It was a big hit. The words were ambiguous so it snuck on the radio.

Steppenwolf was ahead of their time musically. They have a good library of songs. You may want to give a listen to The Pusher, and also Don’t Step On The Grass Sam.

Psychedelic rock or Acid rock. In A Gadda da Vita - Iron Butterfly is another great one in this genre but it must be the original 17 minute version. This one song took up an entire side of the album.

My older brother and I were driving home from the grocery story. All of a sudden the radio starts hissing and making all sorts of garbage noises. My brother starts bashing the radio to try and fix it...then the song erupts from the audio chaos. That was a sublime way to first hear this song.

I was in 8th grade when this came out. As I recall, it seemed like guys were really more into Steppenwolf than girls were (at least in the 60's) Steppenwolf was a little rough and raw, which guys could get away with listening to. Where as girls' parents back then monitored what their daughters listened to. Once we got into the 70's, Steppenwolf had made their mark and their songs were considered classics! They were definitely part of the Soundtrack of the Baby Boomers lives and they paved the way for a lot of great music to come!

"Magic Carpet Ride" got plenty of radio play back when and still does to this day on classic rock stations in the USA. The song even features in a key scene in the 1996 movie "Star Trek: First Contact". As a side note, the b-side to this single, "Sookie Sookie," is a cover of a Don Covay bop from 1965. Covay wrote "Chain of Fools" among other hit songs. The funkiest version of "Sookie Sookie", however, might be the 11 minute instrumental version Grant Green dropped in 1970. If you like a tasty guitar licks over a funky sixties groove that's the song for you.

"Right between the Sound Machine." He said stereo was new & he was sitting between the speakers. "Let the sound carry you away." One of my fav songs from when I was little & I'd go to the teen center to hang out with "the big kids." Sounds 60's to me. Very physcadelic.

Back in the day, it was instantly presumed that this was about getting high. After FM rolled out, anything was fair game on the radio. Generally, only AM was censored. AM was considered more like a public service.

This song has been played on 60s nostalgic radio stations across the US almost daily since 1968. It might even have been played more than say Fleetwood Mac, now that's saying something. For more Steppenwolf try: The Pusher, Rock Me Baby, Snowblind Friend, Monster, Don't Step On the Grass Sam, and my favorite: Earschplittenloudenboomer

Just some facts: The real name of the singer "John Kay" is "Joachim Fritz Krauledat" as he is a german-canadian who was born in Germany in 1944. As refugees (WW2) his parents took refuge to Canada. You see him most of the time with sun-glasses as he is defined as "legally blind". He only has a eyesight of 21% and is color blind as well :-/ Later he did amazing solo albums ... my favourite is "Heretics and Privateers" released in 2000 with includes the same titled song. Very bluesy! :-)

I think this song may have begun in a late 60s pipe dream and finished in an early 70s opium den. 😂 This lyric is hard to understand when they sing it but it one of my favorites; a great mix of humor and disappointment.
“Last night I held Aladdin's lamp
So I wished that I could stay
Before the thing could answer me
Well, someone came and took the lamp away
    I looked
    Around
    A lousy candle's all I found”
Great song and reaction. Thank you Harri.

I love John Kay & Steppenwolf! Grew up on them. Their deepest songs are "Renegade' about John Kay's experience escaping from behind the Iron Curtain as a child, and 'Monster' which is an epic critique of American history and culture. Also 'The Pusher' and 'Snowblind Friend' about the dangers of drug abuse.

The song is about music and its power to transport you to other places....not drugs. This song came to John Kay when he was listening to some music on his stereo while lying down with the two speakers on either side of his head. His stereo is the " sound machine" he mentions in the opening line. In the 60s, if you didn't understand a rock song, the default explanation was that it must be about drugs. I saw them live in 1969.

You're right, it IS a trip (LSD, of course). This is the best example of "psychedelic" music . Did you watch Easy Rider yet ? Back in the 60s and 70s we had FM Radio and they would play all the cool sounds, like this song. There were all kinds of cool DJs and they had their own shows. One such was Allison Steele "The Night Bird" and she'd come on at midnight. Really a great time to be young and hip . In time, FM died out, but the times will always be remembered. (Sometimes, they'd play a whole album !)

Yes it was played on the radio. That is where I first heard "Magic Carpet Ride",and became a fan. 1968 I was 13.Steppenwolf was so kool. They even sang Magic Carpet Ride on the Ed Sullivan show .Ed called them the long haired Steppenwolf. He seemed put off by them. They were kinda high when they performed, but the cool look and John Kay's sunglasses blew me away.
Later I found out he was sight impaired due to malnutrition as a child. He has an interesting life story.Check it out sometime.
I felt the same way, their sound was ahead of the times.
In "Born to be wild" he used the phrase Heavy Metal, which was something new.

Harri - that's dad (bass & backup vocals) on the right behind the bush in between far right (Goldy on keys RIP) and Larry (guitarist). On the far left is Jerry the drummer and album cover artist. He was dads best friend. (RIP) The Pusher would be an obvious suggestion (Check Nina Simone cover as well) but if you would please consider a few songs probably not suggested anywhere else by Steppenwolf (Get into the wind & Gang War Blues) off Slow Flux album both very underrated songs and John Kay on Forgotten Songs and Unsung Heros which has some classics but this (Walkin Blues) version is in my bias opinion the best version I know of! (Dad played on that album as well for John) Peace and Aloha

my brother you can only guess or suppose what our generation's music did to us and shaped our psyches. what a leap into the undefined aspects of reality that has geared us to look into the many facets of possibility that set so many of us free while the dullards sank into the cruelty of narrow minded expectations and dark dreams that only serve to limit and restrict our growth.
