Miyazaki is a genius, not only did he manage to create one of the best and hardest rpg-ish out there, but he also created an entire new genre.. i mean look at how many games are adopting this style of gameplay. Dark souls is definitely its own genre.
@Dula.D and yes, he did, that's why when you hear games like this being made, they're called "soulslike" and not (whatever you're claiming make the genre) now beat your feet and kick rocks. And please, go find a fkn friend instead of skimming through 2017 post commenting cause you have no one else to talk to 🤡😺
A. We already have a name for the genre. It's souls-like. B. There are difficulty choices you can make in game. Read up on the enemies, and how to play their AI against them, use magic, or ranged. If you make the right choices the games get much easier, and making a choice about how you want to play seems like a much better way to manage difficulty than a slider. Besides that Dark Souls specifically uses the difficulty as part of the narrative. It's a cruel world, and your character experiences all of that pain. In the end there's no way you can lose in a Souls game, unless you quit. Which is represented by the lore. An undead can keep fighting forever, as long as they have a purpose, but of they complete their task, or give up, they go hollow. That's what quitting is. Going hollow.
@avarickan, Many games been called clones/like before souls games been made. Doom clones, god of war clones/DMC clones. The term won't stick and people will change the naming, So I prefer the "prepare to die games" and this game is more like Bloodborne gameplay than Souls games so the souls like won't fit here.
Firstly it's called a souls-like. Secondly git gud isn't a criticism, it's a challenge, and a bit of a joke. It isn't meant to be mean, but more as encouragement to get better at the games. Realize that these are games that have gotten people out of depression because they're so encouraging, they require your best, but want you to succeed. The community is the same way.
The game is great, only skilled players can play it though, it is better than Dark Souls in a few areas in my opinion, for one the combat is just better and more in depth.
Deck 13 really did this game good, solid combat and environment. The story could have been more diverse but for a game with limited budget, they did really well.
I've played every dark souls games and Lords of the Fallen and this one is really more challenging ! There's no easy mode with ranged magic like DS, almost no ranged attack in this game. No abusing heavy shield either, block need to be timed well since it drains stamina (but it allows counter-attack so it's still very good). You really die in a couple of hit, even after 15 hours of gameplay and upgraded armor (in DS, you can really become a tank with the right items) As in LotF, running attack is still super OP and you end up just spamming it in tense situation (stay far, wait for an opening, running attack, get far again) One nice thing that first pissed me off, was in the third area where you start having pits close to where you fight and you die a lot dodging into a pit. It's annoying but it forced me to rely more on the block/counter mechanics.
Gameranx is definitely my #1 place to go for things like this. I feel I can always trust your judgement. Plus, you're all really cool people. Can't beat those odds in my book.
I enjoy how the heavier your weapon is the more slug like your character moves. It actually impacts the swing speed and the character reacts to the weight in a realistic way. The chip progression through leveling where you can swap put chips on the fly but not all of them make it very easy to switch weapon styles too if you get too bored of playing with the same class
Already played 9 hours since release, and never played any Dark Souls game before. And, man, I love The Surge so far! The levels are challenging, but not unfair, characters, that you meet on your way are seem to have progress on their own, like that "Davey" guy, who needs his medicine. The bosses are quite interesting to figure out the way you need to beat them, and weapons 'n armor pieces look absolutely fantastic. I guess all they had to add to DS to make it look cool - just make it Sci-Fi.
It's INCREDIBLY fun. like most souls esque games, finding your way around the environment can be tricky, and you lose all of your scrap if you die (but can recover it). The big kicker with the scrap is that you can bank it. The Surge is notably easier than dark souls, mostly because there isn't a cheap death lurking around every corner, and the bosses are actually fair; challenging, but fair. I'm gonna get hate for this, but personally, this is better than dark souls in every way outside of the story and atmosphere.

