I have a small inexpensive shortwave radio from Amazon, to boost reception I hung a 20ft copper wire from my ceiling and just clipped it to my small antenna on my radio, that helped A LOT with reception along with headphones. Turned my $25 shortwave into a much more capable machine.

Great video very informative for those of us that know very little about Ham radios. Thank you sir for taking time out of your life to make these videos.
Hey I really appreciate the information just got me an ATS-20 and a mla-30+ but I also have been listening on my laptop to a few websites that ham operators put up but I have never heard of those sites I will check them out tonight thank you again
I have an XHDATA D-808 radio. They are available for less than 100 bucks and offers shortwave, AM/FM, and SSB. I have been very pleased with it especially for the price. I have an Antron 99 antenna I use for my other radios that I just connect a jumper to the XHDATA and it works good.
As always thanks for the video. Also I have a couple shortwave radio receivers. I haven't used them in a couple months . It's time to take one out and listen to a shortwave broadcast.

Thanks for sharing. Without a long wire antenna I am very limited to the stations I can pick up on my shortwave radios (I have a few since I am into restoring old radios). One recent radio with Shortwave bands I restored has a Beat Frequency Oscillator (BFO) so I can listen to SSB, and CW. For those who like to tinker with electronics there are some good sources on the web fro building your own and adding it to a shortwave radio that only process AM. My next step will be building a better antenna. Thanks again for sharing the link. I've also run across a really nice SDR that can be accessed for listening through a website in Europe (I'm in the US). I also have my own SDR that I use through my laptop that also allows to me listen to satellite transmissions. SDR console is a great freeware software package for handling the listening to sats as well as normal SW communications. I've made my own little dipole antennas clipped to proper wavelengths for doing that.
Thank you for this series on short wave radio. I have been inactive as a Ham for about four years but since watching your videos I have dug my kit out, and today set it up and shorted my antenna out. Also ordered a cheap (TECSUN R-9012 I love simple) SW radio as going on vacation soon so I thought it would be nice to take it along. Brilliant channel.
Having been a SWL for many years my "go to" source of SW frequencies and stations has always been WRTV and Klingenfuss shortwave frequency publications, must haves for any serious DXing. I find online frequency sites hard to navigate and more often than not out of date information. For the casual listener I'm sure they provide enough information for the occasional times one may want to monitor a few broadcasts now and again. One thing any SWL needs to be aware of finding the correct time in UTC while searching for stations, your local time does not apply here. All shortwave broadcast schedules are published in UTC. Besides shortwave commercial broadcasts there's the world of shortwave utility stations like aviation, marine, military, hams, weather, spy stations, encrypted and digital communications. I'm not familiar enough with SDR shortwave radio to make any comments about it, I'm an old school SWL, hook up the radio with a piece of wire and turn it on is what I do. Love your videos by the way, you may get me back into working SSB CB radio again too!
For tech minded people a SDR USB stick for the computer can be an low cost way to go. Software is free and many vids on how to setup. Looking forward to the antenna video as I sent for the RTL-SDR and LNA to try out.
Thanks, have a C Crane SSB2 radio and Wifi 3 radio. Was not aware of those sites, although I have heard Hal Turner Radio Show via Shoutcast. Have the C Crane wire antenna that clips on the telescoping radio but haven't used it yet.

