This was back before it was commonplace for Oregon to be in the national spotlight, in fact, a lot of people thought that it was a once-in-a-lifetime thing, to see Oregon playing in the Rose Bowl at the time.
Jerry Allen, Oregon’s longtime radio announcer, once said that when he walked into the broadcast booth that day and saw the yellow and green ‘OREGON’ logo emblazoned on the far endzone, he broke down. He never imagined he’d get to see the “little ‘ol” Oregon Ducks play in the Rose Bowl. Nowadays, the Rose Bowl probably feels like settling for less for a lot of Oregon fans lol. It’s natty or bust.

The 1994 Nittany Lions are probably the last great top-level CFB team to come out of the Northeast. While Penn State has had 5 top 10 finishes since then (plus one from Boston College in 2007), none of those teams was close to being in national championship contention by the end of the season.
I played with Ki-Jana in Westerville OH. Pop Warner Bengals. You couldn't stop him then either. Seriously. This Penn State team was at least co-national champs this year without a doubt.
If you want to know when it all started for Oregon football and the success they have today, it all started with this game. I understand Oregon lost the game but it showed talented kids all over the country that Oregon is a winning program and that they need to come to Eugene. Oregon just got better and better and better as the years went by and this game is really is the genesis of how it all got going.
I believe in my hearts of hearts that this Penn St team would have beaten Nebraska or Miami for the national championship had they played..Nebraska would not recovered after spotting Penn St a 10 point lead then come back and win as they did against Miami our offense was way to high powered..and in the case of Miami..as talented as they were..they were also an undisciplined football program we would have outplayed them our coaching staff would have out coached them just as we did them in The Fiesta Bowl in 1987..Vinnie Testavere had a slim chance..but Frank Costa would had no chance
This was my senior year at PSU. So many memories PSU fans took a charter flight from Philadelphia and picked up a bunch of fellow knuckleheads in Harrisburg on our way to California. Had a great time at Disneyland letting blue and white fans cut in line in front of green and yellow fans - the whole week was like that! PSU Was the real champ that year as Joe Paterno has a ‘ national champions’ sign on the stadium for the 94-95 season! Best ever!
I was on that charter flight! I was 14- first time ever going to LA. We stayed in a hotel that was walking distance from where the team was staying, and we went over and met them as they came from morning practice. Absolutely amazing experience!
I'm a FSU fan. And actually despised Penn State well before this year. That being said, they absolutely deserved a shot. That offense was sick. Keith Jackson's call on that Ki Jana Carter run will always be one of my favorite. "They had him. They thought. And then he was gone."
Ah, the good old days: barely any internet, no smartphones, people watched TV, read the newspaper and listened to the radio, kids went to public schools, Oregon had normal uniforms ... I mean, the list goes on.
I would have loved to have seen 1994 Penn State and 1994 Nebraska play each other. Both fanbases naturally think their team would've won it, but the sad truth is, there's no way to know. I'm a Penn State fan so I'm a bit biased in thinking PSU would have gotten it done, but again, there's no way to know. Some Nebraska fans have unfairly compared this team to the 1994 Colorado team and some Penn State fans have unfairly compared that Nebraska team to Ohio State or Oregon. The truth is, those were the two best teams in college football that year and it's a real shame they never got to settle it on the field and 23 years later we still talk about who would've won. At least in 1997 they got it right and split the national title between Michigan and Nebraska.
Funny how the whole argument in 1994 was "Tom Osborne doesnt have a title, Joe has a couple, so lets give it to Tom", but in 1997 they werent saying "Lloyd Carr doesnt have one, Tom has a couple, lets give it to Lloyd". Oh no, Nebraska got a share of that one. For anyone that says Oregon put up a fight and Penn State didnt win convincingly, Nebraska had to come back and hang on against a good, but not GREAT 10-1 Miami Hurricanes team. So that argument is BS as well. PSU deserved a share of the title...period.
ESPN and others have said the 1994 PSU offense is arguably the best O in the history of college football. The Husker D while very good was not on that level. The average scoring drive time of that PSU offense was less that 2 minutes. This meant the D was on the field a lot. The starting O was usually sitting on the bench after a few sets into the 3rd quarter of most games and they still averaged 48 points per game. Look at strength of schedule that year, etc. The list goes on.
I stopped watching college football after this game. It was a joke that two best teams (by far) did not play each other for the national championship. To see the most complete Penn State team in history be wasted on the meaningless Rose Bowl was an absolute travesty.
I love Penn State and the 1995 Rose Bowl win is one of my most favorite experiences in my life. However, I must admit that I become ill when they show Jerry Sandusky in this video. Those poor kids. May Jerry rot in prison and then in Hell.
Penn State should officially claim the 1994 title. They have a legal right to do it is even in the NCAA record book. Other schools have done it as well even though they didn’t win the AP or other major polls decades ago. Even Alabama claims a title when they didn’t finish near the top in 1941.
Too bad Penn State and Nebraska couldn’t have met. Fair or not, the last straw for Penn State’s title hopes came when they allowed Indiana to score two late, garbage TDs, to make a blow-out appear close.
Maximus Wolfe They averaged 47 points a game, produced a 1,000-yard rusher and 1,000-yard receiver in the same season, produced five outings of 50 points or more, their lowest-scoring performance came against Michigan, but they still posted 31 points and won and they scored a season-high 63 points against Ohio State. These statistics told the tale about the Nittany Lions 1994 resume.
Ethan Swiech Carter, Archie, Whitman, Brady, Jurevicious, Engram, Collins. These guys would've put about 40 points on Nebraska in their sleep that year. Should have never come to this. Should've allowed the 2 to war it out on the field, a game PSU would have won.
Yes, I agree, they should've let Penn State and Nebraska settle the score that year. Two undefeated teams in the prime time spotlight, you couldn't ask for anything more. I think beating a three-loss team in the Rose Bowl hurt PSU's chances at the national title. When Nebraska faced Miami in the Orange Bowl, the Canes only had one loss to their resume going into the game. But PSU and Braska would've been a much better matchup.
No way that 1 dimensional Nebraska option offense could have kept pace with this offense. I see the score something like 34-24/35-27. Unless they had the type of 1'st half they had against Illinois. Then Nebraska had the type of team that could run down the clock and sit on a lead.
@@lainiwakura4678 They could keep pace because Nebraska's defense was a lot better than Penn State's defense. You can't just compare the offenses and ignore the defenses.
@@dadestarmysteries255 I don't know if I would say "a lot" better. Even if better on paper, no body could adjust mid-game like the Lions. Nevertheless it would have been a great match-up, probably coming down to 1 or 2 key special team blunders or turnovers.

