This is the first episode in our BizJams series where we cover the business side of Video & Photography. Anyone have topics they'd like us to cover in a future video?
I'm sorry, I wasn't clear about my question. In one of the lists, I noticed that the quote mentioned a quantity of 5 for Pre-production. Could you provide more details about what is included in those 5 units of Pre-production? Thank you! @@FilmJams
@@HakimFilmmaker Sure! Here's the link: www.patreon.com/filmjams - I think the bottom tier is like $2 bucks per month, and you can all our downloads and stuff. Pretty useful I think!
I use Proposify for big quote proposals, but I like your quickbooks method for smaller jobs. I've always thought that itemizing leads to customer nickel and diming, but you bring up some good points about it. Thanks brotha!
Tim Danyo hey Tim! Thanks for watching. Yeah I think itemizing can work out to your advantage in a lot of circumstances. I need to check out Proposify more. Thanks for mentioning that!
I am a little confused with the process. Do you send them a quote and have them sign it .Then send them a contract too? Or do you just leave it to the quote with the disclaimers.
Carlos J Escobar well hopefully I can help clarify that a bit for ya. It depends on the size and scope of project. If it’s only equipment rental, I also have a rental agreement that people are required to sign. That comes after the estimate/quote. The quote is always the first step for me. Once they sign that we have a written agreement. On larger projects I’ll also have a separate statement of work that I’ll send after the quote / for example on a multi video project over the course of a year. But 90% of the time for one off jobs, (unless it’s rental only) I just use the quote/estimate as my contract.
It definitely can be, and most times for small to mid-size jobs I use it as my contract. If I'm doing a larger project I normally draw up a more detailed statement of work separate from the quote.
Thanks Jan! Haha it took me a while to do it. But always seems to work out better when clients are comparing other quotes - and sets you up for a follow up question..."If the other company is charging less, what equipment are they bringing" - and that's when they often see that the quotes aren't apples to apples :)
Hmm it’s been a while since I set my estimates up in QuickBooks but there’s definitely a setting you can add it on there. It may not be the default. But I always recommend getting a signature so you have a signed contract.
@@FilmJams Is it okay if a signature is not on the estimate, If it’s just for them to look at the cost? Then if they decide to move forward, I send them a full scope of work agreement that includes the payment terms? It’s for a 6-month contract, and they’re wanting to see what the cost of the monthly service would be.
@@dezzyjones Oh yes for sure....if it's just to view cost and you send the contract with signature later...I always recommend getting a signature before starting any work tho. Good luck!
I'm thinking that we send Little Georgie to pay a visit to that client from years ago that cost you the 10 grand.... and be sure he takes a pencil phone Z with him !!!!!!!!

I would love to know more about systems and processes! .... What is a Day in the 'business' life?
THNDR Studios thanks for replying! That’s a good topic. Any specific processes you’d want to see?

Sounds good! We can definitely do something like that.
Very insightful video! I'm starting my own production house and this helps a lot. What is the quantity in Pre-Production?
Glad it was helpful! Good luck with your company. What do you mean about the quantity?

@@kaesarrurienobed2584sure no problem! That’s just how many hours. So 5 hours. But you can bill in days or however works best for the project.

so is the quote basically the same as a contract?

Quickbooks doesnt let you format your estimate so that they sign it. It goes straight to requesting payment. Is that okay?

Awesome. Let it be known, I want a Film Jams shirt.
Anthony Brock we can make that happen! X-small?
What does unit mean?
On the quote? Can mean hours or days or whatever unit of measurement you’re billing for.
@@FilmJams Okay, so if the shooting will take up to 5 days, Wht do I write ? 5D
