The very first time I visited Paris I stayed in a tiny room in a 2 star hotel very, very close to the Sorbonne so that area has always had a special place in my heart. The room was so small that you could only walk around 2 sides of the bed. There was a toilet in a closet in the room but the shower was down the hall and shared with all the other rooms. I had a wonderful time.
I was sat at that same table at Shakespeare & Co just last week with my French & German daughters. (former exchange students I was visiting). My French daughter has recently graduated from the Sorbonne and wanted to show us where she studied. We then walked around, almost following you exactly. The Cluny, love that museum, went into the Kilo shop, walked down St-Severin, (what's with a pirate themed candy shop?), visited the Sorbonne and sat in the same little place with the fountains where the students hang out. We spent the rest of they day enjoying the sun in the Jardin du Luxembourg. I love Paris and always check your videos for hints and tips.
I was in Paris last week and stayed at an AirB&B located at Rue Frédéric Sauton in the Latin Quarter area. For us this is by far the best area. It was close to Notre-Dame but in a quite street. Lots of authentic French restaurants. We ate at Chez René twice, that restaurant is amazing. And a mexican restaurant called Anahuacalli... so so good 😊 the little streets in between Notre-Dame and Saint Germain are so lively, lots of happy people wondering around. I totally love this area! There is also a small great place around the Pantheon called Egglicious, the sandwiches there are so fluffy and crispy at the same time, it was delicious. Paris is definitely always a good idea 😊
I live at Île Saint-Louis so I saw it all but the vibe you create is so enjoyable. And of course, ever since you got Cooper your net worth raised exponentially.
Great video Jay, one place that I think needs to be mentioned in the Saint-Severin area you blew past is the jazz club Caveau de la Huchette! It is more touristy since it was featured in La La Land but it is one of the best places in town to hear authentic swing music and to swing dance. Great venue absolutely dripping with the jazz history of Paris.
Lol- the very ending! This area brings back a lot of good memories. 🙂 There’s a lot to do and see. Thanks for sharing and I’m looking forward to some of the in-depth videos, too! This one really scratched an itch for some truly classic Parisian locations. 🙏🏼
Hi Jay, this is my favorite area of Paris. Thanks to your videos I was able to enjoy all of Paris! Can’t wait to go back but in the mean time our rewatch your videos again! Stay well.
I am watching a ton of your videos to prep for my second visit to Paris. I am so thankful the newer ones are not handheld, shaky close up of your face. I actually enjoy watching these.
As a connoisseur of many Paris travel guides, I’ve always been fascinated by the Latin Quarter and I’ve associated it not with dance forms but with Dark Academia. P.S. ‘Latin Quarters’ is the name of an apparel brand. Close enough for a fun fact.
We are staying on Rue Monge this week and would have missed the arena if you hadn’t mentioned it. I am also using your 2022 Guide to Paris. Thanks so much.
Hi Debbie, Emily here. I noticed you made your purchase of the 2022 guide in early 2023 - which means you're eligible for a free update. I've just sent an email your way to download it, hoping you can use it a bit before you leave!
Yes, please, show us the interior of the Cluny museum. I loved NYC’s Cloisters museum and was debating whether to visit the Cluny the next time I’m in Paris. Great photography BTW-love the way you frame things up.
This is the area i'm staying in on my next visit and this has got me looking forward to it even more! Might have to replicate the Banh Mi / amphitheatre trip! Thankyou (and Cooper) for this ❤
Have stayed in the Latin Quarter in 2018 when visiting with daughter. Great eateries and easy walk to many parts of Paris. I try a different area each time I go. Happy travels. Cheers from 🇦🇺
The arena was right down the street from my hotel on Place Monge. Such a cool spot! Wish you had posted this 2 weeks ago while I was there, but I guess I’ll just have to come back. I loved checking out all the cool book stores in the area.
Ah I didn't expect another video to drop before I leave for Paris so I'm definitely jotting some of these down for when I go in May! Thanks for all these little tips :)
So great running into you!! I need a Paris do-over. Should have listened to your videos. We packed in too many tours. No free time to just walk around and the weather was AWFUL! I need to come back ! ASAP!
LOL It used to be the university quarter in the Middle-Ages. Teaching was delivered in Latin and students often talked among themselves in Latin because some came from abroad. Incidentally, English students had their college "rue des Anglais" (still on the map). They were said to be _caudés_ "(big)-tailed".
Love it. I always find it a funny name for the quarter, but also it is what it is so might as well highlight the good stuff so everyone enjoys it 🍻 whether it exists or not 😆
Way to go: the Latin Quarter doesn't exist! If it's romantic, if it has literary vibes, if it is burdened with French mythology, that's all the existentialism necessary. Another fun video from you, Jay (and Cooper), and it's lovely to revisit the Latin Quarter through this vid.
Thanks for your videos. I'm going to watch all of them as I'll be in Paris next month (Latin quarter). I'm fond of croissants and crepes but pertty sure can find sth else to become fond of.
I think I visited St Etienne du Mont based on your (or may Les Frenchies') recommendation. Not sure if it's just my eyes, but it has the most vibrant, almost electric stained glass windows!
Such a beautiful part of town. I imagine a quiet retirement there, which might sound weird but it has the right combo of calm and plenty to do that fits for me.
To the ears of an Englishman, you pronounced the name of that pub totally correctly lol. I do like that cluster of streets at the side of the Pantheon and I seem to remember there being a big fruit and veg market at the top of Rue Mouffetard but I think that’s no longer there ? Cheers for a great video Jay!
I used to hang out a lot around the Quartier Latin during my school years. Now I live in the US, and I miss it a lot, plus it's not the same anymore, too touristy.
Was in Paris last week and missed a lot of the things that we wanted to do which you listed: try a Banh Mi in Paris (to compare what we have in Sydney), Jardin des Plantees, Arene De Luteces etc
La Sorbonne, as a old university, was "officially" named Paris IV university. But it has, then, been merged with an other university: Pierre et Marie Curie University. (Paris VI). The naming if this new structure (2018) was named "Sorbonne University". So to recapitulate, the new Sorbonne University, includes the former Pierre et Marie Curie University and the former la Sorbonne to z new structure that has decided to use the name "Sorbonne"
1. ?Does your critique of the Saint-Séverin neighborhood include the Rue de la Huchette? Many years ago, we found it to be quite enjoyable, but maybe not so much now?? 2. We were able to get into the Sorbonne medical school (off Rue Dupuytren) in 2004 without difficulty; just be polite. Got shots of lectures in progress and the painting of Charcot with a woman in a "hysterical" faint.
The Sorbonne was founded in the 13th century by Pierre de Sorbon. But to my knowledge there is not any kind of remains or ruins from that time were the university (Paris I ) stands nowadays. People only studied theology back then. Now it's a complicate thing were different colleges claim the name hence when people try to explain it to foreigners and locals it can be a mess 😂. Anyway, beautiful quartier plus it's near the Luxembourg garden.