Thank You Eric! This one post has made me happy in bringing back my interest of my very old hobby of SW radio. This has help tremendously and appreciate your channel in helping in these hard crafts. 😁
I used to dx the radio station late at night when I lived up north on my 706 i com when I live up north. at that time I just had a novice ticket. so went ahead and got the next one up and two meters was on the agenda.
Just got based on your reviews a ATS-25 and a MLA 30+ antenna so this video is perfect timing for me. Fun little radio! Great video full of very helpful info . Thank you.
i watched your video on your grundig radio. i just got mine the other day and I love it. got to get the antenna in the house. I have a forty meter antenna that i ran north and south. but I had to run a hundred feet of coax to get to my radio room. I payed a lot more than you did. but I already know that the am is spectacular. any how the coax was cheap cb coax and the loss was to great on it for my 7300 hundred or my five ninety. so that antenna is going to come into my bed room. I'm going to coil the coax for a choke if i had fer rite magnets i would put several of them on there.
I had that shortwave info website saved in my phone and I didn’t even know it 👍. Great info Erik . I don’t listen as much as I want but I enjoy scrolling through the Ten-Turn dial on my FT-950 , hook it up to my beams and listen 🎧 , it’s incredible.
Hi Eric, Here in Great Britain I used to listen to pirate short wave transmissions on Sundays but they were getting few and far between as the operators got older and presumably either gave up or died. Having watched your video my interest is re-invigorated so I shall have to dig out some of my radios and tune in. I also have some SW transmitters myself still. What's the best frequencies to get across the pond to The States from GB?
Crazy question Eric, would an Ethernet (CAT 5e in my case) work for a wire antenna, I have a box of i belive 500 or 1,000 foot that I have sitting around the house, assuming I would use on single strand in the jacket or just remove the single wire out of the jacket. Would that work for a wire antenna and use aligator clips to clip to the antenna of my Kaito KA600 Voyager Pro? Edit: would it affect the reception if i attached it to metal T-posts or should I use the yellow electric fence insulators Thanks, 73 KG5VDD
Eric, I found one channel that plays old TV serials and narrates verbally what is going on what you can't see. One of them was the original Star Trek series.
Hey Eric, those little cheap "needle dial" shortwave receivers do work fairly well, y'know those that have 7 or 9 bands, run off AA batteries, inexpensive to buy, but that said, the occasional bargain of higher quality stuff does pop up on ebay, it's amazing what you can find just by changing the search command.... "communications receiver" will throw up yaesu and icom radios etc "ham radio" throws back all kinds of stuff, a lot of the time being listed by people who don't know what they've got!!
I'm seeing lots of suggestions in the comments on this video and I think I'd like some more ideas on how to better "upgrade" my lower power/budget shortwave radios. I currently piddle around on a Retekess TR618 and I own an older Realistic SW-100 from my dad. I'd like to make listening easier on these two in particular
I wish I still had my HQ-180, started in radio with that, use to listen to Radio Moscow or BBC World service late at night and fell asleep with that orange glow.
I use shortwave-info almost exclusively. when you are DXing foreign language stations, you can find out who it is. Find the distance between you and stations. Once you know who's broadcasting you can look on internet to see if they have English service.
Interesting Info! ....So to use the Shoutcast (Receive only,) You have to download the software?... Even if you are not going to be making a station of your own? And this software is free?
No, you don't need to download anything at all if you just want to listen. On a PC or mac, just go to " directory.shoutcast.com/" and you will see a searchable massive listing of stations. Now on a phone, you will need to download an app, but they are free and there are a few to choose from. Have fun!
@@FarpointFarms THX For your direction, appreciated! All new to me but when I try to play stations I get Shoutcast error mesg says: "Media URL could not be loaded." "Check media URL is valid" ... I tried two diff browsers, chrome & Edge...?
@@oldkingcole6147 I understand the issue. Older stations, and small ones' like my own don't have modern security certificates. In chrome, look at the URL at the top of the browser. Next to it on the right there is a little lock symbol. When you click on a station, it will change to a triangle and say "site not secure" It's 100% Ok to use the site. This tech is so old many browser just stopped supporting it by default. Click on the triangle, then look at the mini menu for an item called " Site settings" that brings up a bunch of options on a larger menu. Scroll down until you see the triangle and the words "Insecure content" Change that box to "Allow" and the site will work like it did before the update Google and Edge make in mid 2021. I know this sounds scary, but You have my work that the site, and all the tiny stations on it are 100% safe. The stations use a very old way of transmitting data over the internet and these modern browsers just don't know what to make of it. Once you have changed that setting, Chrome will remember it and it will then always work on that site. Please also note that this doesn't effect your security settings on any other site.

I listened to SW as a kid. I'm 67now.I'm trying to find a radio to start listening again. To many to choose. What would you recommend for under $200. Love your video's.
can i use the MLA -30 antenna with my Kaito Voyage Short wave radio ! thanks joe i learn a lot from your videos, i wish i had someone in my area that was into this stuff!
Good Morning Eric. You may want to add that the two best times to listen to SW are Sunrise and Sunset. Also the best time to listen to frequencies below 11,000 kHz is at night. Take care.
Thanks, I think All of us viewers would learn quite a bit from you on this subject. BTW, thanks to your videos, Ive gotten the radio bug. Can't wait to see the 2nd part of this video. If you haven't already can you give tips and tricks on cb radio ssb what are the best time to listen and talk ? I just got a turned cb uniden 980ssb and a amtron 99 I just feel like I'm not doing something right I talk locally with people on ssb but I hear some other states but I can talk to them I don't know if I need a amplifier and we're to buy one I Know there some ebay I just don't know who to trust online shopping.
I have a challenge for ya, which might be right up ur alley. This involves u making a video on what people need to do b4 shit hits the fan and the internet does not function anymore, and guess what them web sites u mentioned do not exist no more and many people will be lost, one scenario is to just scan the bands but people should have an incase of Emergency Guide where u show them what they can do, I gotta few suggestions, print out the current list of broadcasters on them sites and make it waterproof, have a shortwave radio stored in a faraday cage, how to string a dipole quickly or make a dipole antenna, I am sure u get the drift and I dont see anyone discussing this type of topic, cos we all know every gov will make sure ur left in the dark when they do the final killshot.
Just got back into short wave radio after 60 years and looking for information. Glad I found your channel. Hoping to get my Trans-Oceanic up and running again. Need someone in the area to help me with the tuning pointer since it doesn't align with the band number on the faceplate.
I recently bought one of those Malachite knock-off radios called Malahit. It has USB and LSB. It came with a small telescoping antenna. I replaced that with a cable antenna and BNC to SMA adapter. I’m now just getting started learning my way around the radio. Thanks for these videos! 👍
What’s. your opinion on webSDR? Gives you the ability to tune around, not just locked in to what is on shoutcast and don’t have to wait for propagation as you can just use a local SDR to the station you’re trying to listen to.

