    Hello HJ. I just seen on Instagram that the views for this video were not favorable and that it might be the last of it's kind. It is a shame since it gave a little bit of spice to the channel. I understand numbers rule in the eyes of the U-tube gods, but I think that your loyal followers would agree that this is a fun, light hearted video that gets enjoyed. Do your true fans a favor and have a "Cool, or not cool" part 3. This gives you an opportunity to showcase and display your collection. Great video. The banter between you and Helen is priceless. Keep them coming my friend.

    This video was definitely cool! It was fun to watch you and Helen determine the coolness (or lack thereof) regarding each pen. I was happy to see the Lamy 2000 receive the cool-factor it deserves. However, I must say I was saddened to see the lever-action Conway Stewart relegated to the "not cool" side of the table; but that's all part of the fun. Great video, Hemingway and Helen.

Incredibly fond of you both, and really enjoy your videos with Helen in them...especially, the ones that feature her (Cool or Not Cool 1, & 2). I was scared to hear what she thought of the Lamy 2000....but it turns out she really does have good taste! I was also interested in her opinion of the Aurora Optima. I didn't like the appearance of that model with the black cap. So I agree with her! And, sorry, I agree with her on the Waterman Charleston!
    Seeing the vintage pen was fun. I really would be curious about her reaction to a lot of vintage pens!

    What are her preferred fountain pens?

      Hello Jason! Thanks for watching this! So, the zooms were done in edits just to give some variety to the side by side one camera shoot. I think they worked out well.

    Your wife is a lovely lady, and I really enjoy seeing you two on screen together! But she is NOT right about everything! Cool is in the eye of the beholder, and you two don't share an aesthetic. For the next one can I suggest that you each have a cool and not cool pile, and shared/agreed upon cool and not cool sections. So we get to see what you both agree on, and where you differ. You defer to her almost always, which is sweet, but I'd like to see both of your opinions given equal weight. And then we also get to see the MOST uncool and the MOST cool pens at the end.

    Helen wins again (mostly)! But "cool" has more to do with a combination of esthetic design and uniqueness. But if you use pens to write daily, the quality of the nib and its shape and markings counts a lot, even if the pen body itself is not cool. Also how smoothly the overall function of the pen as well as the nib. Example: A Montblanc 146 is not "cool" but it is very well made and it writes beautifully. Contrast that with a Montblanc Boheme, which has an exceptional attention to detail, with a retractable excellent nib. When retracted most Boheme models appear smaller than average pen size, but the cap attaches to the back of the barrel with metal threads (not plastic), giving it extra length and "in hand" feeling. Once you've attached the cap to the back of the barrel, you extend the nib by turning the cap clockwise, and retract it by turning it counter-clockwise. The action is smooth. When you remove the cap from the barrel to re-attach and close the pen, there is a small pin mechanism inside the cap that prevents accidentally damaging the nib if you forgot to retract the nib first.
    Because the size of the pen is smaller when the nib is retracted and closed, it is a cartridge only pen, using standard size Montblanc ink cartridges. So how do you remove and install an ink cartridge when you know the retracted nib mechanism takes up space inside the barrel? And of course you don't want to remove the nib or damage the internal retractable nib mechanism. Answer: The end cap of the barrel is really a hinge with a tiny metal knob that you flick to open the cartridge chamber. You don't have to force it open or find it's too loose and opens by itself, it's just right. That exposes the inserted ink cartridge, and at first glance you ask yourself how the hell am I going to remove a firmly inserted cartridge packed tight inside? Answer: When the hinge cap is open, you gently twist the barrel counter-clockwise and it forces the cartridge out of the chamber. To insert a new cartridge you gently insert it partially, then gently twist the barrel clockwise which fully inserts the cartridge and pricks a small hole in the business end of the cartridge so the ink flows to the nib. Note: The barrel twist mechanism only works when the hinged end cap is open, and only a light touch is required to smoothly twist the barrel in either direction. Once you flick the end hinge cap closed, the barrel will not rotate.
    Now if all that detail and smooth precision isn't cool, I don't know what is. It's compact when closed and larger with the nib extended and the cap screwed on the metal threads at the end of the barrel. Montblanc made the Boheme in variety of different colors, materials and textures, but sadly discontinued it about 20 years ago. They can still be readily found for sale on the secondary market in exceptional, mint or even NOS condition. Most Boheme models were the smaller size, with a medium size available, and only a few full-sized models produced. Be prepared, because they're not inexpensive used (like it or hate it, Montblanc pens are expensive), and the price depends on condition and model. The gold nibs came in fine, medium and broad.
    And what's also very cool about your "Cool Or Not Cool" segments is the wonderful way you both love and respect each other!

