My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much.

FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? Over five years now, holy cow.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGear...
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off UA-cam? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $5/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jays...
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. So instead people often drop off or ship things to the Peloton Cafe in Paris for me.
Thanks for watching!
I spent a month in Paris during the height of the Great Recession. As a professor, I had a large, readymade circle of friends--mostly young. Consequently, there were many 'picnics.' But the French have a different idea about 'picnics.' I once said I really love these picnics. "This is not a piquenique. This is just public drunkenness."
The look on the guys face between 1:09-1:21 is amazing!!!
Jardin du Ranelagh is also a great spot. Plenty of green space, clean, 3 public bathrooms, kids playgrounds, poneys and a view of the Eiffel tower.
good to see you with your father and cooper, out and about , like the old shows that i use to love.
Nice to see you spending time with your dad again...❤
Just had a picnic in Paris at Luxembourg Gardens, so much fun.
Jay: ‘My life is just one big existential crisis.”
Sartre: (smiles)
“Everything is born without reason, prolongs itself out of fear, and dies by chance”
Love Buttes Chaumont..had my first lunch there with a quiche I got from the boulangerie next to the metro. Then had a picnic last week in Jardin de Luxembourg. 2 of my favorite spots in Paris for a picnic.,
Ahhh isn’t Paris just a fabulous city! It’s just made for outdoor eating! Really good guide Jay! Cheers! 🙏
Oh man, the boomer looking at you coming out of Carrefor was friggen hilarious...
Hello from Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪. great video Jay.Really enjoyed it
Thank you!
Yes! Bike tours were the best!!! Okay, now I need to come back!
Jardin des Plantes, pour moi c’est le meilleur spot !
Looking good Jay! Glad your still posting on UA-cam 🙏🏼
I love the jacket!
Thanks!
I had a lovely picnic along the Seine with my daughter at sunset…❤
Sounds great!
@@JaySwanson we didn’t have a blanket either but it didn’t matter. We grabbed a few wonderful pastries, shared a sandwich and toasted the sunset with champagne. Magical!
Thank you for your fantastic video. Relatable. Good info.
Yes! Jay! And I love Paris...so it is fun to see and reminisce and dream about the next time...
Glad your dad is back in town for a visit. And yes please a place to find when and where the farmers markets are on would be greatly appreciated in the new PDF/app.
I loved seeing the view of your legs over the border and the angle of the border to the water. I thought it was different and glad to see it is something I might try. Who am I kidding! My spot is that concrete bench or curb behind you. And your Dad’s tip was everything! Your channel is helping me create a fantastic month in Paris this summer! Thank you! I purchased your other guide and will look into the new one.
Thanks for another wonderful petit tour de Paris. every time I watch current videos of Paris I see how much the city continues to change. While part of me would love to see Paris rarely if ever change (isn't nostalgia enough to send you running to the therapist's office?) I love that the internet makes it possible to be exposed to these changes in a way that would have been impossible during most of this city's history. One request--please slow down a bit. You sound manic, especially at the beginning of the video.
Lovely!
I love picnics, awesome, I will be in Paris next year and am already loving your guide
Thanks Olivia!
Oh, fun! I recognized Jess (Fat Tire Tour guide) from my trip in 2022! It was also kinda cool to hear her speak French with an Australian accent. I recommend Fat Tire's skip the line Eiffel Tower tour, too. Thanks for the vid.
I do enjoy your sparkling personality! Just came back from a wonderful trip to Paris and thanks mostly to your recommendations! Merci beaucoup
Fabulous video! Now I' m stoked to do a bike tour when I come in October. Merci, Jay!
Love to see your Pop!
Parents: Luxembourg gardens also has a really cute playground for little ones. It costs a small fee to access it, but imho it’s well worth it. My kids both loved it. 😊
Exceptional well done.
Definitely hv to try doing a sitting beside Seine with sandwich n drink in my next Paris trip. Canned beers are convenient. Could u suggest some good brands?
It's funny I have been watching HPI on TF1 and I see it in the background behind you
Cave a Bieres?! I think I'm in love!
How do you keep doing it? Thank you ❤
So great! Thanks Jay! Does anyone know what kind of camera Jay is using when he is on his bike? Would love to get one
Hey Jay! I'm going to Paris soon and would like to know if you order your food at restaurants in French. I know greeting them by saying bonjour is respectable, but I don't know much French. Thank you!
I noticed you didn't mention anything about alcohol laws? Where are you allowed to drink, where not? Champ de Mars and the Luxembourgh Gardens are usually alcohol prohobited no?
Champ de Mars may be in letter but definitely not in spirit. I've had many many a drink there (it's the only way to do it haha). Luxembourg gardens I'm not sure - I've never had a drink there. It is an arrondissement by arrondissement thing, I don't know them all, but I've had drinks at picnics in most parks like Buttes Chaumont or Monceau. Bord de la Seine is also drink friendly.
I love the idea of a picnic at the seine. But I have to ask..are public restrooms within a good short distance along it? Im just thinking of how wine goes right through me... 😆 🤷♀
On the northern quai in the center of town where Paris Plages is in the summer you have several stations of public toilets, yes! Best to picnic close... but not too close
@@JaySwanson Ah, thank you! :) ...and of course. sound advice.
Cool video at 11:08 mark, drone footage?
Thank you for all the tips you’ve given in this video.
P.S. Yes, I really do love your charming personality.
Your dad is so cool. Meanwhile, my dad couldn’t give 2 hoots about hand sanitizer or where he’s sitting and eating lol
👍😎
Your arsonist joke scorched my screen because it was that good 🔥
Get cat also it helps?
finding food that can be eaten outside in the Paris region isn't the hard thing, there are plenty shops, bakeries, epiceries to get food that's "portable" (ie: France isn't really a streetfood culture, you usually have to be sitting down to eat, but that can be on a bench or on the grass), the trick is to know where the nice-ish public restrooms are, lol.
That's the true mastery of the city right there 😆
Fat tire doesn’t offer Paris tours yet? Tried booking it, and couldn’t find it
Your dad and I are soulmates. #handsanitizerhomies
Here for the charming personality.. bien sûr!
Ginger Jeff Goldblum.
I’m ambivalent about picnics but with the right people, it’s great fun. Although we should normalise solo picnics.
Going on picnics in Paris is like something out of Pinterest. I could be wrong.
Note to Self: Jay is partial to watermelons so don’t hesitate to offer him some.
Are you ashamed of your father ? You didn't introduce him :) Also, do you have a list of your preferred brunches in Paris ?