I'm a couple hours in and I can't wait to play it again. The combat is intuitive, fast and fresh with the execution animations being the cherry on top. Grinding for necessary parts doesn't feel like a chore but rather a treat. The futuristic industrial setting is a nice departure from the Souls games.
Something to note that wasn't mentioned in the video: dodges do not have invincibility frames so you can't pass through attacks by dodging. While it makes the fundamental combat more challenging, it limited level design a bit and enemy aggression/pressure and groups are uncommon. Most of the fighting you'll do one on one and in the few instances you do stumble across a group of mobs you're better off kiting them off one by one.
Near the end it's very common to fight against group. Moreover it's not difficult because you already know how to play your build properly. But yeah, it's much easier to play against usual mobs in DS. Because you are invincible in block and invincible during dodge. Surge is not only about character progression. But your skill progression too. And it's very satisfying that you can fight against dog+2 enemy at the same time.
Also I'm surprised he made no mention of the hopping/ducking mechanic. Most reviewers never touch on the minor points like that, but anyone who plays this game ought to know that if you manage to successfully hop over/duck under an attack and land the counterattack, it's seriously one of the most damaging attacks you can do and it knocks most enemies on their asses.
@@THEmonochromebanana I'm revisiting soulslikes after beating elden ring when it came out, just finished nioh and has been the hardest till this point, just bought the surge and this sounds like a very good piece of advice
i really couldnt understand why so many reviewer say this game is bad, i tried it and i cant stop playing even repeat it with ng plus 2. its a great game if in your brain always compare it to darksouls than you are a fool they are different game so play it and enjoy it as it is don't expect the surge to work like darksouls and complain if it doesn't. i really regret to listen to them who rate surge as bad game so i didn't try the surge early on, until its free on psn.
"Dying genre" my ass! With the release of _Bloodborne_ in 2015 and _Dark Souls 3_ in 2016, more people than ever were exposed to the genre, and people like Deck 13 are capitalizing on it to produce some truly incredible games.
I played Lords of the Fallen. Got a little far into it before dropping it and hated how clunky and slow and terribly designed it was. With that in mind, I love the Surge. Two additional points to Gameranx; there is a timer when you die to get your items back, but the timer increases when you kill enemies, so you can still progress through the game the same way you did before you died instead of having to rush through and get your items. Blocking is incredibly useful against human type enemies. I haven't tried it against the larger mechs but blocking is wonderful, coupling it with the dodge they really do make a good hybrid system for approaching combat. I'm not too far into it so I won't comment on the story but I really adore the detail they put in to the environment, I know many people won't notice but it really is quite detailed and even informative in some cases. For example, one of the first bosses would generally be unintuitive like Gameranx said, where without help or information its difficult to figure it out, but in the environment there are signs that other NPCs have written that hint to what you're supposed to do, which I won't spoil in case people want to give it a shot. The level design is amazing. Its definitely better than the Souls series, and probably better than Dark Souls 1. It contends well with Bloodborne's style of level design too. I love the detail in the little stories too, like the descriptions on the items or even how you have the companies brand at the bottom of your screen because you're using their interface, and even how health bars only show up because of an implant you've gotten. Detail in the environment factors into this too, but I know everyone won't appreciate it. They don't have to either, but its there if anyone wants some more depth to the game.
The only thing you need to know before buying this game: Dark Souls + Sci-Fi. There has been no real 3D iteration of this duo in a game before the Surge.
Dis is the first souls-like game i've picked up and truly experienced pain. I love this game and its mechanics, it is insanely hard and you might drop it here and there, but i assure you, that you will come back to play some more. 11/10
I'm so tired of people calling everything a clone! Just say souls-like. Kind of like how Metroid-Vania is a term people use. I'm a Souls-Borne vet and i love games that adopt some of the mechanics and do them well. (salt and sanctuary and Nioh) But let's not call them clones. I mean dear god, people are calling the new Quake game an Overwatch clone!! Has no on heard of an arena shooter?!?!