A good antenna is sometimes more important than the quality of the receiver
A long wire embedded in the grass works very well, too. A SW antenna doesn't have to be up in the air for receive.

@@FarpointFarms Awesome! U da man! I figured likely something simple. I Believe you touched on this in the video. Appreciated, I expect I will spend much time browsing here! 👍👍
I’m wondering if you can help me with starting up a shout cast station? If you have the time. Thanks interesting topics on your channel
I had never heard of Shoutcast , good to know it doesn’t involve standing on your front porch and yelling “hey neighbor ! “. :). Great info though , learned something new
It's a wild west kind of place. There are a lot of odd stations, but some real gems in there too!
@@FarpointFarms Like the Superbowl.
Helloooo I found a shortwave radio 📻 with the frequencies 5.85 - 18.0 mhz. Good or not?
I listened to SW as a kid. I'm 67now.I'm trying to find a radio to start listening again. To many to choose. What would you recommend for under $200. Love your video's.
Great starter is a Tecsun PL 330.
can i use the MLA -30 antenna with my Kaito Voyage Short wave radio ! thanks joe
i learn a lot from your videos, i wish i had someone in my area that was into this stuff!
Yes you can! You may need to add an alligator clip to hook it to the antenna, but it will work fine.
Good Morning Eric. You may want to add that the two best times to listen to SW are Sunrise and Sunset. Also the best time to listen to frequencies below 11,000 kHz is at night. Take care.
good point, thank you
@@FarpointFarms Amen Eric
In an episode, you mentioned you have your radios in a Faraday cage, could you do a video on this subject? Thanks
I'll see if I can make a dedicated video on that side of things here.
Thanks, I think All of us viewers would learn quite a bit from you on this subject. BTW, thanks to your videos, Ive gotten the radio bug. I have added to my "collection" of radios a 1940 Hallicrafters SX-28 & and 1950's Hallicrafters SX-100, Cobra 29XLR CB & a Yaesu FT-991A. Stay alert & safe. 73's@@FarpointFarms
Like minded viewer foot stomping how therapeutic it is to hear voices of sanity. Like others I suspect, the noise generators are driving me to SW and HAM. Keep The Faith.
Thank You!
I put me up a MLA 30 loop.. works great.
That one is a great antenna!
+1 very good antenna especially for the price
An IMAX 2000 works great. Just unscrew the pl259 so that just center pin is connected...not the outer jacket.
Cool!
Can't wait to see the 2nd part of this video. If you haven't already can you give tips and tricks on cb radio ssb what are the best time to listen and talk ? My comments keep disappearing.. My intent was to be helpful, and I thought I was. Will you help me understand why they were removed?
When I'm not running my flap on HF, I enjoy listening to SW. Radio Romania comes in quite well.
I will have to check that one out.
I also enjoy Radio Romania International as well. Try Radio New Zealand at 15720 in the evening and night.
I am looking for a mid to upper price SW Radio any suggestions?
Eton 750, or a used Radio Shack DX394.
Would you be able to make a video on fining a CB repair shop here in North Carolina?
Thank you.
I recently bought one of those Malachite knock-off radios called Malahit. It has USB and LSB. It came with a small telescoping antenna. I replaced that with a cable antenna and BNC to SMA adapter. I’m now just getting started learning my way around the radio. Thanks for these videos! 👍
are you still doing midnight cafe
What’s. your opinion on webSDR? Gives you the ability to tune around, not just locked in to what is on shoutcast and don’t have to wait for propagation as you can just use a local SDR to the station you’re trying to listen to.
