That's actually a very clever way for Bungie to get the monitor to look at you. Think of it this way, they have it as a very basic "kill player on sight" behavior. By giving it a weapon, but one with no projectile, the monitor can look at players. It would require basically no extra work for them to code and provides a simple fix. Clever software engineering, 100%
Feel like just a basic lookat script would be even simpler, but guessing they just yoinked whatever code they'd already developed for turrets to do the same basic thing so they wouldn't have to make any unique code used for only one asset.
@@monody The point is the basic AI targeting stuff is already written so to do that, they would have to reinvent the wheel. Copy Pasta - Code Writing 101. They also probably were going to do a full blown sneak section. It's essentially a camera with a turret, which explains why why they just took it out and left the bare bones of it for atheistic reasons.
Absolutely. Pop some of those Forerunner energy cells on the walls of the monitor's chamber, and on the monitor itself, like a boss fight. But also place all weapons in its line of sight
@@Chuck_Norris_ I'd say this is the case for any game that haven't had any new content for years and have UA-camrs dependant on content from said game. A lot of UA-cam channels actually die with said game the channel is focused on when the game stagnates or loses popularity. That is why it is always important if a UA-camr wants to be successful, they need to branch out and do other kinds of content too. Sticking with a single game that made you popular is also going to be your downfall in the future if you do not branch out. No game lasts forever, no matter how groundbreaking or amazing it is. Either the game loses popularity or the fanbase "grows away" from it over years or decades.
Exactly what I was thinking lol. This reminds me of when Dark Souls UA-camrs find interesting things within the game & lore (like Zullie The Witch & VaatiVidya), and a handful of other creators post pretty much the same videos while they USUALLY give the proper credit to the "finders" of the content.

seeing all this hidden stuff in the older halo games makes you wonder, what other old games have creepy things hidden within them that people haven't found yet
makes me wonder if there was some planned easter egg, or something more to this map than originally intended an it was just cut. imagine if you shot at it, and the monitor decided to vaporize you or something lol
This was really cool to watch! Though, question: would it be possible to make a customs game mode that uses the lethal monitor? Maybe have it be like Duck Hunt, where one person enters into the monitor and has to kill the other infected.
A mode where you can get infected would be enough for me. Come on ODST firefight update 🤞they already got flood but no infecting players and zooming in after respawning to see your ODST snapping his neck being infected
That’s actually quite an idea. But if cold storage is a place to contain the flood forms that the forerunner’s most likely kept around for humanity to study after their reclamation of the mantle as the precursors intended, then wouldn’t that so called monitor actually be hooked to a machine that channels immense energy into the monitor’s beam to cleanse the location of a flood outbreak? Your Duck Hunt Infection idea would then be deemed historic in the sense of Halo lore
Would it be possible for this to be in other maps, or expand the original map? I can think of so many good custom games with this, imagine a cops and robbers type game where this is a camera
Rather ironic when you take into account the map's lore, aside from that though it's probably remnant debugging code to test how animations and such work, it's very cool regardless however and I didn't even notice it there to begin with so that's even cooler.
See now I'm wondering if that was originally planned for a game type where the Monitor would slide back and forth along the ceiling track, targeting players in a "defensive" mode (the players are contaminating the experiment site with their fight) and then half way through the match the Flood break out of containment, and suddenly you're fighting WITH the Monitor to contain the outbreak until the match ends. All the while it's still RvB fighting st the same time. You could choose to fight the rival team and possibly doom everyone, or fight against the Flood and pull a win.
That sounds awesome. I sometimes wonder how bad of graphics I could put up with in a game as long as controls and gameplay were good. Lot of pretty games now but I haven't had fun like I used to in years.
I feel like I saw this video months ago but it was Generalkidd who went through the aspects of the Monitor, including being a vehicle and having a weapon.
I wonder if the security cameras in The Pit function the same way, and that they, like the monitor, are trying to kill you but have a null projectile that prevents them from doing so.
This reminds me of how bungie did Nokris in Destiny 2 season arrivals. During that season there was an activity where the character Nokris would talk to you, and it turns out he was actually there, just way outside the bounds of the map.
This is clearly not a vehicle, but the way the devs got the monitor to look at the player. There is most likely an enemy inside of it, which is operating the monitor as a turret, which makes it turn towards players. This saves a lot of work for the devs, and makes a lot of sense when you think about it.
This reminds me of the Halo 3 multiplayer (and beta) vidoc where Bungie had plans (and were scrapt) to integrate AI turrets on maps like High Ground that help the defending team defend the base from the other team.
Generalkidd already explained this years ago. Plus, i even knew about the monitor looking at you. It was a pain in the ass trying to hide and it just gives you away to the enemies.
Imagine a gamemode where one player is this big monitor and the others are attempting to kill said monitor. The big monitor would have some manner of cannon and the player inside would be tasked with eliminating all of the attacking players, while said attackers look for power-weapons to defeat the monitor. Big fun.
I tried doing this with the spartan laser but I couldn't get it to fire or emit the charging beam. It only makes a red dot. That and it aims above you at all times which is really annoying.
I knew about the vehicle, but not the weapon or its intent. You're right. That already creepy map just shot up 30 creep points. I always wondered if there was a secret way to break the glass and this unending horde of flood just pours in killing everyone. The thought it could happen scared me
I would love to see some mod that kills you upon contact with the light and play a game of flashlight tag essentially with that thing with some objective underneath.
Would it be possible to mod some sort of terminal in the map so players can control and use the monitor eye? The spot would be obvious and using it would be a risk, as you’d have no idea if someone’s going to kill you, but the trade off is you have a 1shot beam to quarantine a whole slot of the map.
I wish they could've made it slide along that rail track in the ceiling. It seems like that was intended. With it being a vehicle and all, do you think you could look into enabling or jury rigging that to work?
When I swap the projectile it is shooting from above the monitors eye, and missing every shot. How did you mod it to shoot from the correct place? Edit: Solved! In the [vehi] for the monitor, there's a "weapons" section with a single "weapon" under it. Change that [weap] to any other weapon and it'll aim correctly, it looks like it's just the monitor defender's weapon that sucks.
creepy fact: all forerunner monitors are partly ancient humans soul and body. Initially they remember their past life but over time their new processor and inorganic body make them lose their memories of their past life.
The reason it fires a blank weapon at the player is because there is an AI in the vehicle, and by giving it a weapon, it can simply be given full awareness of PCs in the environment, and told to 'shoot' them. Creating a cheap method for the monitor to track the player. 2/10, want my time back.
Ohhh, daaaaaaaaamn do I miss the HELL outta Halo 3! This really seems like a cut feature that they didn't have the time to fully develop or implement. I'd really love to hear the original idea behind this.
My guess, is that bungie gave this monitor a projectile-less weapon because the ai won't target or follow anything unless it's shooting something at someone.
I am willing to bet money that the entire reason it is a vehicle with a weapon, rather than its own type of entity, is simply so it can look (aim) at players without the devs having to make unique animations or write new code.
