There's 2 things I think you might have missed here (I only learned about them from another youtuber and I have one of the dang things!) and those are:
    1. the strap: you can put your hand through that and open the journal to write in. It lets you hold it open and be a stable writing surface if you're outdoors or just don't have a surface to write on
    2. the clasp: there's a loop on the inside of the back cover so you can attach the clasp and then cinch it down. That's nice so you don't have the thing sliding around and being noisy.
Also I paused to skulk your book shelves. That is a very impressive collection! Always trust someone with that 2nd Edition Riverside Shakespeare. I carried that around for at least 2 semesters in college!

Is there any way to put in a custom request for one of your journals? I'm looking for something almost like this, but with an interior color that doesn't stand out so much. Also, a ranger-green version would be nice.

  • @JonDiPietro

With regard to the bookmark straps: You don't need to cut them. You can pull them out of the eyelets on the spine of the journal. Same with the elastic notebook straps. You can untie them and pull them out if you don't need them.

I've had this journal and their dot grid Tomoe River notebooks for over 3 years now. Absolutely love it. And I do carry 4 notebooks within, each for different tasks. I use mine outdoors everyday for work, and it's held up beautifully down in the southern New Mexico desert. I actually added an additional ribbon so i have a page marker in all 4 notebooks. Highly recommend! I'm sure it'll get plenty of use for you, HJ.

Lochby has sent their products to so many people, I don't know how the company is staying afloat. They sent one of those to my daughter, some time ago. It does seem like it's nicely organized and sturdy, and it attracts attention everywhere she takes it. Nice review, HJ.

The Field Journal is a really cool addition to a backpack or day bag.
The ribbons aren't sewn in, by the way, they just thread through grommets. Easily removed or put back as the mood strikes you. Or, you could add a second ribbon for four bookmarks.
I suspect the upcoming Lochby Mini Journal will be another requisite for the properly provisioned voyage of discovery. You know, like going to the grocery store for milk. You never know when ancient vortices of timeless evil will reawaken.
The most intrepid will always be lost in such circumstances absent a rugged journal and a well tuned pen.

As always, thanks for a thoughtful review. I've had this Lochby journal cover for some time. In my experience, just about any A5 journal will fit. As you say, high quality and lots of options. I thought I'd mention a bit of history:
Lochby rebranded themselves from Bond Travel Gear, quite a while back. The Bond journal cover was a very similar the current one, but made of nylon with a YKK zipper closure all round instead of the aluminum hook and loop they use now. Interior was also similar but designed to hold one A5 journal. Mine came with the Bond A5 hard cover journal with 68gsm Tomoe River paper with a 5mm dot grid. I've been pleased with both Lochby and Bond and have used them for years. In my experience these folks have always been committed to making quality products from durable materials.

Probably the wrong question to ask but is there any black fountain pen ink that can be used on cheap, three-ring binder paper that'll still be black and not look dark gray when held/written on in the light? By cheap, three-ring binder paper, I mean the kind sold in Walmart. Every pen I have is equipped with a medium nib.

Jetpens recommends Platinum Carbon Black with warnings it can be difficult to clean out of a pen. They also recommend J. Herbin Perle Noire, which is said to be gentler on pens.
I have a bottle of Diamine Jet Black. I haven't had it in a pen for a while now, but my recollection is it yielded a well defined line out of a fine nib, more so out of wider nibs. It probably worked well on modest paper. That's about all I get.

@@johnnyragadoo2414 No offense intended, but you're confusing Platinum Carbon Black - easy to flush out - with Platinum's Chou Kuro; that stuff has to be flushed out with distilled water because it forms tiny clots and threads because of the minerals in ordinary tap water.
That's what I've seen and read online, anyway. I use Carbon Black; it's no problem to use.

DeAtramentis Document Black seems well spoken of. I believe it's waterproof, so there might be cleaning issues.
Ink is a melancholy topic this evening. I put another empty bottle away. That makes 80 ml of Cult Pens Michael (dark blue), 80 ml of Diamine Oxford Blue, and the latest casualty, 40 ml of Diamine Blue Velvet, all since I adopted the way of nibs and ink stains.
