I got this exact chainsaw and a bunch of files, greases and wrenches for $30 in an auction. I find these chainsaws have a lot of complaints on hard starts and bad running. After I got myself comfortable with the parts (courtesy of your videos) these chainsaws are fine once you tune them really well. Thanks for the handy videos!
the carb is an after market carb. the original Polun carb has a different linkage that does not interfere with the housing. I have a Craftsman Saw that had the same problem and I trimmed the linkage and was able to make it not hang up at idle. I still however with an after market carb
was not able to get it to idle no matter how much I adjusted the H and L screw. I ended up buying a rebuild kit for the original carb and was able to get it running probably - good luck
Fixing things allways came very easy to me. It's strange to me that some people cant do these types of things but everyone is good at something I guess. UA-cam was a God send to a DIY guy like me. Crazy to think someone messed that saw up that bad then threw it away. They will say "Poulan is junk" when it was their fault it was broke. Good repair video!
Thanks for the great tutorials... feeling like I am deep in the saw woe weeds right now. But great to see some well laid out camera and voiceover work. And I am envious how easy you are making the tubing onto fittings work!
All I can say is welcome to the club. The one I HAD was just like this, new carb and all. I could never get it to open up. When the secondary would start, it'd lean out and die. I bent linkag4es and did everything I could think of except getting out the BIG hammer or cranking the wood splitter. All I can say now is 'Thank God and Greyhound you're GONE' as Roy Clark's song goes. Blessings!
I have the exact same saw. It's sometimes hard to start but once it starts it runs great. I can tell that looks like an aftermarket carburetor. The original carburetor has a plastic piece that opens the secondary throttle
If you'll check the parts list from whoever you order parts from they'll likely send you an Chinese-made carb & air valve. Usually the only thing that's wrong are fuel lines & the tank grommet.
You are 100% on the mark. That is Amazon/eBay Chinese after market carb for Poulan. They do work well but you have to do some modifications to make it work on Poulan 42cc saw. I ended up shortening the throttle linkage on carb with pliers to prevent rubbing on rubber closing as it was causing throttle to be stuck.
The throttle interference was exactly what I found on mine just 30 minutes ago. The aftermarket carb looks the same and that rod that is interfering with the cover flashing just as yours. I cut it out to fit and no more binding.

Hello Inside House Garage, I have my first small engine project coming up with my grandpa's old Ryobi 31cc weed eater , this idea of mine came from you because I've always been interested in it since I was younger then I started watching your vids about a month ago and I love how you always explain what you are doing and are very confident about getting every project you do running good. And that brought me the courage to start working on small engines. I hope you can read this and give me some tips on my first small engine project. Thank you
well thank you Space I appreciate you watching me. As far as tips, Patience, and lots of it. Also don't be afraid to ask questions to anyone, about something you might need some assistance on.
Good catch. It's not always obvious when the cover is part of the problem. I have run across the "works with the cover off but not on" problem a few times along the way and it's always something different... catching\pinching ubbing\stopping\etc... I would bet a Nickle that the carb he used was slightly different than the one it started with.
This is exactly what I was thinking! The aftermarket carb is just slightly different enough to cause something to bind up / rub etc. And not allowing the engine to work properly. Again, Respect to you IHG for giving it it's fair chance and having a crap load of patience!
i've had the same problem with a Poulan predator you need to cut out a piece of the plastic cover, the problem you have is the top linkage will hit the cover and cause the top throttle butterfly to open but not the bottom causing a lean condition.
I noticed the issue with the carb and as I have reviewed and played your video a couple of times I have noticed that the rod that runs thru the brass bushing @ the 8:43 mark appears that it is too straight and needs to be bent outward a bit to clear the rubber seal and the cover a bit. but I did see one gentleman (James Hedrick) state that it is an after market carb and I have to agree; however I think this adjustment may work aside from replacing the carb with an original one. Very good video and rather a puzzling but challenging task. Thank you for this video!!

Had an issue similar a week or so ago with a customers husqvarna. A Amazon non OEM service kit came with the air filter. Said air filter was maybe a thousandth to large on the throttle side and caused the throttle to stick at WOT.
I definitely think the throttle linkage is getting caught on something in the cover, I would just cut some of the plastic back or try to modify the linkage so it doesn’t do that.
