In another game, this push bug wouldn’t be that bad. But in this game, where one simple slip up can kill your 100 hour character, it’s a HUGE deal.
That's precisely what happened to me last week. In a forum discussion about controls and movements, where a dev was participating, i claimed that some improvements are due. I couldnt explain to them the problems I was having to their satisfaction, so they dismissed the issue. I hope theyve changed their mind.
I turned off the aim outline for melee because it would make me think I was guaranteed to hit then I would miss and get bit. Basically assume that you might miss every time you swing, just in case
Another reason why I just don't play with infection anymore. Bugs, lousy aiming systems, and simply investing way too much team makes it impossible for me to enjoy what is more or less a 1HP experience.
@@moksound19 They would've dismissed the issue IF you could explain it lmfao
And then the push bug leads to the intended zombie pulling a bite attack and even worse it triggers the counter push to a zombie attack and in all that time you’re sorrounded and killed. Playing with multihit seems to reduce the targetting bug severely tho.
I don't know if it's just me, but I've noticed it happening alot more in the last month or so. Like a sudden "I can't fight as well as I used to" difference
I've gotten a ton of complaints about melee combat getting worse the last couple months.
Same, specifically fighting unarmed with push-stomp only. If I go this route, often my pushes will just miss a single zombie right in front of me with a target reticle. I don't think I can link videos here but I have some of it, and so do others I've seen complain about it.
Same here, seems to have gotten less precise recently
Just in the past few days it seems to have become almost impossible to enter combat stance with the right mouse button.
Honestly, main reason why I play with Multi-hit on. Being able to hit two or three zombies at once with a single attack minimizes the chances of the standing targeting bugs happening
Yeah, and to hell with people who say multi-hit is cheating, it still takes only one mistake to get dragged down and lose hours of progress
@@Rayven_420 exactly. Multi-hit won't save me from mistiming my swing against a sprinter or the like, or getting surrounded or knocked down in fence combat, or any other dumb mistake...
It will help, but not guarantee stuff...
Also the aim outline for melee is a liar. It shows the range of your weapon if you attacked with it. Meanwhile pushes are shorter range
@@qwertyram4598 Yeah I noticed that with the outline as well, made me miss more than one push in my lifetime. I'm gonna keep playing with multi-hit at least until TIS fixes the hitboxes and visualisation.
@@Rayven_420 yeah but you can go kill hordes with baseball bat easily. and you can take on any number on zombies no matter what unless you are getting flanked
@@truelich1231 Ask the devs to fix their goddamn game first, then you can go shit made up game balance for others online to your heart content.
Have you covered the dedicated ground attack exploit yet? Here's how it works : enter aim mode and move towards a standing zombie that is within melee range while doing a dedicated ground attack. You have to be walking into them while doing it in order for it to work. The ground attack will push the zombie to the ground. You can use this technique to pile up a bunch of zombies on the ground beneath your feet. It's very silly. When I discovered this, I assumed it would be fixed pretty quickly because of how easy it is to reproduce, but here we are.
In my experience this only works with stomps using spacebar + dedicated ground attack. Attacks done with spacebar are faster than left clicking too which is pretty funny.
@@Retanaru why is spacebar faster?
@@memenazi7078 your feet is closer to the ground than the weapon you have in your hands
@@memenazi7078 Its skipping the delay between swings.
The sheer number of times I got bit because my character didn't push the zombie in question made me always turn off infection by biting and enable multi-hit
I play with multi hit and melee movement disruption off.
I ain't got time to STOP SWING MISS AND DIE.
Because the game has junky mechanics.
However it IS. Good game and thus why I got it and play it.
But excuse me if I'm playing "easy" mode because the game wants to fuck you every 20 seconds.
Even dark souls is in the corner over there saying.
DS aye.. chill bro.
Let them at least HIT YOU.
PZ don't your enemies have like 199999999999 health points? While the strongest player weapon only does 100?
DS. .... what's your point?
@@JS-rv3et No self-respecting person really cares what others use for their settings, as long as you're having fun, you're playing Project Zomboid right.
Same. It sometimes even doesn't register the animation and even straight on it misses
Have you ever addressed the shooting bug where your character will shoot at distant zombies even though nearby zombies are highlighted? Seems to happen more with rifles.
