  • A long weekend to the North West of Scotland meant we had to try and get a dive in. We had never dived the area before but after careful consideration we decided on a location we thought would be good for scallops. What we found was out of control. We've never seen so many scallops! Cooking them up on a wood fired BBQ in the shadow of Ben Nevis - perfect.

Well... There are videos on yt about great whites off the west coast but no definite sightings. I suspect they are here after all the water is warmer here than it is in South Africa which is famous for great whites due to the seal colonies. We have about 40000 seals on the west coast so there is plenty of food for them.

I am even more impressed that she not only did it without a weight belt, but she is a female. And that is not me being sexiest any female diver can tell you that we have more fat on our bodies than men and it's harder for us to get down. Even though I am smaller I usually have more weight than the men I dive with. She has some leg power to kick herself down like that. Also a trick, oil up your grill and the outside of the fish and your fish won't stick like that.

Try wrapping the fish in tin foil before placing it on the grill. That way it won't fall apart.

Try scallops raw. The best sea food I ever put into my mouth was the day I chose to eat one prior to cooking it. Better then lobster!

Closest I've had to that was after marinating in lemon juice for a day.......
Just think how much was eaten by us in the same way we'd watched various animals eat their prey. I mean...... what ever possessed anyone (other than starvation) to open an oyster shell and be immediately compelled to gobble that down?
Living on Chesapeake Bay in my few+a couple decades, I don't recall eating "bay scallops" that were authentically scallops...... I've stood in Cape Charles marsh mud eating oysters and clams seconds after catching them (that's fresh as it gets), and I recall houses with signs advertising scallops, but never checked them out...... bay scallops are allegedly wings of skates and rays punched out with a cookie-cutter type device. This video is pretty provocative in terms of wishing I could go there for the real thing. Scallop and shrimp scampi's a favorite.

Enjoyed the video and as a Scot, I seriously miss the place. One small criticism, I don't recall you talking about scallop size, and I think some of the ones you collected looked a bit on the small side. When we dive in Northern Ireland we only pick the ones about the size of the larger part of the palm of your hand. Keep up the good work.
