In this episode of Vox Almanac, producer Phil Edwards explores the past and present of the DeLorean Motor Company, which made the infamous DMC-12. Though many today know the car through the movie Back to the Future, DeLorean has its own incredible story to tell (and one that’s almost harder to believe than a story about time travel).
John Z. DeLorean is at its center as the founder and namesake of the company. His path through the upper echelon of General Motors seemed to have set him on course for that company’s Presidency - but he dreamed of starting his own company. The result was the DeLorean Motor Company, which was established in America and eventually planted a factory in Dunmurry, Ireland, near Belfast and during the sectarian civil war known as “the Troubles.”
For this video, we interviewed Barrie Wills about his experience working at the company - but we also talked to DeLorean owners about the ways the car has endured, thanks to the movie Back to the Future, and, more importantly, their own ingenuity and creativity. A DeLorean community has kept the car going and, despite the fact that production ended in the early '80s, the car continues to inspire new fans even today.

When I was a kid in the 80s I saw a DeLorean at a grocery store in, of all places, Provo, Utah. I was probably just 12 but I forced my mom to pull over and did a thing that was totally against my nature, I went up to the woman driving it and asked if I could look inside. She was very friendly and let me sit in the passenger seat. It was spellbinding. The amazing doors, the stainless steel body, the way it felt as you were sitting just inches above the pavement.
I later discovered that she was married to one of the wealthiest guys in town. Over the years I spotted a few of the other vehicles from his collection in various exotic car magazines (I was obsessed with sports cars as a kid). On rare occasions I'd see him around town in one of his Lamborghinis (an Orange Mira or a Yellow Countach). It's hard to explain what a rare thrill it was back then to see those mythical cars in podunk Utah.
But, man, that DeLorean encounter was was a real treat. To a 12-year-old kid from a lower-middle-class family it literally felt like seeing a real unicorn in a grocery store parking lot.
Thanks for giving us a history lesson on such a cool car!

This is the truest joy of owning a DMC. In 2015 I brought it to an autistic child's BTTF themed birthday party. His mom says it was one of the rare times in her child's life that he settled down and seemed at peace. I drove him around the block and I almost cried from the vicarious joy he was experiencing.
The car is just a thing, the joy it brings to children young and old is real.

'Provo' was slang for a member of the Provisional IRA, one of the groups involved in "The Troubles", it's oddly fitting and/or weird that you would see a Belfast-built car in a place called Provo...

You should have seen the parking lot of the LMC back then. There were dozens of DMC 12s sitting there at one time. John Delorean owned both companies and the lettering was similar for both companies in the logos.
LMC stands for Logan Manufacturing Company.
Also the real writer of Back to the Future was born in Logan Utah.
In the movie: DMC, Clock Tower, Bluebird Motel and Twin Pines Mall
In Logan Utah: LMC, Clock Tower Plaza, Bluebird Restaurant and Twin Pines Condos
Three of those places were found on main street and were A few miles apart. LMC no longer exists and the land it once sat on is A field now.
The yellow posters in Marty's school refer to the mascots of the North Cache Bulldogs and Preston Indians.
Preston and Logan are the two largest cities in Cache Valley and also Bill and Ted's last names.
The ghostwriter was very prolific and wrote books, TV shows, movies, comics, videogame concepts, songs and movie scores.
The third book in Harry Potter says "back into the future". Lightning is used in BTTF and HP. Both main characters have brown hair. Both have flying cars.
Ken stage in Street Fighter and A credits song in Top Gun sound similar.
      Pac-Man in the movie Tron.
Zelda music in Mario 3 when you blow the warp whistle.
In the James Franco Wizard of Oz movie listen for A few notes of the BTTF theme.
He also designed buildings, vehicles, set pieces for his movies and the real world.
It is not A coincidence that VTEC, Vortec, Voltec, Duratec, Ecotec and Ecoboost are similar names.
Ford, GM and others are dropping production and vehicles because of his retirement.
A handful of mansions were designed by him as well as City Creek. His dad did the materials paperwork in the building of City Creek.
Hill Airforce Base was the first to receive the new F-35s.
He designed the Predator, M.O.A.B., F-35, F-22 and some others.

