    Thanlk you for clarifying at the end the difference between the two folding methods; A - folding to a specific place along the center and B - at as 90 drew angle. It was interesting to see the visual difference between the two.

    Thank you for the tutorial and heart pattern. I was introduced to book folding, just yesterday, by my neighbor and have fallen in love with the art. I am working on a butterfly but will make your “heart” fold very soon. Thank you again.

    Thank you for showing what to do if you couldn't get that 90 degree angle as I've just finished the word sister and came across a lot of folds like that, I got round it in a different way but seeing how you do it is a lot easier 😊 plus finding the page where to start your pattern from was great 👍🏻 I'm onto my second book fold now and I also have the heart pattern and cannot wait to do that one. It's so relaxing and I have always wanted to try it but I could only see the ones where you used a printed out lined pattern and it all seemed too complicated to me but after watching your videos I know feel that I can do different methods of book folding and I can always come back to your videos if I forget how to do something 😊 look forward to watching more and thanks again for taking the time to show us how to do this beautiful art. Yours are by far the easiest videos I've seen to learn from 😊

    I completed this heart folded book. How can I make it open like yours does? Yours looks so thick and full and appears to be attached somehow to the extra pages or the cover. Also, on some of your designs, you show how to fold back the extra pages so they don’t show and then you glue on some decorative paper inside the cover.

      +1376jimbo
      Hi,
      The ruler is a 30cm acrylic craft ruler which I adapted by screwing on a plastic strip. The plastic strip is a plant label, the type you put in the soil. I did try gluing it initially but it kept coming off hence the screws. It is a great little tool now. If you can adapt one, or get someone to do it for you, it makes measuring so much quicker.

    Thank you for this tutorial! I do have a question... I see that you fold from the same side of the book every time. Would there ever be a case where you would fold from the other side from the middle of the pattern to the end? (get half way, then start folding the pages "to the right"). Or does it not matter to the design?

    • @SVGMaria
      @SVGMaria  9 років тому

      +Dollarshowman Hi, apologies for not replying sooner, I have been away. Yes you can start from the middle and work outwards from there. I've always started at the front as I design the pattern as I go.

    Thank You for such simplified explanation....
    Would you please let me know whether it is possible to do this in a soft bound book..?
    What will be the difference in appearance?
    How much time it will take to complete full activity for a beginner?

    • @SVGMaria
      @SVGMaria  9 років тому

      +Ashish Majithiya
      Hi Ashish,
      Yes you can do the pattern with a soft bound book and its a great way to practice. It will look similar but may not stand up by itself as the cover probably won't be strong enough.
      It's difficult for me to say how long it will take a beginner as everyone is different and you will speed up as you work through the pattern too. An estimate would be 2-3 hours.

    Hello I am new to this craft and find your videos awesome and so clear and good. I just have one question: what is an 'innie' and what is an 'outie'? I have seen these 2 descriptions for folding alot on various links and I am baffled!

  • @stevemartin1766
    @stevemartin1766 7 років тому

    Thank you Maria for this set of lessons, they are very concise and easy to follow and I can't wait to get started. There is just one point that I need to ask about - in this last lesson you have described the methods of folding and also how to deal with a fold that cannot be achieved as a 90 degree one. I can follow the clear instructions but can see the angle of the fold does not match the rest of the folds, is this detrimental to the pattern?. Does this type of fold work with all patterns? I hope my questions are as easy to understand as your videos lol

    • @SVGMaria
      @SVGMaria  7 років тому

      Hi Barbara, Apologies for not replying sooner. Great question and yes, I understand, I hope :) As long as you're getting as tight to the mark as possible the fold you create will be hidden as it's more acute than 90 degrees. It shouldn't adversely affect the pattern. In my experience it works with all patterns. I hope that helps. Maria x

    Hi, Maria. I've just watched all 7 stages of how to fold a book. It looks easy & I've nearly finished the heart that you so eloquently taught. Thanks. I think I'm going to be hooked. I've already downloaded a few patterns that I want to try, but I'm a little confused with one of the patterns, it says on the front (including 3cm margin top & bottom), what exactly does this mean? Does it mean that I should start measuring from 3cms from the top, so 5.6 would become 8.6? then where does the 3cms at the bottom come into it??
    Thanks again. Angela x

