Tram 1411 Scanner Antenna Part 2. How has this Ham/Scanner/CB base antenna held up?

  • It's been close to 2 years since I bought this all in one type antenna for in the house. I've got to say it's a really great scanner antenna, a decent 2/440 Ham antenna and a fair CB antenna.
    The unit has held up well to high winds, snow, and heavy rain as well as the occasional bird landing on it for a rest. These are thankfully still available and for the price, I'd say they are worth the money I spent by far!

    This antenna has been full of surprises. Last feb during the beginning of the Texas Snowpocalypse, I hurridly threw mine up onto a 10' section of pvc pipe with big zipties to the corner post of my deck. Using an sdr, I was monitoring Skywarn/ARES nets 40 mi away on 2m repeaters. Since then, I have gotten my General ham ticket, and have raised the antenna 5 more feet (10' top rail topped with 5' pvc). I've worked dx stations on 10 meters from Cape Verde Is. to the east as well as France, England, Ireland, many S.American countries, Carribean, 20+ states including HI, and 3 7400 mi qso's in NZ. This was incredible to me as I was doing it on a $60 antenna & a $200 Anytone AT5555N 10m radio putting out a mere 40 watts!. My NanoVNA shows this antenna to be resonant on a surprising number of bands. Heck... Its even good on 6m. Now Im running 100w thru it on 10m with a Yaesu ft-991a and 50w on 2m/440. This thing outperforms my homemade 10m ground wave vertical and homemade 10m horizontal wire dipole. It has survived nearly a year of Texas weather extremes. Seriously considering buying a spare to keep unassembled in my go-kit.

    So many channels promise follow-ups, but when you do you always deliver. One of the reasons I subscribe to your channel. Many thanks.

    I too have one of these and after a few years it just wasn't up to snuff. I disassembled it and found quit a bit of internal corrosion and lots of water running out of the insides. It was wet. I think the culprit is where the vertical element meets the coil housing. The hole is drilled through the form and is a possible path for water ingress. After cleaning mine up I used silicone RTV on all of the seams between the housing parts and I ran a bead around the vertical whip/coil housing joint. Otherwise a nice antenna. Hope this helps anyone with a similar issue.

    I just bit the Bullet and ordered a Maco 58 last night for the house. My homemade antenna made from a mobile has been due to be retired

    I got this when I got my Technician back in 2019 (General for a few years now) and have it mounted on the roof with two sections of mast going up. I used it for working 2 meters, 70CM, and GMRS (also licensed there) running a handheld as a base until I got better radios. I've also used it on 10 meters and it's still within usable SWR for 11 meters. I spend some nights dialing around the bands and SWLing with my ICOM 706MKII and it gets pretty good reception. I've even used adapters and plugged it into a County Comm GP5. It's held up well here on the border in SW Texas. Definitely has been worth the money. Now if I can get moving and string up some other antennas to divide the work and to get me talking on the lower HF bands.

    One of my friends has that same antenna , he uses a tuner on a few of the ham bands, some is ok without a tuner , etc but he’s had his up for 15 years and said for the money it’s a bargain

    I just talked skip a few days ago on mine on The CB Superbowl Ch 6 27.025 with a Cobra 148 gtl and a RM Italy KL 300.. My Tram 1411 is mounted sitting on just a 10 foot 1 inch black gas pipe from home depot ran the coax thru the bottom of the pipe to a pole ground mount I was deadkeying 40 watts swinging 150ish talking all up and down the East Coast.... That's 420 In Denver with that wave

    I also have this same exact antenna. It has big ears on 2M/70cm, and lets me hit all the local ham repeaters. It works just ok on local CB, can't really skip with it. It kind of sucks for 10M. Overall, it's a great receiver, but a so-so to crappy transmitter due to the zero-gain design.

    I have a question mate, that kind of scanner can receive the signal of the 22 channels walkies talkies? Thank you!

      I think any analog scanner can be programmed to get FRS and GMRS channels with no issues.

    Hi Eric, I just recently picked up my new Tram 1091 BNC scanner antenna and unfortunately it’s performed worse than the cheaper 10 dollar Bingfu antenna off Amazon I had outdoors in its place. Maybe I need to ground it with a grounding rod? If you know I’d love to hear back! Thanks!

    • @FarpointFarms
      @FarpointFarms  2 роки тому

      That is odd. I can tell you that this one is grounded for sure.

      @benmeyer2916 2 роки тому

      @@FarpointFarms Alright thank you, I think I’ll try the grounding method and see if my reception improves, I really hope it’s not something wrong with the antenna itself. The antenna is paired with my RadioShack Pro 197

    Hi! Great content on your channel! One question, what pipe did you use to place the antenna, I have the same antenna and it didn't come with any pipe and I don't know what to use! Excuse my English, I'm using the google translator.
    Thank you very much!

    Oh man I just left you a message on your newest video. I was saying how I got the tram 1499 213 50' coax cable. I basically got it because I did not want to have to go and ground it outside cuz I'm on the second floor. Do you have a any other suggestions I bought uniden 930 bearcat SSB basically for skip. Now according to this video you're saying these antennas are any good for skip ? What antenna would you suggest I get? Like I said my situation is I am on the second floor I have a third floor addict I was planning on putting the antenna. I already bought 50 ft of the 213 cable so what antenna should I get pair up with my uniden bearcat SSB 930 thank you You are obviously an expert and I am definitely not I am a newbie lol and if I'm going to switch out my antennas I should do it now while I still can return. Thank you very much please help me I appreciate it great videos thanks again
