Lyrics:
Come out Virginia, don't let me me wait
You Catholic girls start much too late
But sooner or later it comes down to fate
I might as well be the one
They showed you a statue and told you to pray
They built you a temple and locked you away
But they never told you the price that you pay
For things that you might have done...
Only the good die young
You might have heard I run with a dangerous crowd
We ain't too pretty, we ain't too proud
We might be laughing a bit too loud
But that never hurt no one
Come on Virginia show me a sign
Send up a signal I'll throw you the line
The stained-glass curtain you're hiding behind
Never lets in the sun
Darling, only the good die young

OMG! I AM 67! 2024!! Was I really 20 years old when Billy entered my life? I CHERISH HIM more after 47 years!
I'm 35 and I finally can find meaning in the songs I grew up listening to as clueless as I was.
Me too lol
I remember hearing Captain Jack in the mid-70’s… the song really hit me hard and I’ve been hooked on Billy ever since.
U r still young sir … feel it from inside ….Till the last breath u r young
I am 54 and grew up with his music!
I remember putting this on the turntable in about 1982 and my sister playing her flute along to it. Two years later she was gone to cancer aged 25 and this memory took on a whole new meaning.
I hope she had a good life even if it was cut short
What cancer
That sounds like a beautiful memory. Very sad for your loss.
Wow. Deep comment. My condolences
You might see her again in a new life

"I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints, the sinners are much more fun." What a great line.
The irony is it's the sinners who cry and the saints who laugh.

Rest in Peace, Charlie! Best father in law ever. You were taken way too soon at 41 years old. I’ll be 40 in two months.. really puts things into perspective. Your wife and kids loved this song that I chose for your memorial… your siblings were appalled. You would have loved it! I was a catholic girl but no longer. I still love anything Billy Joel.
Lol...me too. I had my Confirmation the same year this album came out, I was 13.
I bought the album but wouldn't play it when Mom was home.
I'm still Catholic and still feel a bit guilty for loving this brilliant song.

I've dated public schooled gals, which was good, but if you want great, only a Catholic school gal will do!
The GREATEST LINE EVER WRITTEN!!!!!! And I was a catholic school girl!!!!
Well... it was a line that predated this song! HOWEVER, Billy Joel filled out the sentiment and put it to some great music!

This song is like a secret nightmare for all parents with teenage daughters lol

Yeah except it’s laughable that 5 foot 5 Billy Joel sets himself up as the tough guy in this song. Not a very ‘dangerous crowd” exactly
And it’s funny because this song is Literally about Billy’s crush when he was a teenager.

Expand your horizons my young friend. Try a genre you would never have thought of. I recommend classic punk. Specifically Bad Religion. Sorrow, I want to conquer the world, Do what you want, are a few good songs to get you started. If you really study the music and the band behind it you may find some meaning in it that will speak to you. Greg Graffin, the lead singer, has a PhD in evolutionary biology. You know I'm mostly into punk, rap and alt rock. But every night I turn off the lights and just listen to Billy Joel, sit in my bed for a while and just think about life. I look out my window and I just stare at the moon, let the music sink into my brain. I relate to his music more so than any other artist. I'm at my most introspective when I turn on his music.
Then maybe you’re less into punk etc. than you admit to yourself?

This has been my motto for years and although, yes, I had "heard" the song a time or two in my 32 years of life, I had never really heard heard Billy Joel until a few weeks ago. This came out in 1977 when I was 13, the year I was Confirmed as a Catholic.
Went through 12 years of Catholic schools. I would dance around to this song in my room. I wouldn't play this album though when Mom was home.
I did and still feel a bit guilty for loving this song. From a huge Catholic family, I'm still Catholic but I believe God has a sense of humor.
This is such a brilliant song and so catchy. Love the piano at 2:58
Billy Joel used to be Catholic but is now an atheist. That's really sad.
With everything going on in the world today, the famine, the illnesses, the wars the prophesies in the Bible are coming to fruition. I'm so grateful I was born when I was. The 60's and 70's were fantastic times to be a kid. Pure and innocent. Nothing like kids have to deal with today. My heart goes out to them, honestly.
As awesome as this song is, older I get, I'd much rather cry with the Saints. I don't see much laughing happening hanging out with ghouls like Putin and Hitler.
As much as we all love this song, it's just a fun song. Don't take it too seriously.
Still love this song though.

I hate what has been done to those beautiful people. They are good, earth people who respect all of God's creation.
I'd rather spend eternity with them and my loved ones.
I refused to do confirmation and never went to church again.
I'm a confirmed Agnostic.
Prophesy in the Bible coming to fruition? War? Disease? As long as humans believe in eye for an eye instead of turn the other cheek there will always be war, and diseases. But the more developed we become based on our common interests of survival. Life liberty and the pursuit of happiness the better off we all will be. You talk of putin being evil but he is the one who is using beliefs In the Bible as a way to influence people in the west to support his land grab because he doesn't want the west's influence on his country like it has influenced Ukraine. Every human being has the right to exist and live their life free of religion if they so choose. In this song Billy Joel is talking about sex before marriage not genocide. I think we can agree genocide isn't comparable to curiosity and fooling around as a teenager? Pre marital sex? Or even affairs? Surely you aren't comparing the two. This is where religion really turns me off. I doubt you will ever see Billy Joel laughing with putin.
I'm so glad hughie unlocked my memories of growing up in Pennsylvania
