The problem with Melle Mel is he’s too good. He’s an artist who spoke about the world not just his own life. He’s not about ego and glorifying the bad in life. He had something to say and said it in a way even kids like me in Wales could understand. He helped me respect hip hop and realise that art is important. Today there’s not anyone like him, what he aimed to do. Not at the level he was at anyhow. A hero.

    Beat Street Breakdown, Rrrrhaa!
Beat Street, the king of the beat
You see him rockin' that beat from across the street
And huh-huh, Beat Street is a lesson, too
Because ah, you can't let the streets beat you Uh!
Well, a picture can express a thousand words
To describe all the beauty of life you give
And if the world was yours to do over
I know you'd paint a better place to live
    Where the colors would swirl
And the boys and girls can grow in peace and harmony
And where murals stand on walls so grand
As far as the eyes are able to see, ha
I never knew art till I saw your face
And there'll never be one to take your place
'Cause each and every time you touch a spraypaint can
    Michaelangelo's soul controls your hands
Then serenades of blue and red
And the beauty of the rainbow fills your head
    Crescendo colors playin' tunes
Man why oh why you'd have to die so soon?
    Say 1, 2, 3, 4
just let me know what you came here for
And just clap your hands everybody
and let me know that I'm not alone
And if you knew my man when he was alive
    scream it out and say
    Ramo (Ramo), Ramo (Ramo)
I'm talking about, Ashes to ashes and dust to dust
Where the good die young is all thy must
Cause as life must live death must die
And the tears shall fall from the living eye
Tell me who's gonna dream the impossible dream
Of the beautiful cities and the island's dreams?
When your works of art brought into being
All that the ghetto stopped you from seeing
    Still life urban masterpiece
Your trademark was written on trains and walls
A million dollar gift only God released
Huh, and yet you got killed for nothin' at all
So after this there'll be no more hard time
No more bad times and no more pain
No more chump change, none of that bull
Just movies, museums and the hall of fame
So all you hip-hops, get on up
And let's take it to the top where we belong
'Cause the age of the Beat Street wave is here
Everybody let's sing along, come on
    Say hooo (Hooo)
    Say hooo (Hooo)
And to let me know I'm rockin the microphone
    Everybody say Ramo (Ramo)
    Ramo (Ramo)
    Rrrrhaa!
A newspaper burns in the sand
And the headlines say 'Man Destroys Man'
Extra extra, read all the bad news
On the war for peace that everybody would lose
The rise and fall, the last great empire
The sound of the whole world caught on fire
The ruthless struggle, the desperate gamble
The game that left the whole world in shambles
The cheats, the lies, the alibies
And the foolish attempts to conquer the sky
Lost in space, and what is it worth?
Huh, the President just forgot about Earth
Spendin' multi-billions and maybe even trillions
The cost of weapons ran in the zillions
There's gold in the street and there's diamond under feet
And the children in Africa don't even eat
Flies on their faces, they're livin' like mice
And their houses even make the ghetto look nice
Huh, the water tastes funny, it's forever too sunny
And they work all month and don't make no money
A fight for power, a nuclear shower
A people shout out in the darkest hour
    Sights unseen and voices unheard
And finally the bomb gets the last word
Christians killed Muslims and Germans killed Jews
And everybody's bodies are used and abused,
Huh, minds are poisoned and souls are polluted
    Superiority complex is deep rooted
Leeches and lices, and people got prices
    Egomaniacs control the self-righteous
Nothin' is sacred and nothin' is pure
So the revelation of death is our cure
Dachau, Auschwitz, Hiroshima, Vietnam, Leningrad, Iwo Jima,
    Okinawa, Korea, The philippines
Devastation, Death camps and killing machines
Peoples in terror, the leaders made a error
And now they can't even look in the mirror
'Cause we gotta suffer while things get rougher
And that's the reason why we got to get tougher
So learn from the past it worked for the future
And don't be a slave to no computer
Cause the children of Man inherits the land
And the future of the world is in your hands
So just throw your hands in the air
And wave em like you just don't care
And if you believe that you're the future
Scream it out and say oh yeah (Oh yeah)
    Oh yeah (Oh yeah)
    Rrrrhaa!
    Everybody, Do you believe!

