Hello my dear Zambian brother. I stayed in Zambia for over 9 years. Fantastic people, fantastic place. Madras is the name of Chennai in India. Maybe the original people who came from India were from there.
What was Chennai previously called? Chennai was previously called Madras. Madras was the shortened name of the fishing village Madraspatnam, where the British East India Company built a fort and factory (trading post) in 1639-40

At the start of the video, that area adjacent to Kamwala shopping area is called Bombay. That's where LICEF school is. The neighbouring suburb is called Madras as you correctly said. I spent part of my childhood in Madras.

The Indian owned, houses, the neighbourhoods, you find in Kamwala, Rhodes Park, Madras, and towns like Chipata are reflective of the fact; successive Zambian govts, over the decades, outsourced the Zambian middle class strata (position) to Indians, Lebanese, and other foreign groups. In functioning countries with well oriented govts, the middle class, is reserved for the locals, who make up the majority of the population. Small to medium sized businesses, are by law, by practice, restricted to the locals. The designated middle class businesses entail shops, light manufacturing of hardware and foodstuffs, guest houses and small hotels, hunting safaris, and light engineering, the drilling of boreholes, and small scale mining. To surrender your middle class is tantamount to giving your country away; a betrayal of the spirit for which our fore fathers & mothers, fought independence for. Zambia is home to 6% of the worlds known copper reserves, and Zambia's emeralds are 2nd only to Colombias in terms of grade. These aforementioned facts along with many other economic accolades, attributed to Zambia, must translate to some form of wealth for the average Zambian. But what we have instead witnessed is kleptocratic wealth, acquired by those entrusted to safeguard our interests.

I think they don't hide per say these Indians. These are old houses which have been renovated. The Indians here, most of them are Zambian Indians. Typically our Indian people live all together as big families. It's their tradition.

Madras is named after the city of Chennai in India. Chennai used to be called Madras. Madrassa is an Islamic school. No connection between the two.
