I hope this comes to the American movie theaters. I've been waiting almost 40 years for this.
If it ever does. The costumes need to be redesigned. These superheroes were wearing ordinary capes. In the original animation, they flew on wings.
It’s called “Battle of the Planets”, and it will be produced by the directors of the two Avengers movies: Infinity War and Endgame. It was announced in the middle of Summer 2019, but I want Anthony and Joe Russo to change the title to “Gatchaman”, and I want the movie to be distributed by Paramount Pictures in North America and Warner Bros. Pictures internationally, with Legendary Entertainment and Village Roadshow Pictures producing. And the perfect director and executive producer for this movie? Directed by Michael Bay (The Rock)! And Steven Spielberg (Raiders of the Lost Ark) is the executive producer! And I want it to come out on June 24, 2027. So I’ll be 27 years old in the summertime with my dad (hopefully) having grandchildren.

Big flashback to the 70's when I was a kid. I think this was called Battle of the Planets back then in the US and the team was G-Force. Was one of my favorites after school. This, Speed Racer and Starblazers were the first anime I'd ever seen and I drew these characters constantly. :-)
Star Blazers, BOTP, X-Men, LOTR and Star Wars all have one thread in common: Joseph Campbell Hero Quest.
I grew up watching it also Mazinger Z.

Gatchaman helped establish the convention of the five member hero team that has been emulated in later series, most notably the successful tokusatsu Super Sentai franchise (a genre exemplified by the English series adaptation of the Power Rangers franchise many years later); in fact, the Sentai series Chōjin Sentai Jetman was in many ways a homage to Gatchaman.

@@1acroyear1 Gatchaman is the name of the team. much like the "Samurai Sentai" or Samurai Ranger's name is Shinkenger. and Bump of Chicken is the name of the band that sang the movie's theme song. If the question is the origin of the name, it's not from the concept of goosebumps but rather a weird missinterpretation when making the name of the group. it was actually intended to be something like "Cowards Fight Back" (it's just that the English for "fight" became "bump" and "coward" became "chicken.")

@@1acroyear1 "Samurai Sentain Shinkenger" is the whole name, Shinkenger is the name of the team. "Kagaku Ninja Tai Gatchaman" is their whole name where Kagaku Ninja Tai means Science Ninja Team. Gatchaman is the name of the team, which means nothing
Gatchaman was from Japan, You guys got it from us. Like super sentai ( power ranger ) Godzilla, the ring, the grudge, resident evil, and many other shows American love.
And you guys got Elvis impersonators, When Elvis left the building.
Amazing, in south america we remember this anime by the name "G-Force" or "Fuerza G"
in the UK it was 'Battle of The Planets' and it was heavily censored for kids. When the violence kicked off the robot used to just narrate telling the audience a softer kid friendly version of what went on in the violent or adult part of the story

this movie is unexpectedly beautiful, the budget for the movie was well used, not bad for a japanese movie compare to hollywood movies. thumbs up and ayano gou and ayame gouriki is in here definitely it has to be good, i just watched the mid half to ending scences definitely im going to watch it soon.
Somehow, I knew this was going to get the live-action treatment... and it's awesome!
I can't wait to see this! Gotchaman is one of my all time favorites!

Mexico particularily thank you guys for Saint Seiya, Dragon Ball and Captain Tsubasa. You should witness the cultural impact those show had here, and their popularity still endures to the fact Dragon Ball STILL airs here on broadcast TV daily, without interruptions for basically 20 years already.

I used to love watching this as a kid when it was re-edited and dubbed in English as Battle of the Planets and then G-Force. Never saw the Eagle Riders incarnation. Hope this gets English subtitles and distributed in North America.

Gotta watch the unedited Gatchaman cartoons with subtitles. You are missing out. It's a lot darker and creepier and violent than the weak American versions.

This brings back memories of "Battle of the Planets". Little did I know at the time, the "G" in G-force is not "Gravity" but Gatchaman. The way that announcer pronounced it, it's like "Gothca, man!" :-D

I really wish Japanese studios could get the special effects of Hollywood - this with Pacific Rim quality effects could be amazing.

As americans we have a high standard for cgi but america is the exception with the quality of effects and crowd expectation. In america we value realism and quality of effects. In Asian countries though it's more about the spectacle. It's not for a lack of quality or trying on japanese fx part that gives it a cartoony, silly, unrealistic vibe. It's the style that the japanese fx team chose to employ. Think less PR and more Power Rangers.

This is awesome. In the early 1980's, this was coming on WPIX in New York. It was called,"Battle of the Planets", but us kids called it, "G-Force" for whatever reason. We loved it! We would play, "G-Force" on the playground. And is that ZOLTAR at 0:45? Zoltar's unmasking was one of the most dramatic moments of the series.

Gatchman is a 2013 Japanese superhero film about a group of people working for a special organization to fight back the so-called Galactors. The group of 5 must, of course, save the world from these galactors, and in the process a secret both about the origin of their powers and what happened 5 years ago is revealed and threatens to tear the world into the abyss. I found Gatchaman to be an entertaining and well-made film, with high production values and good acting, but unfortunately also plagued by the usual problems of a superhero film. It starts with the fact that this world has to be properly explained in the first 15 minutes so that you don't get confused later. And if the uniforms from the drawn original were implemented quite faithfully, the old problem still arises that what looks good in drawing does not necessarily look good in the real picture, which is shown, among other things, by the fact that the uniforms look far better when they are have no cloaks. If you either understand Japanese or can get hold of a subtitled version and like superhero movies outside of Marvel and DC, you should check this out.
I saw this on UA-cam years ago it was good but you couldn't get a full screen.
I think in america this was called G-Force back in the 80s. The anime series was great.

They were trying to americanize it. A lot of anime back then would change things to make the show somewhat american. Salior Moon was like that.
Ya I know. I just wish they were thinking it through a bit more. And Sailor Moon wasn't that badly off. ... They needed less annoying voice actors for sarina though. OMG. XD

I watched this a few days ago. I expected a kick ass movie like the Avengers and it turned out to be like a Japanese soap opera. The first battle is the best bit of the movie after that it gets quite boring.

i disagree, i found the story quite compelling, and the denouement exciting. even action movies need more than "bam, pow, explosion" to be good.
Just saw it as part of the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal.
The first 15 minutes of the film were fantastic with a great way to set up the story and an awesome action sequence.
... but after that the movie got bogged down into WAAAAAAYYY to much exposition and tried to be really over melodramatic with a really silly story.
My rating 5 / 10
Oh man, those shows were SO good! There were more, but those you mentioned are THE all-time classics! We had the last DBZ film here, too, Battle of the Gods! Nostalgia to the max...

Trivia: In 2009, Tori Matsuzaka played as Shinken Red from Samurai Sentai Shinkenger. In this movie, he plays as Ken the Eagle, whom in turn is the counterpart for Red Hawk from Choujin Sentai Jetman.

You realize that Gatchaman is one of the inspirations for Super Sentai and predates Power Rangers by, iirc, 20 years?
It looks cheap for me from the trailer. Anime were always better in Japan. People just don't take the original seriously.

The original cartoon reruns aired in some form on the Cartoon Network, but it was called "G-Force" and English dubbed. I remember be so excited watching it, it was my favorite show. It was the most violent cartoon I'd seen and the main guy was called Galactor lol. Some kinda of cross dressing evil alien, very intriguing enigmatic villain