And here I am, 2 years after this video has been published and actually AFTER I bought the game on Steam summer sale. And so far after like...6 hours,I can only confirm what's been said in this video. The game is definetely worth getting and it's refreshing in the soulslike genre. Now I just hope I'll be able to finish it before the sequel comes out,'cause yes,if you're interested in the subject: The Surge 2 is going to be released on September 24th
the Devs have come a long way from Lords of the Fallen and I must say that they have improved a lot with this game. This game is fun and addictive! The sci-fi elements and crafting tech adds to the experience. Been waiting for a sci-fi souls like game. Not to mentioned it runs pretty well with my PC with less storage space. Good job, Deck13!
what i think is one big positive thing: you have to use your brain. What gear do i need, Learning your enemies...use your drone right and so on. its much fun and very challenging.
Does a garden bloom overnight? Was Rome built in a day? We all know the answers to these questions so why does everyone expect the atmosphere to be healed so quickly.
I only watch these videos after I buy each game, but I get it, you wanna justify it. These videos always make me feel better, because they aren't dismissive or polarized by personal taste like other reviews can be. Hypes me up more for my new game, so thank you
it's harder than dark souls, and im not sure if thats because of the mechanics being broken, or because the enemies hit like trucks almost from the start of the game. but i like it so far, just got it a few hours ago
Thank you for this review, I have had my eye on this game for a while now and because of this review, I will be purchasing it! I just want to give a shout-out to Gameranx, this is my go-to channel for ANYTHING gaming related. I love the "before you buy" and all the other content on this channel! Thank you guys, you have a permanent subscription from me!
Alex Wagstaff true, didn't play lotf because of the gameplay, didn't enjoy ds3 after playing Nioh, but I enjoy the gameplay of the surge. Playing on pc tho, don't know how good it feels on ps4/Xbox tho.
I picked it up yesterday afternoon. I have to tell you I sucked at dark souls and it would seem not just dark souls but anything dark souls related... in 3 hour's of play I died around 13 Times. I really like the progression state of the game and will continue to die to the end of this game till I finish it. I give it a 9.5/10
The only thing I think surge lacks is much enemy variety, it starts with the zombies and the drones, it evolves into other machines and other enemies who have the same movesets like you, but it kinda stops there. That is my only problem, the plot is actually pretty good but because it's hidden, like any other souls game, you have to dig to find it. And since you guys from gameranx had to throw the review as soon as you can, I can see why you find it shallow. Sorry but for me that's a problem in this review. The bosses, while they are few, they are extremely atmospheric, and for every boss killed you get their weapon, but if you kill them in a specific way (which is actually the hard way to kill them), you get a version 2.0 of the weapon you're promised, which is a way better reward. About the leveling up, you invest your scrap in making gear or maximizing you power core, which is the main stuff that let's you use better implants (the implants are basically you maximizing health, stamina, energy, other nice superpowers), and these implants are your main level up system, your health is always 100 points, but there are implants which you can use to have more health, but if you find in your path an implant you think is better, you can always change it in its place (which means you can balance the game yourself if you think you're too overpowered, or try as many builds as you want). Beside the lack of enemy variety, the only other justifiable problem with the game is the vents you can use in the game (the shortcuts), they are too similar and make the game look same-y, people criticize that all areas look the same, but in fact the truth is that all areas have these vents which creates the illusion that you're in the same environment (they're just overused, but they actually make sense in this world). Great game, very polished, very good story (its the great company who wants to make everything good in the world but something goes wrong, who's the guilty, is the guilt justifiable, how did the responsible react to the event, how everyone else is coping with this event, what's the lore with every area and gear and the history of Creo). It's a souls like story telling, so if you want to learn everything, just look in the corners of the buildings.
Hey dude, just wanted wanted to say love the vids man. But with the blocking it's actually alot more useful once you learn what to block versus what you can't. I'm currently lvl 92 and about to finish my first run through.