    • @HemingwayJones
      @HemingwayJones  9 місяців тому

      Ah, the Boheme! I have had my eye on that one for a long time. You make it sound elegantly refined! I saw one on Peyton St and it got by me. Very disappointed.

    aha! yes lamy 2000 is cool in a plain no frills way I agree... still a bit dull... I know it's Bauhaus and all but it still makes me wonder.... I will never buy it though! have twsbi eco in baby pink, mint green and cream... if I get the baby blue I'm done! no they aren't cool but they are sweet and look cute especially as a little herd... agree with your wife the blue bronze ain't cool... but I still love twsbi I enjoyed this 😂❤

  • @michaeldavis9693
    @michaeldavis9693 4 місяці тому

    I’m going to argue for the TWSBI Eco and say, it’s the Any Warhol of pens. It’s a pop insta-classic. They’re a beautiful modern design and people can’t stop looking at them and you want them all. It’s not a classic master like Rembrandt but it holds its own against those old vintage timeless designs by dead people. When the topi can of pens comes up, TWSBI Eco is at every party. Whenever you pull one out, people’s eyes get wide and ask what it is. It’s the young street artist who’s breaking the mold and king of the current scene. It’s cool as a cucumber. It’s not one of those reverent classic oil paintings.. it’s new. It’s fresh. It’s pop art.

    Great video! But you knew it would spark controversy among your viewers. I agree with you on the Montblanc 146 and the Lamy. I struggled a bit with the Omas Ogiva, but then . . . Really? Really? The Conway Stewart Churchill is not cool and the Jinhao Giganta is cool? Really? 🤣

    My wife rated Sailor Progear Slim Mini “Not cool”, but Jinhao 82 Mini “Cool” !
    Former has 14K nib and costs $100+ and the latter is the clone (of the former) and costs $6 !

    I disagree about the Aurora, not because of its color, but because, as a writer, i love how the Aurora feel and write. (I do understand that you originally had issues with the nib, but that's never happened to me.)

    I'm very standoffish about the Full Metal Jacket because it requires a separate tool (key) to operate the piston filling system. What if the key becomes misplaced?

    • @HemingwayJones
      @HemingwayJones  9 місяців тому +2

      I agree with you that the key is a bit much. I think a pen should be self contained. However, you really don’t need the key to fill it. It just makes it easier and more enjoyable. It turns fine without it. Thanks for watching!

    Your wife is charming, the banter was engaging, I felt some anxious anticipation to hear the verdict on each pen. I liked the video. I don't understand your criteria for "cool", though. "Cool", "beautiful", "interesting", "original" - there may be some overlap between these words, sometimes not. I know what _I_ think is cool, but I have a hard time explaining it. Attitude, style and originality all come into play, along with a je ne sais quoi that I can only know when I see it. I hate the Lamy 2000 and I hate Bauhaus, but there's a cool factor there that I can't deny. The TWSBI is like cargo pants - splendid for what it does, but with all the style of a pair of Crocs (which are also splendid for what they do, but they're cool like a well-designed and properly functioning septic system is cool). I love some things that I think are decidedly not cool. I'm flummoxed about why Helen thinks the Conway Stewart is not cool, though. It checks all the right boxes for me; I'd like to know which boxes it failed to check for her.

