    Martina talked about this match in an interview once- about crying after the match... she said it wasn't about losing, she mentions her parents and sister, then starts crying- she cried because they were only an hour away and she couldn't see them. Luckily, she saw them 3 months later when the Fed Cup was played in Prague- Martina's first time home in 11 years.

    Back then Berlin was my favorite tournament to watch - already before the era of Steffi Graf.

    Chris always said she could read Martina's emotions before a match.
    If she was super confident in the locker room, then Chris knew she herself was in for heck of a match.
    But if Martina was nervous or tentative, then Chris knew she had a shot of winning.
    Martina was never good at hiding her emotions during a match.
    Steffi must have read Martina was nervous in this match.

    Really interesting match - I got the impression that Martina had underestimated Steffi here (Steffi had never beaten her before this) and she was surprised by Steffi's pace at times - it made Martina look slow to react to some shots. Martina also seemed seemed very mentally unfocused at times, her concentration coming and going. Steffi, on the other hand, played a really disciplined, consistent match.

      T H I loved this Era. I loved serve & volleyers like Navratilova, McEnroe, Edberg & power baseliners like Graf & Lendl that pushed the game forward to the next generation, Becker, Sampras, Agassi & then to the newer generation & today's generation. You can see, watching Martina vs Steffi, how the older generation(Martina) wasn't used to the faster, heavier, harder hitting pace & weight of shot. As great an athlete as Martina was, she was not used to the pace & weight of Steffi's shots & court movement. And Steffi was used to dishing it out but not until Monica Seles' game came along was Steffi used to Receiving the same or even greater pace & weight of shot. I do believe Steffi Graf's superior athleticism would have been able to hang with today's game but it would not have been as easy as it was during her Era before pre-stabbed Monica Seles came along, in my opinion. I wish there was a "time" machine that could bring great players from different Eras together to compete against each another. I especially would have loved to see a few more great matches between Steffi Graf vs Serena Williams. They only played twice but both matches went 3 sets, 7-5 in the 3rd to the winner & they split the 2 matches. And matter that Steffi was a veteran & Serena was a rookie when they played vs one another, they both were/are extremely competitive champions & incredible athletes.

    • @fundhund62
      @fundhund62 7 років тому +4

      +Steven Michael Don´t forget Martina and Steffi had a pretty even h2h record, though. Considering Martina was way past her prime in most of those matches, for all we know we have to conclude that Martina was actually the greater champion. Her overall record also confirms that (59 Grand Slam titles to Steffi´s 23).

    • @th8257
      @th8257 7 років тому +7

      fundhund62 well that's the big debate, and I think it's always going to be subjective. You could argue that many of their early matches were when Steffi was nowhere near her best. Also Chris evert and Billy Jean King rated Steffi higher than Martina. All depends on your own personal opinion.

    • @fundhund62
      @fundhund62 7 років тому +1

      I actually don´t care who is "rated higher". The previous comment just sounded like Martina couldn´t handle Steffi´s game, and I just wanted to provide some facts to counter that impression. Although Martina was clearly behind her prime by the time 1988 rolled around, she could still hang with Steffi, and even beat her as late as 1993!
      If there was one year when both were close to their best form, it was 1987, when they were 2-2, but Martina beat Steffi in two of their three Slam finals.

    I wonder how steffi would have done if she'd been able to play Wimbledon in 1986. Very difficult to say - she was clearly improving massively but there were also still many serve and volleyers who could trouble her backhand, and she was still inexperienced on grass. I think Martina would have been too strong and I'm trying to think who else may have beaten her.

    Martina is frustrated. She is being outplayed by a future major rival and she knows how dangerous Graf is already by looking at her rise in the ranking and recent victory over Evert, but whats worse, she is two weeks away from playing RG and she is nowhere near where she needs to be in her preparation for that event. This is not the kind of tennis that she afford to play to beat Evert. As fate would have it, Martina was not particularly glorious in a tight two setter in the QF against Rinaldi, and she had more trouble against Sukova in the semis of RG who took her to three sets. Graf lost to Hana in the Quarters of the French.
