'Esmerelda' Animatic 2nd Part (The Hunchback of Notre Dame Musical)

  • For those unfamiliar with the musical version of Disney's Hunchback and need context, this part of the song takes place just after Phoebus is discharged of his duties as a soldier for refusing to carry out Frollo's orders, and Esmerelda jumps out from the crowd to defend him. In a twist that alludes to the original novel, Frollo gets a hold of Esmerelda's dagger, stabs Phoebus in a mad rage, and frames Esmerelda for it. Esmerelda only has enough time to make off with Phoebus using her smoke-and-mirror parlor tricks right in front of everyone, giving Frollo more excuse to declare her guilty of "witchcraft", and urging the entirety of Paris to torch the city down until she's found!

If this was the actual Disney film it would have been 100 times darker.

Sir, you made a grown man cry watching this. If Disney sees this and doesn’t offer you a job in animation, they would be doing themselves a great disservice.

For some reason, when I tried to turn on the bell icon using my other device, the command to get all notifications was apparently never going through. But now the setting seems to be fixed, after I tried turning on the bell icon using my main computer.
"Esmeralda" is easily one of my favorite songs out of all those unique to the Disneyfied stage plays, and your animatic perfectly captures the tone I would imagine. One thing I always found odd about certain versions of the song is that the original German version had verses for Quasimodo/Frollo/Phoebus. Meanwhile, the King's Academy high school version replaced Phoebus' verse with more Frollo lyrics, and the La Jolla/Papermill versions appear to excise some of Frollo's verses completely.
When I was outlining my own hypothetical live-action remake, this has been my ideal rendition, of course with Pierre Gringoire substituting for Phoebus...
    FROLLO / SOLDIERS:
    Hunt down the gypsy Esmeralda
    Don't let her flee
    And vanish in the night
These are the flames of Esmeralda
    While she is free
    Our torches will burn bright
    QUASIMODO:
    Fire! Fire! Smoke and flame
    Esmeralda, where are you?
In this dark, I call your name
Is that all that I can do?
    GRINGOIRE:
What have I done for Esmeralda?
Why do I hear her voice inside my head?
Why do I think of Esmeralda?
With my career and prospects left for dead
    FROLLO:
    Now my duty calls
    Paris is burning
Well lit to expose her secret lair
    Hidden someplace out there...
    QUASIMODO:
Out there, somewhere she is lost...
    GRINGOIRE:
    Somewhere she is lost...
    QUASIMODO / GRINGOIRE:
    Esmeralda!
    QUASIMODO / GRINGOIRE / FROLLO:
Where is the girl called Esmeralda?
    The flames grow tall
    And sharp as fleurs-de-lis
    All Paris burns for Esmeralda
    And still it all
Comes down to her and me
    FROLLO:
    The devil dwells in Esmeralda
    QUASIMODO:
    Oh Esmeralda, Oh Esmeralda
    GRINGOIRE:
    I've got to find her...
    FROLLO:
    Resist his charm
    EVERYONE IN SEQUENCE:
Wake up the city and sound the alarm!
Wake up the city and sound the alarm!
Wake up the city and sound the alarm!
    ALL PRINCIPLES:
These are the flames of Esmeralda
    The night is singing
    Of Esmeralda
Even the bells of Notre Dame!

Thank-you very much for the compliments! It's definitely one of my favorite songs too, I'm glad that you felt the animatic captured the essence of the scene. I remember that section of your presentation clear as day and felt it did justice to the song and it's sense of urgency, as well as progressing the story.
The one thing I would like to say for my money is that if this modern version of the musical had gone with Frollo's lines from the German version: "Oh now my duty calls... Paris is burning..." instead of: "Good people of Paris, I've heard the calling of the lord...", I would likely have done scene cuts/transitions a bit differently.
When listening to the German version, my idea for it is that during its transitions to the scenes of the three male leads and their plight, I would have the camera doing a rapid 360-degree swings around each of them (similar to the Tom Hanks monologue at the end of 'Cast Away'), giving a sight of both the characters expressions and the sight of Paris' decimation from each of their perspectives, then cutting it so that it fades to the next character in the next verse, until we pull back from Notre Dame during: "Out there, somewhere she is lost..."
(If all this makes any sense.)

    • @markcobuzzi826
      @markcobuzzi826 4 роки тому +2

Because my hypothetical version of Paris burning has Frollo making a speech to the Parisians first, that is presumably where the equivalent to “Good people of Paris, I've heard the calling of the lord..." would play out.
Now that you reminded me, I still have yet to see “Cast Away” myself all the way through, even after many years of it being on my list. That 360-degree shot idea sounds like another good one.

Someone get this guy to head over to Disney and make them ensure any live action remake of the Hunchback of Notre Dame has the songs and action sequences of the musical; this masterpiece needs some folks to notice it! And make sure Frollo is back to being archdeacon just like the novel.

Oh my goodness I don't even know what to say. This is one of my favourite songs from the musical and you did it so beautifully. I'm actually crying. The imagery and the colours are stunning. I can actually feel the tension in the city. The use of fire to form her face and the urgency of the soldiers trying to find her is impeccable. The way she's running is just heartbreaking. Whenever I listen to this song I always imagine it on a stage so I never really get the full intensity until now. Frollo sent a legion after one girl and was prepared to burn the city down to get her. This song is so beautifully sad and you captured it perfectly ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I Was mainly blown away with Frollo, the way you captured his emotions and that ending! How did you get to do the effects of fire moving and the smoke!? I MUST KNOW LOL!! THAT WAS INCREDIBLE!! I APPLAUD YOU A THOUSAND TIMES!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
PS. Are you thinking of doing Hellfire (PLEASE!) lol & "God Help The Outcast" or "Out there"?