Good review! Well done. You guys have been more positive towards this game than other reviewers which is cool. I am definitely going to buy this game, I knew this ever since I saw the announcement 2 years ago that Deck 13 were parting ways with City Interactive and developing a Sci-Fi RPG on their own and The Surge definitely looks the business. Now I dont care what anyone else says I LOVED Lords of the Fallen, it wasn't perfect but it was dam fun. And it nailed the correct level of challenge for me, It wasn't too easy, it wasn't too hard. I like a challenge as much as any gamer and I did like Dark Souls 1 and 2 for the atmosphere and intrigue buuuut I gave up on them after while when they stopped being fun. Bloodborne I also loved and was able to finish without suffering a brain anyurism but that feeling of being drained at the end of it was enough to put me off buying Dark Souls 3 or Ni-Oh. So if The Surge builds on the soulsborne combat style in the Sci-fi setting, nails the correct balance of challenge with good breathing room plus tells a cohesive story with an immersive world and subtle environmental story telling then it could be perfect.
It's a really solid game! I haven't beaten it yet (but I've been to all but one location yet), so far, the only real problem is the story/side stories. The limited world assets is also a bit annoying. The main thing, as a huge souls fan, is that this game is actually fun and intriguing! In contrast, lords of the fallen was only fun half the time.
After Lies of P I found the Surge 1 and 2 and oh man these games in my opinion are way underrated. Got both on sale in the PS store recently and I feel like I robbed Sony for once. lol
It's worth mentioning that the tech scrap retrieval timer is partially refreshed with each kill on your way. Also, could we call it the Souls genre? I feel Dark & Demon's Souls really defined the genre to an excellent degree.
Big fan I was waiting for this review to make up my mind so far I like what i see. thanks Gameranx now i just have to figure which version to buy can this game be play on computer with a controller?
Sci fi and horror as in somethings might scare the hell out of you. Like a random mob popping up from a dark area or finding a really strong and terrifying enemy. No supernatural as far as I know.
I Completed the game, no supernatural in it , but the end boss does say some creepy things that most people who completed the game are wondering what it means.....maybe a ''ghost in the shell'' vibe but it is all sci-fi, and a darn good one, NG+ makes the game more fun to play since u can upgrade more than what u could in the first run....
easier than most of them.....if i had to give a rating, it is like a 6 or 7 on hardness, u can GIT GUD (is this what the kids say?) if u play well, level up and know what implants to use, they give u an unfair advantage over everything, imagine playing DARK SOULS but with many status buffs , this is nowhere near as rage inducing as NIOH is to be honest....
There wasn't a word for Souls-like 5 years ago huh? That's pretty fascinating. Now it's pretty well known. Some games widely debated on if they fit into the genre etc. Well, it looks interesting enough, I just have so much going on in this genre I can't decide if it's worth trying to get lost into, I tried The Surge 2 and just couldn't get the hang of it. I still have to finish Elden Ring and Demon's Souls Remake as well as dabbling in Ashen and some non Souls-like games. I'm trying to get convinced here.
I haven't felt the calm rage of losing potential progress in a long time. Honestly not since playing dark souls 1 for the very first time, and this game gives me a lot of the feeling again more so than ds2, 3, or bloodborne. I very much love to hate this game, it makes me so angry at myself for stupid mistakes that I know I'm making but can't help but make. And the combat pace I feel they got just right. It's not quite bloodborne in speed, but faster than ds3, yet still manages to get the clunky feel of ds1, and it just feels right. I'd very much recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of the rage inducing souls like games.
Is there any multiplayer mechanics? the one thing i love the most about Souls series is the fact that you can fight other players and you can really get a sense of your build through PVP.
I played it two days after it came out. Its a really good game. Rocking full Scarab and a ASTir Vibro-Cutter. Health Boost (purples and blues since (fully) Scarab Set increases the Modifiers of HP Boosts) Energy to HP and Finisher Heal 50% Energy Save (stored) Increase Energy amount per hit And one HP Injection. I'm a Walking Tank.