Though I like Devastation, Death, camps, and killing machines BETTER

KRS One is often referred to as The Teacher, and it's true. But Melle Mel? Shit. I was just some little white nerdy kid in Kansas City having my mind blown wide open long by Melle Mel, Duke Bootee, and Flash, long before Chuck D and PE came around. This track needs to be in the National Registry. It's in my opinion the single greatest rhyme in rap history, nothing comes close to this.story, nothing comes close to this.
It hits hard, makes you cry and feel some shit, and want to party and look to the future.
      Fucking brilliant song.
      For the ages.
      Melle Mel is the GOAT.

The best was when it combined funk and R&B, before this. After that, it got very 80s. There were some great 80s rap songs, but it wasn’t the same. And as much as I enjoy some g-funk, funky, old school rap from 1979-82 will always be the best.

I remember when my older brother and I saw this at the theatres 40 years ago this past July 4th and we and the entire audience were clapping our hands in unison to this scene which I truly believe the entire globe was doing the exact same thing. Gives me goosebumps thinking about that great time when you could cheer the heroes and boo the villains at the movies. Too bad these days you'd be arrested for noise conduct. 1984 a terrific time of being young.

And now look what hes done to himself. Talked beautiful lyrics, truth, and now the years have taken a toll on him. He's exactly the opposite now of what he spit before. It's a shame. Even if he doesn't like the way hip hop is now, he was the gateway drug for it to evolve, and instead of holding that title with pride instead he belittles and contradicts all he has put on pen to paper. He's made himself a joke. When he should be a legend. Resent and envy will do this to any man. But for Melle it's even worse because he is tearing his own legacy down for what?

It’s gonna be a celebration then let’s do it right Beat street for graffiti artist he lived the life of style breakdown had the keys to the subway system Started in New York city let me tell you this production movie went worldwide and change the hip-hop scene forever I’m coming from The subway yards Were sleeping giant get painted still to this day or next The never ending in the historical History.
It’s not too late they you Directors and producers can always make part 2 Beat Street it would be a absolute sell-out extra special worldwide box office ticket with The old school culture coming alive live once more you flying out of the window lives in freezer ice cold
Winter underground subculture hip-hop don’t stop do you believe I most certainly do Forever There’s no stopping the underground It lives and bringing 360 around the world for any race or Legion it doesn’t discriminate anyone but the most important part about it’s A coldhearted killer is killed more Graffiti Bombers in Sydney Then anywhere else in the world to date

In Beat Street movie version after he says, "Nothing is sacred and nothing is pure, so the revelation of death is thy cure", he then says this line that is missing out of all recorded versions I can find, "Dacau, Auschwitz, Hiroshima, Viet-Nam, Leningrad, Iwo-Jima, Okinawa, Korea the Philippines, devastating death from the killing machines!" If anyone knows of a 12-inch record or tape or something that may contain this version, please let me know. All help will be appreciated.

Ummm, the content was real. But as for him being a lyricist, maybe it’s just unfair to compare him to guys like Eminem or other more contemporaries. Hip hop has evolved so far that this makes MGK look like a genius. It was cool in 1984. But that was 39 years ago.

¿Crees que un Letrista se identifica con la complejidad de sus rimas? estás equivocado, lo que importa es el mensaje que está transmitiendo a través del versos, más que rellenar una estrofa con maldiciones

Funny thing about the video: first, those streets don't look like that now - but now locals are complaining about "gentrification". Second, with due respect, if my neighborhood looked like that, rather than bitch about it I'd do something. You don't need to clear a lot(though you might); but you can get the garbage off the street. Of course, it's easier to complain that somebody else isn't doing it, right?

Easier said than done. If you live in an environment where people are more trying to survive their day to day how is it possible to even put your mind on cleaning your streets? 80s New York was a tough time. About gentrification yeah there are positive and negative points about it but long term maybe better for everyone.
