The "bowl" thing stems from a series of post-season games played at the Rose Bowl Stadium. The best college football team in the east half of the country and best in the west half of the country would be invited to play an exhibition match after the season had ended. There was no official crowning of a champion. This game was purely about bragging rights and just being invited to play in the game was a huge honor as it meant one's team was being recognized as one of the best in the nation. It became a goal of many teams to be invited to play in the Rose Bowl.
Over time "Rose Bowl" became more and more attached to this prestigious game played at the end of the season and less so the stadium. Eventually other groups and people began organizing their own post-season games and they kept with the naming scheme of calling them Bowls. This is how "Bowl" became a part of american football lexicon.

    • @BigDave423
      @BigDave423 3 роки тому +2

      As an additional note...
"bowl" gets used somewhat like a suffix to mark certain peculiarities during football games, much like "gate" is used after some sort of scandal, be it sport, political, etc.

The word "Bowl" began as a geographic suffix to Rose, Cotton, Sugar, etc. for college championships. Later on it morphed into a catchall descriptor identifying a specific game much the same way "gate" from Watergate is tacked on to just about anything to describe a scandal. FYI - your "match" is our "game", and your "pitch" is our "field". We get what you mean, though.

    • @Papawill13

That is not true. "Bowl" is because of the name of the Stadium is was played in.
The Tournament of Roses held a game called the Tournament East-West Football Game, played at Tournament Park in 1902, 1916-1922.
In 1922 the Rose Bowl stadium was finished and open, and the first game played their was the 1923 Rose Bowl Game. USC beat Penn State.
"Bowl" is because of the name of the Stadium.
The Orange Bowl was played in the Stadium called the Orange Bowl.
The Sugar Bowl was played at Tulane Stadium but it became known as the Sugar Bowl.

    • @lvbfan

@@Papawill13 This. The first dedicated football stadium in the US was built at Yale University. To make building it easier (and cheaper), they dug the playing field 10-15 feet below ground, so the stadium itself could be built on level ground. During construction students and residents thought it looked like a big bowl, so started calling it the Yale Bowl. Although the school hated the nickname, they eventually agreed to make that its actual name. Other places soon ripped off Yale Bowl's basic design, and in some cases (like the Rose Bowl) was the name of the stadium. Journalists decided that the existing game name (see above) was too long, so just started calling it the Rose Bowl. Then other cities saw Pasadena making all that money and wanted in on it. Thus the Cotton Bowl (Dallas), the Sun Bowl (El Paso), the Sugar Bowl (New Orleans), the Orange Bowl (Miami) and countless others. And yes, there sometimes even amusingly named games, like the Tobacco Bowl (in Virginia) and the Glass Bowl (in Toledo, then the glass-making capital of the US).

If you want to know about Philly and sport, Broad Street Bullies are the most infamous team. NHL Philly Flyers beat the crap out of the league and won the Stanley Cup. It changed the style of the game and the way other teams appointed enforcers to protect their players. They even took on the Soviet National Team in the 80's and they skated off the ice because it was so physical.

The first post-season college extravaganza was the Rose Bowl game. It was/is played in the Rose Bowl (name coming from the stadium’s shape.) Other such post-season games, independent of shape, adopted the naming, ie, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, etc. Now there are about 25 such games.
When the first NFL-AFL Championship was held, it was called just that. The press tagged it with the name Super Bowl. Then, any game of unique consequence was called xxx-bowl (FogBowl, Body Bag Bowl and so forth) again by the media.

The Green Bay Packers hosted the Dallas Cowboys in a playoff game back in the sixties. It was brutally cold. They had an under the turf warming system that Packer coach Vince Lombardi was proud of. Unfortunately, under the tarp they had put over the field trapped moisture and froze into ice right on the surface. With the extreme cold and wind chill plus the surface, the game was named the “Ice Bowl”. Well, when you have a couple of subsequent generations of football media following, practically every game with anything out of the ordinary since has been pronounced some sort of “Bowl”!

