You guys are absolutely right about how heavily a finish can change flavors. There's an aged rum I love called Dos Maderas, and they have two versions at our stores. 5+3 and 5+5 (referring to aging/finishing). They are Caribbean rums aged for 5 years in oak casks, which is pretty standard. Then they ship them to Spain age them for 3 years in Oloroso sherry casks. So you get a slightly salty, nutty, fruity taste from the sea and the sherry in both. But the 5+5 batch is aged for only 2 more years in Pedro Ximenez barrels, often as old as 20-25 years. The difference between these two rums is mindblowing. It's easily worth the extra 10 bucks, but the flavor is spectacular. You can taste the syrupy sweet sherry, with the burnt butterscotch taste of the rum following after. I've been so interested in a Scotch finished in such barrels, but they are a bit out of my price range at the moment, lol.

Which ones? What order? I'll be heading to the store to get some more Glencairns. Should I pick up a bottle of something different? The tasting will be around 7pm. What should we have for dinner? Should we eat before or after tasting? Give me all your thoughts. Much appreciated. P.S. Before I started watching your channel I owned 3 bottles of whiskey now I have 16. That was 3 months ago. RIP my wallet.
I'm certainly not an expert, but I would vote to do dinner before the tasting. You may want to give it 30 or 45 minutes afterwards with some water, but that way no one is drinking on an empty stomach. As far as what you should eat, I'd say whatever you can get everyone to agree on. Getting more than 3 or 4 people to agree on food can be like herding cats. As far as which whiskeys, it would depend on what you're trying to do. Are you just showing how different whiskey can be? Do you want something from each major whiskey country? Highlighting the differences in Scotch whiskys or American whiskeys?
@kevin K I'm thinking of highlighting the world of whiskey. I want to have as wide of a breadth as possible, but not have all 16 and everyone is drunk AF on the last couple tastings.
Oh wow, just checked the local liquorstore and they've gotten something i've not seen before. It's a duo of Highland Park, Fire Edition and Ice Edition. Awesome episode guys. You guys never disappoint.
Great instruction. Filled some of the knowledge gaps. Very worthwhile content. Thax in advance.
Great reviews guys. About the Madeira cask finish, Port wine is another example of portuguese fortified wine, however madeira is a vulcanic island and the wine becomes very unique tasting due to this soil. Cheers
I have an idea...... treat the “wood” with (Vanilla, clove, spices, etc,) then build your “New” barrels. Would that still allow the bourbon label?
Thanks for the highlight, could you answer the question?
Classic Vault episode, love it!!!
Angels envy was my first wisky I enjoyed through you guys. Thank you keep it up!!
An hour-long whiskey vault episode? Christmas came early this year!
Well, I saw your vid from five years out yakkin’ about “The Ten Top Whisk(e)ys for Beginners”. I tried Four Roses, good, but I decided I’ll stick with The Brits’ malts.
Good Stuff.
Keep on Drammin’!
🥃
Now I gotta go to my local whiskey stacked bar and spend all this money trying these....thanks a lot
i always enjoy listening to you guys
Joseph Magnus is worth every penny. So good.
Hey guys and members of the Tribe. I'm doing a whiskey tasting and wanted your help.
These are the bottles I currently own:
Basil Hayden's Rye
Whistle Pig Rye
Michter's American Whiskey
Jameson
Yellow Spot 12
Nikka Coffey Grain
Hakushu 12
Yamazaki 12
Monkey Shoulder
Macallan 12 Double Cask
Highland Park 12
Laphroaig Quarter Cask
Lagavulin 16
Caol Ila 12
Ardbeg Kelpie
Bruichladdich Octomore 7.1
How many should the tasting consist of? Which ones?
Parker DelPonte I’m sure you can figure this out big guy...
*big guy*
for you...
@kevin K I'm thinking of highlighting the world of whiskey. I want to have as wide of a breadth as possible, but not have all 16 and everyone is drunk AF on the last couple tastings.
Makers 46 is my favorite bourbon. you guys are awesome.
Oh wow, just checked the local liquorstore and they've gotten something i've not seen before. It's a duo of Highland Park, Fire Edition and Ice Edition. Now, they're far above my current budget, but just out of curiosity, if you guys get a hold of those, i think it would an interesting opportunity for some comparison and reviewing to be done.
Angel's envy. I just tried this a few weeks ago and I gotta say its wonderful
Im watching this 7 days before my 20th birthday (im from norway) im excited to Get on the whiskey-train !
Funniest and most informative show I’ve ever seen. Like Abbot & Costello on steroids !!! Thanks Guys
Excellent episode guys. Not a Bourbon fan but I will definitely try a couple of these. Jefferson's Ocean is at my store so that's one. Also shouts to the Tribe for shooting this top 10 list. You Magnificent Basterd's. I also need to mention that I really pissed the wife off recently. She was not happy and scowled at me for a couple days. I put a stick in a nonstick pan.
Hey guys, thanks for introducing me to monkey shoulder. I never really liked scotch, only ever tried Johnny Walker.
I'm a big bourbon guy. One of my favorites is woodford reserve. Bookers is what I drink when it's been a long day.
Great video today guys. Love the breakdowns of how bourbon makers are doing things on the finishing end.
I'm drinking Laga 16 and enjoying reviews on bourbon. I want the Angels Envy
A scotch I wish the boys would review is the Aberlour 18 year old. Easily in my Top 3 scotches - exception flavor complexity with a very balanced finish.
Yay Madeira!! My first island home.
Greetz from Sydney!!
I don't know if you have answered this before and if you have I apologize. I've been subscribed for a few months now and am working my way through all the videos (I'm a stay at home dad and have a bunch of time on my hands) haha. How do I find out which whiskeys use sourced whiskey? I'm not a snob and don't care if it is or not just curious to know. Love the channel and have learned a ton and have tried some amazing whiskeys thanks to you guys. Keep it coming! Thanks
I love the bit about Jefferson loving wine so much he went broke. Can't take it with you!
Evening Daniel & Rex, new viewer here loving the videos. Trying to watch as many as can.... notice you like the Teeling Whiskeys, Have ye tried Teeling Stout cask Galway bay yet??
Ciarán from Ireland.
