actually take an r620 wich have v1-2 procs but its still a good machine

can r610 run well at win 10?
It should be able to run Win10 without a problem.
