    Crabs use their claws for attracting mates, male crabs will size up their claws to one and another to judge if they want to fight over territory or not, etc.. crabs have mouths with sharp beak like pincers that act like a pair of scissors. Rotting fish is super mushy and easy for them to eat, like putting your hands behind your back and eating a bowl of mash potatoes. Crabs also have a quick release on their claws to protect themselves from predators as well, sometimes a crab will drop its claw in front of the predator to distract it as it slips away. I really wish people did basic research before you flood UA-cam videos with idiotic comments... I thought basic marine biology was taught in most high schools.

You better believe the 100's of thousands of commercial pots in the water the commercial guys take both claws. The state of Florida which regulates the fishery says taking both claws is legal. If the population was in decline the would change the laws but thats not the case. Stone crab harvest numbers have stayed to same for many many many years. From FWC website. You can take both, they do turn more scavenger vs predator, BUT...
    “Although the crab can still obtain minimal amounts of food with no claws, having one claw (if the other one is harvested) will enable the crab to obtain greater amounts of food in a shorter amount of time. Stone crabs (like other crustaceans) have the ability to grow back their claws, but this process requires a large amount of energy in the form of food.
    The quicker the crab can obtain the energy required to molt and grow its lost claw, the sooner this renewable delicacy will have another claw to replace the missing one”
    I guess you be your own judge.

      The state of Florida says its legal to take both claws. If taking both claws caused the population would be declining which it isn't. There are 100's of thousands of commercial stone crab traps in Florida and you better believe they take both claws. The season is only open for just over half a year and the claws grow back in one year to be harvested again. One of the most stustainable fisheries there is as the crab isn't killed. The crabs don't use their large claws to eat.The crab will release the claw when you put pressure on it in the right direction or use the knife trick. It doesn't hurt the crab. If the population was in decline the would change the laws but thats not the case. Stone crab harvest numbers have stayed the same for many many many years. Some year are better than others just like any other fishery. They don't use their large claws to eat with. A large to jumbo claw can't even get close to the crabs mouth.

    How long does it take for them to grow new claws, and if they don’t have claws how would they catch there food

    • @StanzFam
      @StanzFam  4 роки тому

      2-3 years to grow to legal size. They go into full scavenger mode supposedly with no claws. These crabs are in scavenger mode already though because they are crawling into traps and eating dead fish off the bottom, not necessarily hunting with their claws for live fish