    • @SVGMaria
      @SVGMaria  7 років тому

      Hi Angela, The 'margin' is the area at the top and bottom which is not fold. You don't need to make any adjustments. Maria x

    Your lessons are great, thanks for posting them! I have a question about a pattern I have that says a minimum book height of 20 cm and the book I have is 23.5 cm - do I have to do anything to adjust for this? OR do I just measure each measurement from the top of the page? TY!

    • @SVGMaria
      @SVGMaria  6 років тому

      You can adjust it if you want but you don't have to. It'll just have a gap at the bottom. If you want it vertically centered then add 1.5 cm to each measurement.

    Hi, thank you for these tutorials. I've tried in two different books but each time I'm trying to fold I seem to be ripping the page at the fold mark. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

    • @SVGMaria
      @SVGMaria  8 років тому

      Hi Robert, thank you for your message. I used to do this quite a lot at the start and it does still occaisionally happen but I think it's something that improves with practice to a certain extent. Quality of paper does have its part to play for sure but rather than folding directly from the mark try rolling the sheet up to the mark then folding it. It takes a bit of practice to know when you're at the right point to start folding down, it will be different for different qualities of paper, but take it slowly at first and you'll soon find the right place. I hope that helps. Maria x

    Hi Maria. I'm about to do my first book fold, a simple heart. Can you tell me how to know where my top and bottom marks go in order to fold to get the rounded effect? I don't know what this method is called but it's not the 90 degree folding method. Hope that makes sense.

    Do you tear out the extra pages before you start folding as well as the last pages after you complete folding? Or do you leave them in?

    • @SVGMaria
      @SVGMaria  8 років тому

      Hi Jackie,
      Thank you for your message. It depends on the pattern, how many spare pages you have and personal preference. Some patterns look better with unfolded pages at the front and back so it would be ok to leave them. If you have lots of spare pages then to remove them might make the book unstable so, if you don't want to leave them in, it might be better to choose another book with fewer pages. I hope that helps. Maria x

    Thanks. Very helptful. I took a class where we learned to start in the middle. Do you ever do it that way?

    • @SVGMaria
      @SVGMaria  7 років тому

      I've never started in the middle. I should try it sometime. Do you find it's a better method? Maria x

    • @OlderisBetter51
      @OlderisBetter51 7 років тому

      I can't say if it's easier since I have only done this method once because I am just a beginner. Our teacher thought it easier to find the center page that way this way, instead of trying to find the middle as most instructions show.. I did make the mistake in class of turning the book around by accident and had the bottom at the top. At the time I didn't know what I did wrong but now it's very obvious what I did. Any videos are so helpful and tips on folding as well., Book folding doesn't seem to have become popular in my area yet, so I'm excited. Especially fun to search for books at thrift shops with titles to go along with the design,

      One of the great things about book folding is that it is very versatile. There are many methods and you can pick and choose which one you like best and create amazing results that certainly have that wow factor. x

      Also when I started in the middle, it was awkward after finishing the middle to the end to then go back to the middle and go towards the front.

    Hi maria....I can't figure out how the points on the top and bottom edge of the page are marked!!Can you please explain it in detail??

    • @SVGMaria
      @SVGMaria  6 років тому

      You can measure them with a ruler from the outside edge of the page and mark with a pencil. I hope that helps.

    what if I have a thicker book than the tutorial suggests??

    • @SVGMaria
      @SVGMaria  7 років тому

      When you work out your starting as in Lesson 5 this will give you the same amount of 'spare' pages at the front and the back. You can tear them out if there's not too many, fold them back or leave them unfolded.

    • @SVGMaria
      @SVGMaria  8 років тому

      Hi Paola, The ruler is a standard perspex craft ruler which I have attached a piece of plastic to on the end. It works very well but I now use an incra rule, expensive but fabulous. Maria x