    • @jacobbelow
      @jacobbelow  2 роки тому +2

First of all, thank-you for all the high praises. They mean a lot to me!
Secondly, to answer your question as to how I did the fire and smoke effects...all of this was done in Adobe AfterEffects. The primary tool that I used was called Turbulent Displacement, under Noise effects. I painted the fire and smoke as PNGs in Photoshop, imported them into AfterEffects, and animated the center of the Turbulent Displacement tool which animated the images being warped.
Thirdly, I currently have a very busy schedule which is preventing me from doing more animatics at the moment (not helped by UA-cam's constantly-changing copyright policies). And for Hunchback, I namely wanted to do the songs from the musical that weren't in the movie, to express my vision for how they might look animated (or even in live-action). If you want more of that, I would recommend my UA-cam friend, Mark Cobuzzi, to see his playlist on how he would envision a live-action remake to Hunchback, as he and I have bounced a lot of ideas off of each other: ua-cam.com/play/PLRK5vyk_O6i34PLiarYMZVOrutsE8pdw2.html
But of course, if I had more time (and money) on my hands, what I REALLY would want to do is flesh out these animatics into full-on animations (or even recruit an animation team to help me do that).

That’s incredible!! I know only basic things in after effects since I’m always animating and doing my animatics the more storyboard ish way but I add some moving animation to make the frames/panels move smoothly and not just jump out the random. I like mine to move with the flow lol my best tools are photoshop, premiere & Storyboarder a (sometimes I add procreate and after effects for certain specific things) I love doing fire animation frame by frame but I could never do what you do with the air being so thick and moving like that and the smoke like that, I was seriously blown away! I wish I knew how to do that seriously lol now I wish I used more after effects in my storyboarding/animation classes (since my major was mainly Ilustration)
And I completely understand the frustration with the stupid YT copyright policies always changing, feel like can never post anything without them poking your ass lol especially if you have music from somewhere but at least you out in that only the animatic belongs to you or out a warning, right? Like some of mine have some warning for any mature content like violence, blood, nudity etc.
I was just so thrilled that I found your animatics cause seriously they’re amazing and beautiful! And Hunchback is my MOVIE!! I live and breathe it lol EVERY SINGLE SONG/VERSION EVERYTHING! Movie, Disney, book, musical, cartoon, ballet, lives ALL OF THEM I LOVE!!!
I’ve done 2 Hellfire animatics (going for a third soon) THAT SONG OMG!!! 🔥🔥
Again thank you making these, u seriously made my day! And feel free to look at some of my animatics if you want, I’m right now nearly finishing my new one to post this month. 🔥💖💕👍👏👏
PS. Have you considered doing songs from the musical “Notre Dame De Paris”
Have you heard the music from the one? It’s gourgeous. My favoirte songs are mainly Frollo’s “Your love will kill me” & “I’m a Priest” since he’s singing to or about Esmeralda almost Hellfire ish feels again. Or “Belle” which is all 3 men singing their each individual love for her. I highly recommend it! 😁

Disney was my primary introduction to the material, but I have seen just about every film adaptation out there (my personal non-favorite being the 1939 Charles Laughton version), and a lot of musical adaptations (and yes, that includes "Notre Dame de Paris" which is quite good, with plenty of good selections of music)!

Ah yes. The King's Academy version! I'm not sure if you knew this, but that show was watered-down/reworked combination of the movie and the of the first stage adaptation of Disney's Hunchback, 'Der Glöckner von Notre Dame', which ran in Berlin from 1999-2002. In that version, Phoebus has the singing verses that he does in the modern version: ua-cam.com/video/nZahG3P8UK0/v-deo.html

Jacob Below my only issues with the show are Judge Frollo’s costume and the ending. I appreciate trying to give Frollo a chance at redemption, but it was a cop out not to kill him off. Keeping Esmeralda alive I get and that didn’t bother me. But keeping Frollo alive was kind of lame.
Also it didn’t know what ending it wanted to be. It tried to combine the happy ending of the 1996 film and the sad ending of the 1999 - 2002 Berlin play but it didn’t work out. Even if you didn’t like that Esmeralda lived in the movie, at least they had plan and followed it through. It seemed like they didn’t have a plan. If you wanna keep Esmeralda alive. That’s great. If you wanna kill her off that’s cool. I’m down with it. Just make a move and stick with it. You’re not going to please everyone.

Did you know that this was going to be original ending for the 1996 Animated Film:
"The filmmakers briefly considered having Quasimodo killed off, since that is his fate in the original novel. He was originally supposed to be stabbed by Judge Frollo, then Esmeralda regains consciousness and tries to save him by killing Frollo. Phoebus was then supposed to meet up with them, and Quasimodo's last wish was to ring the bells one last time. They take him to the bells, then Esmeralda and Phoebus help him ring the bells as he dies. The final shot was going to include Esmeralda and Phoebus crying over their best friend as the people of Paris cheer for their success, unaware of Quasimodo's death" - IMDB. www.imdb.com/title/tt0116583/trivia?ref_=tt_trv_trv