Thank you! I went in search of maintenance (sparkplug, fuel filter, air filter, etc) pieces for my saw, found an inexpensive kit with a replacement carb, I thought, why not. Turns out the replacement carb interferes with the linkages. Old carb is back on again.
I have one of those... They aren't a bad saw once you manage to get the carb tuned properly. I find they tend to not be tuned well fr the factory. I am not a huge fan of that model, they have that strange x torq style carb with the top part of the carb for only air. When they work they work well.
I just got a 4218AVX from a buddy that gave up on it. Same problem! The carb is supposed to be a Zama W-26 which has a black plastic lever for the top air valve. He actually had the original carb in a box so I could compare and that's how I found it was the wrong carb. Gonna see if there is a gasket kit for the W-26.
Great video, just the right amount of detail for somebody seriously trying to fix their Poulan Pro chainsaw - liked and subbed! I have the bigger brother Poulan Pro PP4218AV saw and finally got it to run again after a thorough cleaning of the Zama C1M-W26 carburetor and replacing the airhead body assembly (broken plastic arm), new fuel lines and fuel filter. Oiler isn’t working, I am waiting on a new one to arrive. Question on a compression tester: Several YT commenters on other channels have said the Schrader valve should be closer to the engine cylinder and not at the other end of the hose next to the gauge. Other than needing to pull the starter cord several more times to pressure up the hose, what difference would it make where the valve is located? Anyway, looks like you have a LOT of great fix-it videos. Thanks for sharing them!
I've worked on several of those small poulan/husqvarnas with the 2 inlet butterfly valve carbs. Very difficult to get them running and keep them in tune. Don't know what husky engineers were thinking.

I literally just fixed my brother's saw it's the same one he got it free and I just had to adjust the screws for it to throttle hi and to idle also the cover on yours is probably a little warped grind that spot where it was rubbing on it
I had the same issue with the throttle linkage, the cause is the aftermarket carburetor, you have to cut the throttle linkage a little shorter to clear the top cover.THE SMALLERENGINEGUYS video had a video on this.

Hi home garage I have a question so I am fixing my dad’s friends chainsaw and it’s a mcculloch 1422 av and it won’t start and I saw that it had a broken primer bulb so I took almost the entire thing apart to get to it and it doesn’t look like it has any tabs on it that you press on to pop it out and I was wondering if it was possible to just pull the bulb out of the plastic casing that you connect the fuel lines to and then just put the new bulb in please let me know what you think and if it would work or not thanks home garage
yes you can. I've done a several times. I think I have some videos on here from a year ago when I was doing just that. Hold the primer firmly to keep it from rolling around. Put a small flathead screwdriver tip in the gap between the retaining ring, and the base for the bulb. @@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE hi house garage so I got the chainsaw back together and started it up and it worked just fine I just needed to adjust the carb a little bit and then I cut some wood with and it cut fine and then I shut it off and then when I came back to give it a cold start it wouldn’t start and I only changed one of the fuel lines the one going from the primer bulb to the carb and when I pressed the bulb sometimes it would stick inwards like it wouldn’t come back to it original shape and then when I would prime it the bulb would fill up a quarter of the way and then sometimes all the way and my dad told me that it might be that the fuel line that we replaced isn’t sealed around the carb properly but I would like to know what you think so let me know if you know what the problem could be thanks
What size fuel lines did you use in replacing the old ones? I have the 42cc version; it looks just like the one you fixed. I can’t complain too much as it was reconditioned when I got it nearly 12 years ago. Mine is giving me a little trouble staying running. I have pulled the carb off and was dirty; the metering diaphragm appeared soft enough to not replace. I think I need to change the fuel primer bulb, so I’ll change the filter and lines as well.
Is there a big difference of 40:1 and 50:1 mix? Some of the mixes sold state that they work for both 40 or 50:1. I love your videos you do a great job!
to be honest the difference in oil, is so tiny I don't think it matters in the short term. However, I like the idea of having more than I need, so I don't have a problem using 40:1 in a machine that says 50:1.
I run 60:1 in my Husqvarna trimmer and blower. It says to run 50:1 but we don’t feel like mixing more fuel. I use very good full synthetic motocross oil for 2 stroke race bikes. I don’t know if it will make a difference in wear on the engines but hopefully not.
thanks for that, but a long video, could end up taking over well over 30 hours to produce. Having a full time job and a second channel makes that very tough.