Early games were played in stadiums with bowl-shaped designs. The Yale Bowl is considered the prototype stadium. We get the term bowl game after the Rose Bowl, which is where the 1st post-season college football game was held around the start of the 20th century. After a while, the term bowl became synonymous with college football post-season games. When the NFL was looking for a name for it's new championship game after the NFL-AFL merger, Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt suggested the Super Bowl (supposedly a play on a Super Ball, that incredibly bouncy rubber kids' ball -- I think one of his grandkids had one). Then we just started applying it to any memorable football game and it's kind of gown even beyond football now. Game of Thrones fans were anticipating a final battle between the Clegane brothers the Mountain and the Hound and referring to it as "Clegane Bowl."

College Football predates the NFL by about 50 years & they call their postseason games Bowls (at least in D1 Football Bowl Subdivision). The names of these postseason games always end with the word Bowl. Some of the stadiums also had names that ended in Bowl, such as the Cotton Bowl, Citrus Bowl, Orange Bowl, Rose Bowl, etc.
This carried over, informally, to the NFL so it's not unusual for games to be nicknamed "Bowl" after the fact. The Ice Bowl, which was the 1967 NFL Championship between the Packers & Cowboys is an example. The temperature at kickoff was about -15 degrees Fahrenheit, the field was frozen, and icicles hang from the stadium hence the name.

Philadelphia sports fans are similar to Millwall FC fans. They are known to boo their players, throw batteries at both players, broken the legs of a Santa, and one time they threw up on a 7 year old girl. America's hooligans.

They did call them the Gang Green Defense. The 80`s was such a great time to be a football fan(unless it was Tampa Bay, like me). So many 1st ballot hall of famers playing. And they loved the sport.

A very important thing about this time was the field. I doubt most people understand what it was like on that astroturf. Easy to describe, go throw a sheet on your driveway and then jump down as forcefully as you can on that sheet. Enjoy, and no, its not really that much of an exaggeration.

In American College football, there are stadiums that have "Bowl" in their name (ex: Citrus Bowl). There are also games that are played EVERY year that are called (X) "Bowl" (ex: Cotton Bowl).
In the NFL, "Bowl" is usually given to ONE specific game in history for whatever reason ([usually in the name] ex: Fog Bowl, Ice Bowl)
Besides of course The Super Bowl (annual)

@@dusty3913 Totally agree with you. I actually watched more Lions games than Chargers games on TV when Ross moved to Detroit. But the truth remains that in spite of the Chargers having a history of pretty good QBs over the years, it was Humphries who took them to the SB. :)

Another thing to note, Veterans Stadium was the worst field in the league. Uneven concrete with just an inch thick artificial grass rug with multiple seams all over it. They might as well have played in the parking lot for all those years.

Green Bay Packers from Wisconsin, their famous game is the Ice Bowl Dec. 31, 1967 the games temperature was -15 F (-26 C) we beat Dallas Cowboys. The male fans were in suits and female fans wore skirts. Pictures are in our Packer Hall of Fame that you can tour. We are nicknamed "The Frozen Tundra" at first this was home field advantage but now away teams come in 3 days before Sunday and practise on area High School Football fields to get acclimated to our weather if coming from a warm weather State. Recent team example our last game was January 22, 2022 we lost to San Francisco 49ers 13-10 The temperature with wind chill was -10 F and the 49ers had come in Wednesday night and for 3 days practised on the Bay Park Square High School Football Field.
The Most Brutal Game Injury I remember and can't watch on you tube to this day is the gruesome leg injury to Quarterback Joe Theisman on Monday night Nov. 18, 1985. He literally broke his fibula and tibia.
The Most touching and emotional game Packers vs. Raiders Dec. 22, 2003 when Quarterback Brett Favre's father past away the day before and he played anyway to a very emotional game to which Raiders fans for the first time respected our fans even after losing in the end. But since then gloves came off🤣