Favourite weapon/armour combo is either Ironmaus, every implant slot filled and then twin rigged. Another good combo is MG gorgon / twin rigged / single rigged / staff or even chrysalis armour, twin rigged and then implants which recover health upon execution which boost your armor set bonus significantly
s'good.

I prefer to call this genre the _Soulsborne_ genre
Epicmonk117 more like, fancy names for dying genre
"Dying genre" my ass! With the release of _Bloodborne_ in 2015 and _Dark Souls 3_ in 2016, more people than ever were exposed to the genre, and people like Deck 13 are capitalizing on it to produce some truly incredible games.
Nightcrawler Well this genre was born from the souls serie so "Soulsborne" sounds pretty fiting to me
Like how FPS's were called Doom clones? Or Metroidvanias and Roguelikes.
Soulslike sounds better
I played Lords of the Fallen. Got a little far into it before dropping it and hated how clunky and slow and terribly designed it was.
With that in mind, I love the Surge.
Two additional points to Gameranx;
there is a timer when you die to get your items back, but the timer increases when you kill enemies, so you can still progress through the game the same way you did before you died instead of having to rush through and get your items.
The only thing you need to know before buying this game:
Dark Souls + Sci-Fi.
Soulsborne boy
And here I am, 2 years after this video has been published and actually AFTER I bought the game on Steam summer sale. And so far after like...6 hours,I can only confirm what's been said in this video. The game is definetely worth getting and it's refreshing in the soulslike genre. Now I just hope I'll be able to finish it before the sequel comes out,'cause yes,if you're interested in the subject: The Surge 2 is going to be released on September 24th
Ps+ game so I can to watch the review. Turned out I already liked the video. Apparently I've been watching these videos for a while.
_"this genre that we don't really have a name for yet"_ @ 5:33
Souls-like is a fine name for the genre if you ask me.
PS Plus brought me here :D
I love how all the areas have some feel to them, the level design is not easy, and it was executed pretty well in The Surge.
As a parent now, 30hrs is long enough for me. Great review.... I mean b4ubuy
I'm 3 years late but why have I not even heard of this game? I felt like I missed out on a lot of stuff
hey man idk if you bought it already but the edition with all dlcs is up for sale at 5.99 on the play station store
Just hard enough to be satisfying and have you rage quit at least once. Unexpected gem
the Devs have come a long way from Lords of the Fallen and I must say that they have improved a lot with this game. This game is fun and addictive! The sci-fi elements and crafting tech adds to the experience. Been waiting for a sci-fi souls like game. Not to mentioned it runs pretty well with my PC with less storage space. Good job, Deck13!
A dark souls style sifi action adventure🤯 And its now on game pass! It's a good day to be a Xbox owner 😁
It was on ps4 2 months earlier 🤡 2 late 2 flex

what i think is one big positive thing: you have to use your brain.
What gear do i need, Learning your enemies...use your drone right and so on. its much fun and very challenging.
Does the combat make you feel like your as free as a bird, or as if you were born in a prison?
in between
I see what you did there
Does a garden bloom overnight?
Thank you guys, you have a permanent subscription from me!
hope the combat isnt as abysmally loose as LOTF.
Nowhere near. It's immensely improved and with very tight controls compared lords
Alex Wagstaff true, didn't play lotf because of the gameplay, didn't enjoy ds3 after playing Nioh, but I enjoy the gameplay of the surge. Playing on pc tho, don't know how good it feels on ps4/Xbox tho.
Yeah im also on pc and as far as these types of action rpg's go the surge easily has the best keyboard controls
Good to know but I'm actually playing it on pc with my ps4 controller, wich also feels pretty nice, it even got the ps4 button overlay.
Way better controls
Best armor in this game is hands down the sunglasses you can find. I adore them.
What is a Surge?
a delicious soft drink from the 1990's.
gameranx I prefer Slurm
a vitamin D
Navon Myhand maybe play the game and find out?
Navon Myhand When you attack enemys, you get a surge of energy that can be used for finishers and tech mods. prob not the reason but I'm guessing.