I see a ton of them every year and most likely fuel lines bad and metering diaphragm They run good and really all most folks need It’s all about name games of items
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE yes it has spark and it has good compression the unit has only been used twice it’s brand new i took the spark arrestor out of the exhaust too to help it breathe I also run true fuel pre mix 50:1 I’m completely stumped to what is keeping this thing from running explains why it was given to me for free I also gapped the spark plug correctly they should rename these things the pullin pro because that’s all you’ll be doing
Good diagnosis & repair, but the sort of issues you were having with that saw , makes it not worth the time to repair, plus the cost of some of the spares are outragious, just totally unjustifiable, which is why I rarely work on small equptiment any more.
I had the same problem with mine, I put an aftermarket carburetor on and it did the same thing. I trimed the cover , and it works fine. Mine is the Poulan 16/34 the carburetor look just like my replacement. My old carburetor had a little different throttle arrangement, it had a post that stuck out from the main throttle and it hit the lever for the top air valve. I took the piece off my old carburetor. Not sure if it helped or not. The cutting of the cover seems to have helped more.
Mine started after replacing the fuel lines, idled high like in the video and died as soon as I pulled the throttle. Complete junk. It's sitting by the curb for trash pickup.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE I bought the 20 volt string cutter so I have two batteries and they seem to last just fine, but I just cut small branches and a battery is same price as hours of gas and oil, the chail saw really did wreck my shoulder
Once I discovered those first few obvious mistakes I wouldn’t trust anything else to be correct, even if at first glance it appeared okay. That especially goes for what appeared to be a new, replacement carb. So many lacking knowledge, patience or attention to detail throw a new carb at a machine, and in this case it’s consistent with the other things. I would not have assumed the replacement was the correct one and I suspect that is the reason the original cover and inside edges were abraded and cut away - the new carb is the wrong one for this saw. This may explain why the original gasket was incorrect on this carb.
Man what a mess just take it to a small engine repair shop those seam like really good descent chain saw they are like a 100 dollars or 120. Not that i ever owned one.
That's the classic sign of an air leak when you have a high idle like that Still way too lean I will double check those rubber boots that you replaced for air leakage.
What with all the shoddy maintenance issues isn't it conceivable that the previous owner bought the wrong replacement carb? You shouldn't have to cut away seals and housing to make the machine operate properly.🤔🤕
I had to cut the linkage on the tip where it was hitting the plastic cover. Break out the Dremel, baby! The Chinese replacement carbs apparently all have this issue; Amazon shows several images of people who had to do the same. Very poor craftsmanship.
Poulan is the most troublesome, unreliable saw on the market. Husqvarna should be ashamed of themselves for producing it. Pay a few dollars more and get an echo or a stihl.
Unless it is a high quality name brand chainsaw it is not worth fixing even when free. You are fixing something that is not worth it but for your own knowledge. In 2023 I bought off Craigslist two saws new in box never used $80 each. A Poulan 42cc 18" & a Walmart black max 50cc 20" , both never used were gifts they didn't want.

Where am I able to buy that plastic splice for the fuel tank?
not sure, I've never had to buy one. TO be honest you don't really need it.
Btw. No video is too long. That's actually what people want is longer videos
thanks for that, but a long video, could end up taking over well over 30 hours to produce. Having a full time job and a second channel makes that very tough.
Is there any update on this project? 🤔
not yet
I see a ton of them every year and most likely fuel lines bad and metering diaphragm
They run good and really all most folks need
It’s all about name games of items
thanks again
AllWAYS replace the rubber air boot and save your self a ton of fuel problems
for sure
Does that have a heat shutter
don't think so.
That's what bothers me is tge repair shop string.
Did they put it back together ,put back all the screws. You never know
I know right, just slapped it back together
Seams like the new carb is not just right. If it were me I would take a heat gun and move the parts of the cover that'd touching it just a little.
hey you already know what I was going to do!
Is bar upside down?
you can flip the bar,
I just got one for free for the exact same reason and I can’t get it to start new carburetor and spark plug still nothing has good compression
did you check, for spark? I would need to get a compression reading before I would discount it.
Bad intake gasket on them saws mine was bad .
What kid or brand oil are ypu
bar oil not sure, It was given to me, as for 2 stroke it's black max synthetic from wally world
Good diagnosis & repair, but the sort of issues you were having with that saw , makes it not worth the time to repair, plus the cost of some of the spares are outragious, just totally unjustifiable, which is why I rarely work on small equptiment any more.
really? you stopped working on them?