YES, oh my god this is my biggest grief with using guns anymore lately. It's the worst when one is closing in on you, lit up green like a traffic light, but no matter how many shots you take, the shots just fly right past that one zed, and plugs a zombie BEHIND the targeted one. So infuriating.
@IFistedABear I'm hoping this gets fixed with build 42 but I haven't seen anyone talking about it other than a few steam forum posts. I did an all gun run and it became so tedious because of this
I think I have only seen this with britas weapon pack on. though I could be wrong.
doesn't bother me I hate britas weapon pack lol
@@xavior1352 i play vanilla
@@HyperionCSS then at least its more common with britas.
Nah, the bug where your attack or push hits a zombie that's _behind_ the highlighted one in front happens _a lot_ with regular shamblers. Happens a couple times every hour of gameplay for me. Not a rare occurence at all.
I reproduced it in debug and sent the video to the devs about a year ago I think.
Edit: it also is not caused by the green highlight flickering - my pushes mistarget all the time while the highlight is as stable as ever. I don't believe it is caused by attack animations as it happens with shamblers just shambling towards me - but my memory may be fuzzy there.
I would actually love to see a similar style of video for Barotrauma, there are a lot of mechanics and features that are not very well known. I feel like it would fit this style of video perfectly
Wow literally every death I’ve experienced since I got the game has been to this push bug! I couldn’t figure out what was going wrong, and why my arms or weapon would just phase through a zombie who would then bite me!! I wondered if I was doing something wrong! I hope they fix this asap!
Sums up my experience with PZ, standing attacks are very forgiving where ground attacks require too much precision.
Have you ever mentioned playing Barotrauma before or is this the first time?
I got into it a couple months ago and now I'm questioning whether I found it on my own
I've definitely mentioned it on streams, and used it as an example once when talking about the first aid system in a video.
@@Retanaru I would shed real tears if you started making Barotrauma content
I would LOVE it if this channel started making Barotrauma content. That game has a lot of buggy mechanics that aren't obvious at first glance (just like PZ) so it would be awesome to have Retanaru explain them.
i hope devs fix this and runner zed stop animation when attacking, it seems to me that they clip just trough you and read it as if were from behind, instantly detecting it as a bite
Sprinters zombies are strange, They slow your movement down once they get close to you. So i can see that being possibility. especially when the zombie hit box can move far forward. I use 2 methods to get get out of the sprinter slow down effect. I probably should make a video about it but i don't dev's kill my fun lol
Talking about pushing bugs, I experienced multiple times a bug with pushing and spears. It seems that the critical hit you get with a spear creates some sort of killzone-hitbox in front of you, and that it lingers for a tiny bit, thus I've sometimes killed a zed with a spear, tried to push another one coming at me and it instantly killed it just by pushing it.
It's definitely an advantageous bug for the player, but still pretty ridiculous to see in action.
Wow the shove bug happened to me countless times, fucked up my countless runs but I just don't realise it, this is some great video.
I've noticed this a lot and just thought it was some sort of random failure mechanic.
"is this a bug, or a feature meant to torment us?"
a question I ask myself pretty often while playing zomboid 😅
@@madirebekah3660 most accurate statement :D
There is hundred of useless mod and not a single one that fixes this issue
I've been playing on and off for years before PZ touched steam, and you not only play x50 (possibly literally) better than me, and teach me so many things in EVERY video without fail.
You're unbelievably awesome man, and this word is extremely OVER, OVER, OVER used but you're so damn underrated.
You're an absolute legend
Yarr! Been looking forward to this one :)
Hopefully it answered any questions.
@@Retanaru another layer of mist removed, in a clear and concise fashion. Thank you sir o7
I never paid a ton of mind to the combat jank. I just got used to it, especially with the weirdness of tryna hit downed zombies in the head
edit: Also with the fence lunging zombies I just...Don't try to hit them very often- A few quick kills usually isn't worth the risk of missing and falling down
the ones on the ground you just have to put yourself so you stomp their head, not their toes. That way you will most likely insta kill them. And vaulting zombies are kind of weird sometimes but you put your back to the fence, and hold right click, they will just go through you for some reason and you can get some easy kills
Great info for PZ players.