      Thanks so much for watching. These videos are all done in good fun. We made some attempt at defining “cool” in the first one and mostly adhered to it. More than anything, it is an opportunity for us to chat about pens. As for the Conway Stewart though, she thinks that anything that is in that traditional tortoise pattern is uncool. She sees it as stodgy and old fashioned. Me, and perhaps you, disagree with that, and that’s what makes it a lot of fun. She is also very compelling each time. She has excellent reasons. Thanks again for watching.

      @@HemingwayJones I've been editing too many theses this week and briefly forgot the difference between a research paper and something done in fun. At this time of the semester, I'm definitely no fun!
      I think that there's a big difference between old fashioned and classic. Tortoise shell patterns are classic, not old fashioned or stodgy! They're like herringbone tweed. If I lived in the Northeast, I'd be wearing a lot of (IMO) cool tweed jackets. Alas, when I moved from Moscow and DC to Louisiana, I gave all my tweed coats and jackets away. Here they'd just be moth food.

      @@jamespicht1128 My love for Tweed and woo in general is well documented here. I have 2 three piece Tweed suits and many sport coats, all of which are sealed in garment bags. Another thing with me is if I am in “Work Mode” and I shift to UA-cam, my responses are far too serious. I need to decompress. Have a nice Weekend My Friend.

    Why on Earth would you show me the Opus 88 Medusa, why would you do that to me? I own a Lamy 2000 and not cool in my opinion. Own a Mont Blanc 146 and it is kind of cool except for the baby bottom. I do not like the way my Pelikan m-605 writes. Ok TWSBI Eco own a few and very cool for the price it writes very nice. Thank you for the fun video.

    I think you should be careful to not conflate 'cool' with 'I like it'. For example, Lamy 2000, I don't like it, but it's certainly very cool, IMO. This time, I found myself agreeing half the way again, but then something happened.
    Things I'd disagree with, this time, is Tom's Studio Pocket Pen. Sorry, I don't think it's particularly cool. The TWSBI Eco, I'm not yet a fan, but it is cool. Conway Stewart Churchill, extremely cool. Chinese pens are never cool. You're allowed to like them and they may be good, but not cool.

      This was so much fun! I loved hearing Helen’s take on your collection. The Lamy 2k is definitely cool. I’d be curious to hear her opinion on the Lamy Studio (hopefully a special color elevates the pen), the Dialog CC (great wet writer because of the gold nib) and the Imporium.

    I throw up a little in my mouth everytime I hear "Bauhaus design." It just SO overused, IMO, in the fountain pen world.
    And the 2000, just a pregnant piston filled Parker 45, isn't it? Much of LAMY from the 1960s is very derivative of the 45. Even the converter for the cartridge converter pens is ultimately the same as the Eversharp/Parker design, sometimes even interchangeable.
    Good thing there's enough out there that everyone can have their own opinion. 😁
    The clip on your Vacumatic is easy to straighten, even without removing it. Bamboo skewer, pressure... 👍 Done it with very stiff through even a basically sheet metal Esterbrook "Dollar" pen clip. Like any vintage repairs, be patient. It's really an easy thing to do. Or, they do unscrew for even more intricate work.
    And what's not to like for the Jinhao pens you showed? Best bang for your buck out there.
    Fun going through pens regularly. Makes you remember those you may have forgotten recently, helps decision making.

      What a vulgar phrase you have there. Not at all overused in regards to the Lamy 2000. It was literally the point of it. Other pens, yes. Absolutely. Not this one. Thanks for the tip n the Vacumatic. I probably should fix it. We’ve been through so much together. Thanks so much for watching.

    That Medusa pen is SUPER cool. Cool color, literally, since it looks like ice, and I especially like the crystal clear finials, the snkes are cool, (and nothing sensless was addeded to ruin it which IMO happens too often), and of course, the ancient Greek theme is what seals the deal because I think ancient Greece is cool. I searched online because I'd actually shelll out the cash for that one but that pen is so "cool" it's no longer available for sale.
