Firstly I don't think Steffi was at her best here (there's an interview with her on UA-cam from August 1994 where she talked about how she was overtraining and becoming quite underweight during that period, leaving her very tired), and also Mary really didn't handle the final well. She spent the night before giving interview after interview for TV, instead of relaxing and focussing. The pressure really got to her in the final and she played such a tense match.
Heinz Günthardt’s face at 17:09 says it all. He could tell right away that this was going to be a very tough match.

Arantxa played great tactical clay court tennis and was way more experienced at that point.