Now talk about the bug of aiming at a zombie in front of you but randomly the shot hits a non-highlighted target. This bug can be seen in one of @KokoplaysMB's videos where he was clearing The Mall with a firearm ("BATTLE FOR THE MALL" specifically at minute 17 : 20).
I'm dealing with that rn.
Shotgun with short choke on.
Zombie is literally an inch from the barrel I shoot.
And 2 zombies WAY left field fall down.
I'm like nigga what
Wow, literally unsurvivable.
That's why I don't upgrade my character and let it die everyday instead... Aim totally on killing Zombies and find foods
0:56
This angle RIGHT HERE. This is what I call the Dead Zone. Quite a few runs have ended because my character doesn’t like to hit all the zombies in this direction.
I don’t know why even with multihit, my character can’t hit zombies doing this.
What's up Lemmy? How are those fixes going? Oh... you hired people to work on cows instead? Ok.......
You should do a video on how to deal with zombies that are directly next to you, I've died several times on ravencreek when I can't tell what direction to attack a zombie and it bites me in the back
when you play at a high level where you yourself have become like 95% consistent, this is what starts to kill you. i really hope they fix this in b42
Don't do what I did and complain about it in reddit, they'll just tell you its a skill issue. 🙄Anyway I just ended up turning infections off, got tired of losing characters because of inconsistencies/bugs with the targeting.
When will TIS hire you as an official bug tester?
weapon multihit supremacy (we can't suffer from the push bug)
I faced a crawler and kicked him in the chest, foot was inside his chest and everything. Hit didnt register and i got stunned, then bitten from the side and instakilled by one other zombie, ending my first 30 hour run.
now i have an excuse to play with multi-hit, never once i pushed the wrong zombie and died :D
push bug ptsd
Because this i use the mod CheatMenu.
After this sh*t happen and i get bite, i just heal my char 😕
I wouldn’t consider hitting downed zombies on the head to be that hard, after a few minutes I got used to it and basically never miss the head
Yeah, this why i nvr fight 2 zombie that too close at once
Question for a new video. Can you go over the pain mechanics in the game? I wonder how pain effects more then one and two handed weapons but guns as well. I have seen my pain at 13 out of 100 and it would drop my shotgun damage by 75%. I know you did one on healing but I feel that explaining how pain effects other things
also yeah I feel like sprinters are a bit too janky currently but they still add a bit to the game, push juggling 2 sprinters does in fact more consistently screw up
Mister lampery's is probably the angle. Most birds eye games have the problem where at certain angles it will look like your character should hit/shouldn't but will do the other instead. I've noticed a couple of dead zones where if you hit at a certain angle your character will never get the hit even on a standing zombie while they are highlighted green, I've even seen it happen with firearms where I shoot 5 rounds from a m14 at a zombie with aiming 10 while standing still/green zombie and it misses all 5 shots, then I walk half a tile downward and then one shot him first hit. The problems are most noticible on spears imo because they have the most wonky min/max range and have the longest range.
you're correct
Yeah this is something I've noticed MULTIPLE times. Thanks for the info Ret!
Getting good at combat in this game isn't really about killing the zombies, it's more along the lines of making sure if somthing goes wrong you're not in a position where the game can punish you. It's a bit of a frustrating state with all the jank around the combat.
So true!
it IS still playable though. Frustrating and sometimes unintuitive, but playable.
@@IschmarVI yes, very much so playable, but leaves plenty to be desired.
I'm sure I found ground combat awkward once, but I feel like I'm pretty comfortable with it these days. I don't play with aiming highlights for melee attacks, so perhaps that isn't there to distract me. Food for thought.
Start doing barotrauma vids as well! Would love to see them too.
Champ video, my frood.
It has killed me plenty of times. I really hope they do adjust this somewhat.
This has been a problem all the way back in build 39 at least. If anything this and the phasing zombies used to be less of a problem before the animation rework.
Imo they got steadily worse after multiplayer release, but I don't really know why.
For the love of god, please make a barotrauma video. I want to learn something funny
Eventually I will, but for now I can't keep up with the speed they update things.
@@Retanaru yea I bought this game last year and the amount of things is just massive. I think its good, keeps the game fresh.