I picked it up yesterday afternoon. I have to tell you I sucked at dark souls and it would seem not just dark souls but anything dark souls related... in 3 hour's of play I died around 13 Times. I really like the progression state of the game and will continue to die to the end of this game till I finish it. I give it a 9.5/10
Oh Jake, you didn't have to tell us that footage was from PC. We could tell by the beautiful 60 fps
oh yeah because only PC can get 60 fps.....dumbass
557deadpool because PC are the only consistent 60fps
Haha virgin
@Becoming Godsize i dont know if they added it or if it is only on ps4 pro or x but it does have 60fps like nioh
Who came here after we got this on psn
You do know its free on plus next month right?
SHADOMEGA7569 Yh no shit
@@Jacob-nw5oh dont be a dick he was just telling you
Hey dude, just wanted wanted to say love the vids man. But with the blocking it's actually alot more useful once you learn what to block versus what you can't. I'm currently lvl 92 and about to finish my first run through.
No one asked for a timer on the (not) soul recovery.
Durandol have one anyway
So if The Surge builds on the soulsborne combat style in the Sci-fi setting, nails the correct balance of challenge with good breathing room plus tells a cohesive story with an immersive world and subtle environmental story telling then it could be perfect.
man i love surge!
oh wait its the game
Love this channel you guys always make buying games easy for me.
Electronic bonfires?
nope, just shortcuts back to Ops
An LED bonfire would be cool, but it's just a chamber with a medical bay. But hey, at least you can customize the music that plays in that chamber
New genre we don't have a name for yet? What happened to "souls-like?
After Lies of P I found the Surge 1 and 2 and oh man these games in my opinion are way underrated. Got both on sale in the PS store recently and I feel like I robbed Sony for once. lol
No injustice 2 before you buy?
Working on it
Great guy Jake 😍
It's worth mentioning that the tech scrap retrieval timer is partially refreshed with each kill on your way.
Also, could we call it the Souls genre? I feel Dark & Demon's Souls really defined the genre to an excellent degree.
i beat the first boss last night. so far itz alot of fun! i have never been into thr souls games, but this setting makes me want to play more
L33t City Gaming wait till the sisters
L33t City Gaming dont stop there, go pkays dark souls
Big fan I was waiting for this review to make up my mind so far I like what i see. thanks Gameranx now i just have to figure which version to buy can this game be play on computer with a controller?
The map is a pain the ass tho
Man...Very good review man...I feel exactly the same about this game!
from a souls series veteran i give it 9/10 it good but not great...
good but not great is around 6 out of 10 though
a 9/10 means it great tho
But you gave it a 9
Hey Jake, So is this strictly sci-fi or is there a supernatural side to it as well? You mentioned sci-fi horror... just curious
I haven't played much, but it doesn't seem to be all that supernatural. Horror doesn't necessarily mean supernatural.
Rami Merehbi - So Where would you put this on the difficulty scale between Demon Souls, Dark Souls 1-3, Bloodborne, Nioh, Lords of the Fallen, etc.?
easier than most of them.....if i had to give a rating, it is like a 6 or 7 on hardness, u can GIT GUD (is this what the kids say?) if u play well, level up and know what implants to use, they give u an unfair advantage over everything, imagine playing DARK SOULS but with many status buffs , this is nowhere near as rage inducing as NIOH is to be honest....
we got si-fi souls now and anime souls coming out next year what's next modern war warfare souls
Mr-Kal-9000 western souls sounds good
Mr-Kal-9000 anime souls ?
code vein
Kind of, there is immortal unchained...
I'm gonna order some surge off amazon and jam the hell out of this game!
Hey, have a great day.

the one thing i love the most about Souls series is the fact that you can fight other players and you can really get a sense of your build through PVP.
"Don't really have a name for yet." I'm pretty sure they're called souls-like. Dunno if it's 'official' or not but i've seen it thrown around a lot.