I bought one last September and it's my daily driver now. I kept my other car-- a Fiesta ST, which I now refer to as "the SUV." Work is about 22 miles from home, and when I see the DeLorean in the garage in the morning... I mean, you just get used to driving something that causes joy for those within it and everyone who sees it. And you don't want to drive something else. And you should see it in person. It looks so much better in person. It's so wide and so low
    FUN FACTS--
The roof is the height of my belly button. The car is low! (I'm 6'-1" and I fit fine)
It's super aerodynamic. Take your foot off the gas and it just keeps going like an air hockey puck.
You never get tired of the doors. Neither does anyone else. Especially the kids at the McDonald's drive-thru.
Many owners don't use water to wash the car. They usually use some kind of spray or wipe you use on appliances. Some even use Windex.
The manual transmission makes it fast off the line. Really.
More than 28 MPG cruising on the highway, on Regular fuel. Aerodynamic, like I said.
I've floored it at 90 MPH and it still pulls away strong. Friends tell me that it goes over 130 MPH. That's nice for them. I won't do that.
Everybody has to touch the stainless. Even after telling them it's like their fridge or their sink, they just gotta touch it.
I've never let anyone drive it. I've yet to be confronted with a valet who insists. It'll depend on my mood that day, I think.
You can drive with the doors open. It's not a great idea, but you can. I know someone who went 100 MPH with the doors open. I won't do that, either.

You must live in the US if 28MPG on the highway is considered good. That's pitiful. I get 94MPG when I set the cruise control.. mind you, it's only a little 150bhp Diesel car, but for daily driving it's great. Saved fuel on weekdays just means more fuel on the weekend for my not-so-economical cars.

As a kid in 8th grade (1960) I dreamed of becoming a car designer, and participated in GM's future car design contests where you had to design and build experimental scale wood models. They always looked so futuristic, yet do distant compared to current cars being sold. When the DeLorean came out it was like the future had finally arrived.

We have Kolin Brown who rally's his car and another owner with over 100,000 miles as his daily driver. I'm the youngest owner at 22 in our club thats for sure. There's one thing I read about the DeLorean that wasn't mentioned in this vid: that if and when the hydaulics in the doors gave out, you'd need a body builder to lift the doors. Stainless steel is heavy.

So cool to see how passionate these fans are. One curious thing is that the DeLorean always seemed to me as a futurist version of the old VW Gol (nicknamed Square Goal in Brazil) and later I found out some people experiment to use the VW Gol to make custom DeLoreans in Brazil, since the import costs and the process would be ridiculously high and complicated. There are also people who make custom replicas using the VW Scirocco in other countries.

That's funny because if I remember right, the DeLorean in BTTF Part III was actually made by putting the DeLorean body on a VW chassis to get it to sit high enough to ride on those big 50's whitewall tires. I think there's a video here on UA-cam on the AficionAuto channel with the guy who actually owns it now. It's pretty wild.

*From Wikipedia:* "By 1969, DeLorean earned an annual salary of US$200,000 (equivalent to US$1,366,425 in 2018), with yearly bonuses of up to US$400,000 (equivalent to US$2,732,849 in 2018). He had made sizable investments in the San Diego Chargers and the New York Yankees sports teams, and was becoming ever more ubiquitous in popular culture. At a time when business executives were typically conservative, low-key individuals in three-piece suits, DeLorean wore long sideburns and unbuttoned shirts. He also horrified fellow GM executives by inviting Ford president Lee Iacocca to serve as best man at his second wedding."

When I was little and the DeLorean came out I remember people thinking it was sort of cool looking but it had a rep as an underpowered dog with reliability issues, and when DeLorean got busted and the company broke up everyone figured it would soon be forgotten about as another weird failed startup. Then one movie comes out and suddenly the car is immortal. And in recent years as the 80s retro vibe has ramped up the DeLorean has become an even bigger icon than it ever was in its own day. Amazing to see how history and pop culture work in realtime like that.

I don’t think you realize how big of a deal the car was before the movie came out. That’s why it was cast in the movie. People always want to point to one reason for things, and it’s usually the reason they heard first. My guess is you were born after 1980 and saw the movie first. But it is possible to be famous for two things, and it would be famous for either the movie or just being itself. It happens to be famous for both.

in 1988 I was 16 and looking for a car. One was on the used car lot next to a 1979 5.0 Mustang. The Mustang was $1800 the Deloean was $2800. I test drove both. I bought the Mustang.
