I was a second shooter/reflector holder helping with head shots for recently elected county officials and had good time. The bonus is that most of the equipment was mine. I'd like to get into doing even more head shots. Your videos are very helpful.
FIRST!! Also, my rate started out at exactly that, $50 for photo. I'm now making around $325-$500. You have to be careful though about the variations because the lighting mood and them changes for each backdrop color. I've had a lot of colleagues edit themselves right out of work, which those clients have come to me. The sad part is that I have warned people and told them over and over what would happen. But arrogance gets people no where. Again, keep people aware about this. DON'T LIGHT THE SAME WAY! Every backdrop means a different type of lighting based on the tone, the company, the purpose, and the skin type. Its all about how the light reflects and wraps.
Great point!! Thanks for commenting this, totally agree with you! And congrats on that pricing, that’s great! What other things do you offer that Kaye I didn’t mention? Thanks for watching!

any tips of maybe a video on how to remove background from to create transparency shots? Sometimes my paper rolls have gradients from different light casts, not sure if it would all checkerboard out....just currious. thanks.
Yeah normally I just use the “select subject” feature in PS now and adjust from there. If I know in advance I have to make a transparent version, I just try to make sure they are visible separated from the background with depth and lighting for that reason. Thanks for watching!
When you have a large headshot session, how many photos are you taking per person and do you chose the best one or are you having them pick their favorite one? Thanks for all the info!
Hey Thomas! The easiest method is showing them the previews on camera right after we take them and have them pick their top favorite or top 3 and I’ll pick the final one if it’s for 1 headshot. You could also send the raw previews and have them pick their favorite after, just might be a headache to do that with a lot of headshots. Thanks for watching!

Do you charge $150 for each headshot when doing a large group - like 47 - or do you reduce it and offer volume discount and would would you drop it to?
Yep! For smaller groupings like real estate teams, I’ll reduce the cost to maybe $125 or $100 / headshot maybe. But bigger companies with bigger marketing budgets don’t have an issue to do $150 x 47, I’ve done it quite a few times with a medical company in my area!
Thanks! Ya, it’s happened before. Usually I try and add on more to the shoot so it’s worth it! Like a lifestyle shoot or a video for them. Once pricing gets up higher, then it becomes worth it. Plus usually they’ll come back for more work after that. Thanks for watching!

if you get a client who's asking for 2 7 hour work days with no specific headshot count. They want a minimum of 12 headshots to a max of 50 headshots per day. How would you go about pricing it? They are doing an exhibit at a conference and that's their estimated headshots per day. They want to shoot for 2 days. Should i charge per hour instead of per headshots in that case?
Hey! I think you’re right. Best to come up with a price point that covers your time, not based on how many headshots. Just make sure your satisfied with your price point if you had to shoot the max headshots each day. Thanks for watching!
Hey Armando! Great question, I typically shoot on location - like a listing they have, model home, or office setting. I can bring a pop up paper backdrop if they want the traditional look too. Hey! Just depends on what their needs are. Some need a transparent version usually, or some are fine with one. Just get all the info ahead of time and charge accordingly! Thanks for watching
Hey Richard! Per photo pretty much. Like in a recent shoot, they wanted 2-3 different team photo variations and a quick social media video so I based the pricing off of that! But typically I would say per session or photo for big grouping shots. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for putting this together. I do have a question when it comes to one photo. Do you send the client a few water marked photo to choose from then touch up... Or?
Hey! Great question - If I'm shooting multiple headshots, I try and get them to select their favorite photo at the shoot to make it easier. Otherwise, I'll send them low res, water marked versions, with basic color adjustments, for them to choose the final image to full edit and retouch. Thanks for watching!
Or better yet, photograph them on a green screen, chromachrome green. That way there is no limit as to what background you can put back there. Just make sure they are at least 3 to 3/12 ft minimum from the green backdrop and do not light the backdrop separately, to keep from green spill on their heads and such.
Hey Charles! Interesting! I haven’t done much green screen work, definitely could be a good idea to do that if you definitely intend to change the background for sure!
I'd never use green screen. Not for business. Just use white or gray. It drops out just as easily and you will never have that green screen spill in the hair since the white and gray are neutral. And white and gray are usually what they want most times anyway.

Correct! Either they pick their favorite headshot on the spot, or I email them previews for them to select, and then fully process them and deliver. I keep it simple and deliver most of our content through DropBox. That way all their future work is all in one place. Hi, what software or app can I use for letting parents (school portraits) download the pictures, paying and give the options for printable pictures in different sizes?
Hey! Hmm, good question. I use SmugMug for delivering portrait galleries and they can download the photos, order different prints, and a few other perks. Only thing it can’t do is collect payment or invoice. For the longest time I just used PayPal for invoicing but now I use Stripe and it works great.
Correct! I’ll definitely come home with 10-25 or so per client, but have them either pick their favorite on location, or send previews. If I’m shooting say, 30-40 headshots for a company, I’ll spend 5 min or so with each person and have them choose they’re favorite right there by rating it in camera to make the process a lot smoother. Thanks for watching!
Hey! Great question. The flash coming directly from an on-camera flash is very harsh. If you shoot it directly at your subject, it will look very unflattering. You use a softbox or umbrella, to diffuse the light so when it hits your subject, it’s soft and diffused, making it flattering on them! The more diffusion a softbox has, the softer and nicer the light, no one wants harsh light for headshots or any type of portraits really. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching !
@@AndreiRestrepo it does help, so it’s better to invest in a flash umbrella than a mount flash? I need it for church work/weddings/gym shots etc…and I am undecided.
The umbrellas or softboxes don’t come with a flash, you take a regular mount flash and insert it into any of those attachments. Personally I’d go with a soft box, best results when doing off camera flash photography. For weddings, you can just bounce the flash without anything off the ceiling or a wall too
Your clients don't know your level of experience and typically don't know a decent headshot from a great one. So charge what a seasoned professional charges period.

Why do you need a flash umbrella instead of a regular flash mounted on your camera?
For weddings, you can just bounce the flash without anything off the ceiling or a wall too
@@AndreiRestrepo thank you
Your clients don't know your level of experience and typically don't know a decent headshot from a great one. So charge what a seasoned professional charges period.
I’d say most do, at least for me and my business. I’ve had other clients come to me because they got a headshot done somewhere else and it was bad, and a day and night difference with the results. I just always say charge what you and your work is worth. Thanks for watching!
This is awesome! One of the few videos that has actual numbers instead of "just do this" lol smh .
Hey man! Awesome, glad to hear it! I agree, too many of those out there. Trying to be as helpful as I can!
Please make an editing video

@@AndreiRestrepo Thanks Andrei. Looking forward to working with you.
Interesting you use a beauty dish, not the softest light I think the word beauty dish is one of the biggest misnomers in Photography people think that it’s going bring out beauty, quite the contrary, usually exposes every flaw in a persons face
But it seems to work for you so keep running with it
Hey! Thanks, yeah I’ve just used softboxes like this for the longest time, especially for video. And essentially these beauty dishes are slightly softer too, especially the bigger ones. What do you use? Thanks for watching!
i m sorry. I skipped ahead so maybe you addressed this, but the example you show, that's not a head shot. that's a portrait. different can of fish
1000 $ for an image??! Rip off.
No? Where did I say that? Around $150 per image, shooting multiple headshots at once, to make a few thousand from a shoot.
Those edits… yikes
Thanks for the feedback, and for watching anyway !
