This is almost exactly the same as my grandma's scalloped potato recipe! It is so delicious! The only difference is we don't add the cheese since it is already so rich from the cream, and we sprinkle flour between layers of potatoes to help it thicken up.

That’s how my mother made scalloped potatoes too. Using 3% (homogenized) milk instead of cream and no cheese. I like this version but I might leave out the onions and do a couple of layers with Gruyère in between and on top.

Excellent in France we call it a "gratin de pommes de terre".
Yours is very nice and certainly very good.
There are regional variations like: gratin dauphinois, um, quite a poem too.
    Different, but delicious.
There are potatoes, milk, sometimes full cream, salt, pepper, NO cheese. We pour the potatoes in a buttered dish (as you did for your recipe!) we can also rub the bottom of the dish with a clove of garlic, then we add between each layer of potatoes a little salt, pepper, some small splinters of butter and we start again until the dish is filled. We finish by pouring the milk (or a mixture of milk and heavy cream)
Put in the oven and cover with aluminum foil for 45 minutes, then uncover and put back in the oven until the top is golden brown +/- 25 to 30 minutes.
Leave it in the oven turned off for a few minutes until the potatoes have absorbed all the liquid (if necessary)
With a grilled meat, or just with a well seasoned green salad it is wahou delicious 😋
If you try it, bon appétit.
    And kisses from France 🇫🇷

My son asked for a home made potato bake with bacon for dinner tonight to go with my home made chicken schnitzel.
So I thought I would look up some good methods for preparing and cooking on UA-cam.
I watched a few and I must say that your way of preparing and loading the backing dish was very appealing to me.
It was so easy with no fuss in loading the dish, all I need to do is just add the lightly pre cooked bacon to mine.
I also appreciate your clear instructions and your recommendations as you worked through step by step.
All the helpful hints you gave along the way they makes such a difference in the kitchen, like wiping around the edge of the
    dish
before putting into the oven. It makes cleaning up after would so much easier.
You describe the taste and texture of the end result of the meal once served.
I enjoy traditional cooking from scratch with whole foods.
I look forward to watching some more of your wonderful healthy cooking recipes, with the fun and enjoyment one can have
    in the kitchen.
I find it very satisfying and rewarding, when cooking for my family and friends.
Thank you so much for sharing your gifts and talents with the world.

I did make it and cut up a few sausages and rashers after cooking them and it went down a treat the same as your cream sauce with mushroom my Nephew in his middle 30s said it was the best dinner he ever had. They are simple recipes very easy to make and room for adjustment to add things if you wish. Going to make more and this time freeze as I can't afford to buy frozen and fill freezer. Thanks a million for your great simple and easy recipes you are truly great

I'm forgot to say I'm in my 60s using mobility scooter etc and these are a God send especially when you can freeze them sometimes I can't leave home for maybe two weeks with weather and these are a great benefit so I don't have to go hungry until someone drops in that can make it to the shop for me, thanks

I'd leave the peel on ( hate peelng ugh) and as much as I love cream and cheese added, I would only ever do this rarely due to the very high fat content. Looks amazing though.

Just made this and it was really good! Decreased potato a bit and added half a small head of cauliflower. Very creamy and tasty! I couldnt slice the potato like you did, so I just diced it into bite sized pieces.

I’ve got a 25kg sack of potatoes and it’s only me and the misses...so this recipe will be a amazing help to batch make some and freeze...might mix it up and add some mushrooms bit of smoked bacon...Simple and easy...thank you your videos are brilliant 👌

    • @ChefJackOvens

This is the perfect recipe to make large batches and freeze it down. 25kg is a fair amount of potatoes. Looks like you’ve got a lot of potatoes to cook 😉. I also have some other great potato recipes on the channel and will be doing more very soon. It’s such a great versatile ingredient. Mushrooms and Bacon would be a great addition to the potato bake. I’m glad you enjoy the content. Thank you for the support! 👌👌

I was so taken with this recipe that I wanted to make it today, and not have it as a side dish but to have as a main meal, so I placed an order with a well known website who could deliver within a couple of hours (I’m partially disabled and don’t have any means of transport) I halved the recipe and started making it at 2:30 this afternoon, I found it so easy and not just to prepare but, to not have a massive mess to clean up! I put it in the oven for an hour, took the foil off, added the cheese, set an alarm on my phone for 30 minutes, went to sit on my bed to give my sore swollen legs a bit of respite, and fell asleep 😦 the alarm didn’t wake me…it’s now 10:00pm, about three and a half hours since I was to start eating my meal! It was salvageable in bits, but definitely nowhere near as tasty as it should have been! I’m thinking that, since I have enough to make it again I might try in a few days, when I’ve got over my bitter disappointment!

Probably the 3rd or 4th time I have made it. Lots more garlic(home grown) had some bacon in the fridge half cooked it and cut it up. Had some leftover mushroom sauce chucked that in too. Mixed it up and out in the dish. Awesome. leftovers? add them too....can be a meal in itself