Its been 10 month and there isn't a second part for this video?
unfortunately things have not worked out like I had hoped for.
The cutting of the cover seems to have helped more.
thank you Bert Grau.
Idle Screw Was In Too Far Had That Happen We’re The Choke Wouldn’t Set on an Echo and Shindawa Chainsaws 😀
Mine started after replacing the fuel lines, idled high like in the video and died as soon as I pulled the throttle. Complete junk. It's sitting by the curb for trash pickup.
I can understand your frustration
[01/03/23]What’s happened to this saw since October ?
it's on the shelf waiting for the parts but they've come in. Just putting it on the schedule. Should be soon though.
easy plug the battery in, I love my dewalt 20 volt, and my arm and sholder feel much better
batteries don't last long, they require special attention, and when you need to replace the, they are not cheap. All these hassle I would keep my ICE.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE I bought the 20 volt string cutter so I have two batteries and they seem to last just fine, but I just cut small branches and a battery is same price as hours of gas and oil, the chail saw really did wreck my shoulder
The chain righting mechanism on that machine is hopefully work,s proper
I hope so too.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE 👍
Once I discovered those first few obvious mistakes I wouldn’t trust anything else to be correct, even if at first glance it appeared okay. That especially goes for what appeared to be a new, replacement carb. So many lacking knowledge, patience or attention to detail throw a new carb at a machine, and in this case it’s consistent with the other things. I would not have assumed the replacement was the correct one and I suspect that is the reason the original cover and inside edges were abraded and cut away - the new carb is the wrong one for this saw. This may explain why the original gasket was incorrect on this carb.
you are correct, the first few mistakes should have clued me in, that things were very wrong, from the beginning.
Not the correct carburetor for that saw, I have had that same issue with my poulan
thanks
Poulans get thrown away more than anything. Fuel lines are always junked
agreed
Carb gasket wrong one
it wouldn't start if the gasket was wrong
I like the 50cc better .
wow, nice, I've got to try and find one.
Worst case scenario, modify the cover.
yes that's a good idea.
Man what a mess just take it to a small engine repair shop those seam like really good descent chain saw they are like a 100 dollars or 120. Not that i ever owned one.
that's an idea, but the price for repair would be quite high
That's the classic sign of an air leak when you have a high idle like that
Still way too lean I will double check those rubber boots that you replaced for air leakage.
thanks
What with all the shoddy maintenance issues isn't it conceivable that the previous owner bought the wrong replacement carb? You shouldn't have to cut away seals and housing to make the machine operate properly.🤔🤕
I know right, something seems wrong
I had to cut the linkage on the tip where it was hitting the plastic cover. Break out the Dremel, baby!
The Chinese replacement carbs apparently all have this issue; Amazon shows several images of people who had to do the same. Very poor craftsmanship.
you are correct, the linkage was hitting the cover
Lol what i would give to drive 20 miles in 30 minutes. Here i drive 25 miles in 2 or 3 hours.
wow!
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE lol yeah bro, miami florida.
The original fuel looked like motor oil/fuel mix. This is never a good option.
correct
Poulan is the most troublesome, unreliable saw on the market. Husqvarna should be ashamed of themselves for producing it. Pay a few dollars more and get an echo or a stihl.
they definitely have their issues.
Your skills are wasted on this POS machine. A helpful video.
some folks simple can't afford to buy a new saw, so this might help them, and thanks
Unless it is a high quality name brand chainsaw it is not worth fixing even when free. You are fixing something that is not worth it but for your own knowledge.
In 2023 I bought off Craigslist two saws new in box never used $80 each. A Poulan 42cc 18" & a Walmart black max 50cc 20" , both never used were gifts they didn't want.
you have a good point and thanks for sharing that story
Throw it back in the trash. Pullons suck. They run for one job and then never start again. Buy Stihl and they last forever and start every time.
so I've heard
Saws are junk
they all can be
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE poulans are junk and you know who owns poulan? Husqvarna and their saws are poor quality too. I own a saw shop in have fixed all brands
It’s a Poulen, it could many problems, I hate their stuff, IMO mostly junk.
what a piece of junk never been a very good brand.
They put wrong carb on ran into problem today
correct
