I'm just going to say this, had the pleasure of comparing Aryas and HEKse for an extended period of time, and HEKse is a huge step up in terms of details mids and top end + air extension over Arya (which is already $1600) . It took me literally 5 min to assert just how superior HEKse is in those areas. Arya is a great headphone for it's price, but oh God, this "review" is really subjective. Anyway, is HEKse worth $3500? No. The fit and finish is a bit meh, the box is a joke (looks quality but feels cheap and over-engineered) ... but the sound is worth it ... and as with Aryas these are light and comfortable, a bit heavier than Aryas but a bit more comfortable clamp and fit wise. If these had a proper premium finish / materials and were presented properly in a nice box I would say these are worth the money. As it stands I think they are worth around $2500 all things considered. The sound is spectacular so much so, that I sold my Aryas in an instant after comparing the two but I did get a really good deal on HEKse.
So is HEKse worth it? From perspective of pure sound they do perform the part, but as an overall package I would probably say no. On promotion or 2nd hand tho $2500 is about right.
Unless you have $3500 burning a hole in your pocket, then just buy them purely for performance.

Yup. I got the HEKse for 1699 USD in the recent sale, and good god, there isn't anything to compete with it much under 2000usd for resolving capability. Ovalesque soundstage, almost as wide as an 800s, so detailed I now hear the lips of vocalists smacking quietly just as they open their mouth to begin singing and subbass on classical tracks among others that I didn't even know was there. So if you get off on that, it is great. The tradeoff though is dynamics and vocal warmth isn't there without EQ, the kind you sometimes get with focal and sennheiser, and that won't be everyone's cup of tea, but for classical tracks the soundstage is fantastic and weirdly it works well for EDM and related genres. The real thing for me is the treble is well controlled, I found the ARYA line [including the organic] to be aritificial with boosted treble to the point of being painful and messing with timbre of instruments.

"But if you're after just sound. If you're just after that great sound and headphone that you want to love for a long time, then I have no doubt you should get the Edition X v2." Said after comparing price and "having the best out there".
I took that to mean dollar for dollar, you're saying the Edition X v2 is a better buy. I respect those opinions. I think most people do, and that's what they're really wondering. Is it really worth it to spend THAT MUCH MORE MONEY for something that doesn't keep that money-to-benefit ratio. I think a lot of people watch and read these reviews to learn that.
    Thanks for being honest!

i haven't tried the he1000se/v2 so can't really say much but i'm using HEX V2 and they're great headphones.
one thing i would like to add or discuss is that the type of people that buy hi-end headphones (or anything luxurious in any other hobbies) aren't necessarily turned down by the P/P ratio at all. The he1000se may only sound like 10% better but i believe that's what those people are looking for. The tiny bits missing to their ideal kind of sound.

  • @JimmyCheng
    @JimmyCheng 5 років тому +5

the question is, how did you drive them. With proper amping, the he1000se sounds quite a bit more refined and impactful than the hex v2. Comparing to he1000 v2 though, I don't see as much improvement, so I have to say the he1000 v2 on discount for less than 2000 dollars is quite a good deal these days.

I completely agree with this review. Well Personally i find the focal clear/stellia more comfortable. I couldn't find a huge difference with testing the HE1000se vs Hifiman Anada. Btw I loved the ananda when I just tested it today. It did feel pretty bright but I didn't exactly dislike or felt uncomfortable about it. I don't know if it even was brightness but the detail was amazing on it. I have some notes written down on this and I'll probably rewrite this at a later time. I'm going to test more headphones tomorrow.

