Joel has gone out of his way to say that the song had more to do with his own innocent and natural lust than cajoling a Catholic into sex by explaining that salvation is far away. I mean, that might be an unintended retrospective message, but to say that "...that's what he's trying to say there..." puts words in the artist's mouth and almost smacks of condescension. I'm sure that Joel, an artist who still brings it after 50+ years, would appreciate it if people would stay in their own lane insofar as lyric interpretation goes. But, what do I know? I've only been gigging for 30 years.