I didn't expect a Barotrauma clip. It's good to see that many people give attention to this wonderful and yet not so known game.
Barotrauma moment
grub
literally EVERY character i have die is because of the push bug or a swing miss that definitely should have hit, zombie highlighted and everything yes misses and bite, never fails. makes this game very frustrating to play especially because the most fun come later in the game, the game is so satisfying in the mid-later stages yet i die to dumb stuff all the time
I've experienced similar problems but with guns. When there are a lot of zombies my chracter tends to shoot not the highlighted zombies but some in the back. This can cause some issues especially when a zombie is right next to you and the character decides to shoot some random zombie in a crowd.
Or maybe it's a game mechanic of missing shoots and therefore hitting another zombie? I don't know but it seems more like a bug that could get you killed.
P.S. I believe this bug happens mostly with ranged guns but sometimes I have noticed it with shotguns too.
I was messing around with a max aiming guy and an assault rifle, guys were bright green but I hit zomboys way behind him.
it's like You're not allowed to hit the closet threat to you. Melee weapons with long range and fast attack do this as well. I have this happen tiny bit with pushing.
I how combat this issue is to use different angels so that my aim con can shoot into less dense parts of the hoard. It take a lot movement and it's really hard for to explain in tex lol
I also moved my sprint key from alt to capslock. That way when i hold alt i can instantly shot who fall down.
I've always felt that the "drag down" and "fence lunge" were kinda lazy band aid mechanics put into the game so the devs won't have to overhaul and fix the combat system.
As I'm aware devs are planning to improve combat, aiming and PVP system in next updates so I hope it won't be that janky anymore.
can you make a video on thin/thick skine and how it does effect tailoring?
I hope Build 42 irons out some of the combat bugs and oddities, it's nice knowing Lemmy watches these videos. I can definitely say the push bug has happened to me a few times and I don't play on sprinters.
Explains a lot, gonna have to rewatch to see if the angle you're at influences it.
what was the first game?
Barotrauma
How you display that range cone? Can you use it for firearm too? Is it mod or something? I cant find it
So what youre saying is.... MULTI HIT ON IT IS
The katana is able to hit zombies at an insane range, it looks like a foot between the end of the blade and the zomboid
HOW TF I CAN NOT PUSH 2 ROTTING BODIES WITH THE 6 FEET SPEAR I AM HOLDING I am using multi hit just to prevent this bs bug killing me
Such a great video. Well done, man.
I still come back to this video if only for therapy for CONSTANTLY encountering it or working around it. Most of Zomboid's jank can be worked around, but combat jankiness is just unforgivable in a high-stakes style game like this. I think I'll just have to bite the bullet and just not play with sprinters, but it sucks because I find a lot of fun in playing with mixes of different speeds. And given Indie stone's track record of bugfixing, I'll probably never play against sprinters again lol.
That Latcher looks too small, must be a baby, or maybe you're actually piloting a GIGANTIC MECH SUIT.
It's not always janky it just is before you die.
My biggest peeve in this game isn't even that, its the amount of animations that you just can't interrupt, like the shouldering off a zombie from behind one, causing you to stay in one place one moment too long and you get attacked from behind again, and it creates a feedback loop until you are surrounded or an attack lands. Though, the amount of times i have died because I push a few zombies (multihit) and somehow not a single one gets pushed is insane. Then there is the m16 missing upwards of 8 god damn shots on the same zombie at close range, even without a magnifying scope and a high aiming lvl.
I've wondered. How does fractures occur? Is it when a body part reaches a certain amount of HP? Does scratches contribute towards leading to a fracture? Or is it always on impact? I've never gotten a fracture from being bit or scratched before, or tripping. Always from car crashes, blunt weapons, bullets, or falling. That would be interesting to know!
Pretty sure it is just taking a hard enough force of blunt trauma upon impact. Scratches affecting wouldn't make sense, but I haven't done any testing, so idk for sure
Didn't think to see Barotrauma in your PZ videos. And that Latcher is tiny. And what mod is being used for that diving suit? It doesn't look like a vanilla one. Too shiny and detailed.
That's a great explanation for melee, but can you explain to me how my Lvl 9 aim character missed one zombie in front if her with a shotgun and got bitten?