@@Jayiyagi Well I was so tired after hearing them for maybe 2-3 hours straight and going back and forth. And basically my conclusion on this is that in terms of sound I preferred the Ananda>HE1000se>Arya. Reason for this is mostly because these headphones are pretty bright while the Arya being the brightest makes some of my favorite songs sound a little like nightcore specifically weeb music(jpop/jrock). I didn't really like that sort of signature so comparing the Arya and Ananda I feel like the Arya is more v-shaped? And the ananda has better mids on it. I felt like the bass on all 3 of these were adequate for enjoyment in this order Arya>Ananda>HE1000se. Still I prefer the Ananda because it doesn't really make it feel as bright? I never heard of any other headphone I auditioned in these past two days that could make my songs sound like that. It was such a weird feeling even specifically bright headphones the Beyers line up didn't exactly follow the Arya/Ananda signature anywhere near it. Maybe this isn't exactly called brightness? I'm not sensitive to brightness at all really. Soundstage wise I felt HE1000se>Arya>Ananda although I couldn't tell a huge difference on ananda and arya, same as well in that order for imaging and how well it can get intimate. After listening to the HE1000se I wasn't as amazed with the HD 800 soundstage or imaging, maybe because I didn't own them at home and had the time to play FPS games with them. Still $3500 is no way something I would pay for the HE 1000se even the HE 1000 V2 which is about $2600? Way too much... The difference between Ananda vs HE1000se was so minor it didn't make me happy to spend that almost 3 times as much, Arya well it does have a better build quality I might risk the ananda and just take extremely good care of it. Ananda was personally one of the top few headphones there I listened. I also listened to the Jade II,Susvara, HE6se and that wasn't as appealing to me as the other 3 above especially for their prices. I had a brief moment of listening to the Shangri LA and the JR version and it was pretty decent in it's bass response. They were immediately noticeable when switching them back and forth although I need more time with them which probably won't happen for a while.

i am sorry but this is a terrible review and misleading. Edition X is 25 ohms and 103 sensitivity while HE1000 V2 with 35 ohms and only 90 sensitivity(HE1000 se with 96). Their drivers are totally different(and 1000se even equipped with stealth magnet tech from Susvara.) You should check your amp with their output power at different ohms and you need much more power output to drive HE1000 series. From my system with GSX MK2, HE1000 V2 is already much better than edition x or ananda in terms of micro detail, resolution, tonal balance and almost everything. And they sound quite different and you can easily tell from their frequency response. I highly suspect you underpower HE1000se significantly while edition x and ananda are both advertised to be easier to drive, which reduces their gap. Your website reviews are also very careless and amateur. You should at least list your amp and dac, what music are you listening and then compare. Orchestra music are usually much more demanding than pop/rock in terms of raw headphone performance.Hifiman headphones are overpriced, true, but their engineers are not that stupid to give very minor improvement on their flagship product.

I like your reviews. I have no doubt you are telling true opinions and ideas, but your reviews should be more in detail and polished. I agree with you that looking at frequency graphs alone is useless but a set of multiple measurements including frequency response at least reflects some of the sound quality of a pair of headphones.
I think he1000 is nowhere near good value also, but they do offer good improvement over Edx once you feed them enough power. And to me,hekV2 and Edx sound indeed different. Edx is much easier to drive to a reasonably good sound, that is probably your point here.

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your candid opinion.
Your opinions regarding the sound of the Ananda confirm that you’ve burned them in properly prior to expressing your thoughts and conclusions.
Most other reviewers have been very tepid in their reviews regarding the Ananda. They’re reviewing the Ananda right out of the box, and trying desperately to be kind. Read between the lines. The Ananda sounds awful out of the box. It only takes about 50 hours for them to start opening up. I expect mine to continue improving up to the 200 hour mark as Hifiman indicates.
I’m absolutely delighted with these Cans. I have Sundara’s that I’ve loved for over a year, and the Ananda crushes the Sundara. Most reviewers rate them as being very close, which in my opinion is complete Rubbish. I have a very high end dedicated headphone system, and the Ananda scales amazingly well. Perhaps these other reviewers I’ve read are using junk.
You will never hear what the Ananda can do if you use junk, and or review them out of the box. Thank you for doing it right. The review world needs an honest, intelligent voice.

I agree with the idea that above a certain price, it is usually difficult to notice a performance improvement equal to the difference in price.
But in this video there are a lot of confusing things.
First, you are comparing the HE1000 ($3,500) with others Hifiman, but you talk about the Edition XS ($499) and you give an incorrect price reference and you never show them. The one you show, that you also talk about the Ananda (699 $) isn't really an Ananda or an Edition XS, what you're continually showing an Arya ($1,299) and that's pretty clear because of the headband design.
In my opinion, the message about the diminishing returns in general may be valid, but the comparisons are, at least, confusing.