I've played for a while and zombie collision still eludes me, I've had times where I've managed to run through a mob of zombies unscathed and times where bumping into a single zombie while running stops me dead on my tracks. Do you know the specific underlying mechanics of the system?
As much as I love project zomboid (I have like a 100+ hours in it) the aiming and fighting has got to be one of my least favorite things about it. There have been many a times where I ready for a brawl only to miss, be lunged at, bitten, and the run is over.
The isometric camera/pov also makes the game weird. Calling out directions to friends is always confusing cause things aren’t truly up, down left, or right. And placing objects onto tables has always been a struggle that you have to learn from experience.
Great game though none the less, love the detail, customization, and toughness of it
Reeeeaaaly annoying, game breaking? Sorta yeah, not really. With multihit it's less of an issue, but then again melee is the bread and butter of gameplay in this game. I luckily haven't experienced this in my own 100 hour save, due to using heavy long bladed weapons. This may be fixed soon fellow survivors, for now use multi hit and spam spacebar.
I think this bug occured due to reworking of original multi-hit system. Devs just couldn't do any better at already f*ed up system
I stopped playing PZ now. I died because of nonsense like that and that's absolutely killing the fun. Why should I invest the time if I know that I will get screwed? Too bad.
Fence Lunge[off] is the only way to play the game. Getting knocked down and chomped by a zombie slapping your ankle is only funny the first time.
Auto close range push attack can get your character killed sometime mostly with guns
So basically Zomboid combat sucks ass. I think every video I watch further into the meta of this game the less I want to play it.
any chance of exploring barotrauma game mechanics?
I'm gonna comment this every time you use FF9 music. Please never stop using FF9 music.
I cant even cry, Im just going to laugh 😂😂😂😂
This opening made me wanna see you analyze barotrauma mechanics
Yeaaah for as much as I love one life games, I just had to quit project zomboid for all of it's bs. I appreciate it for what it is but the is one of the many things that will make it feel like you are not even dying to your own stupidity as you should. Compounding this, once I got past 2 months and realized there is nothing more to the game yet after 10 years of development ...ehhh I just got bored
Valuable video! I was looking for the answer, why I cannot aim 1 level down with guns, but this is horrible too
Thats why I always disable that zombies can attack after a lunge
thats why I never push zombies, always trying to maintain the distance. And god forbid to fight melee two sprinters at the time.
I wanna play with sprinters so badly but I just lost another 10% sprinters run because of this and I notice is soo much more because of this video.
finally, actuoll proof of me not going mad and indeed me somehow missing a push onto a zombie and still getting bit. My friends can finally rest easy becouse they wont think im schizophrenic
This is pretty much why I have a cheat menu mod. Some deaths are just so unfair I enable the mod and give my stats back... and a cool car, then disable it lol.
Just died because I had multihit on and instead of hitting the 3 zombies in front of me, the game decided that it was better to swing at the zombie that was to the left and OUT of range.
This shit is so frustrating.
I’ve never noticed a single problem with shoving in this game
the other day i submitted feedback to the devs about how the way they implemented the combat cursor causes your character to spin 90 degrees away from where your mouse was when you hit the ctrl button if you're aiming to the left or right & the devs told me that's intended, & that getting used to just playing around the bugged controls is "part of the learning the game, just like any other game". i had just bought the game so they earned my refund
Why I turn the lunging fence zombies off 😂
this is the beauty of it being in early access and always having debug mode in your pocket lol
They should make it so u can chop off limbs so standing combat is less horrible
It seems like it's something easy to fix. Like having the calculation of the aiming system be locked to a maximum distance of the shove range so that it's impossible to target outside of that range? It doesn't make sense that a shove would be able to target outside of its range.
This got me to quit the game when they changed the aiming system. I came back and am enjoying it all over again with mods and settings changes. You can alter your play style around this bug somewhat but it is still annoying.
I’m going to say something that maybe untrue but I believe it’s not regarding your weapons hit range but your stomp when they fall to the ground.
still gets me thinking
janky fcking hitreg is the reason for every single one of my deaths and the reason i stopped playing
nothing more infuriating than playing a perma death game which kills you for no reason other than broken combat