Penn state's defense would've been pushed around the field. Nebraska pushed around the heralded Miami defense late. Nebraska also shut down Colorado's offense, which was much more potent than Penn State. Would've loved to see them meet.

Look the only thing PSU got robbed of was a SPLIT natl title. Im no Neb fan but 2 undefeated teams that were really good...PSU didnt get robbed of anything more than a split. (I grew up liking PSU...im being unbiased)
Penn State should officially claim the 1994 National championship. Other schools and programs have done it decades after the season was played. Penn state should as well. They should also claim the 1911,1912,and 1969 titles as well. That way Penn State should have as many as Ohio State. Alabama did it after Bear Bryant died in the 80s to keep more interest in Alabama and to still get big recruits. They only claimed the ones Bear Bryant won but also added a few more before Bear Bryant was there. So technically Penn State has a legal claim for those national titles as well as the 1994 title as well.
Every time I see Phil Yeboah-Kodie just storm past the Oregon O-Line, I get the laughs and giggles because who in the world is blocking him. Plus our offense in 1994 was loaded with talent. Its a shame that they gave the title to Tom Ozbourne and Nebraska because "they never won the title, lets give it to a team that never won over JoePa." And thats where our victim complex started. But who cares we went 12-0. WE ARE!
Penn state was better than Nebraska this year. They averaged over seven yards a play in a conference that at the time, was much better than than Nebraskan. Nebraska squeaks by Miami and penn state beats down a very good pad team, the last touchdown was just a formality. They should have shared the way 97 Michigan shared. That said, Nebraska 95 was the best football team I have ever personally seen. Also, lol Sandusky at 7:28.

I've never seen a better college football team robbed of a national championship. And to who? Nebraska? That Lions team would've wiped the floor with them. And Tom Osborne knew it. Nice to see Nebraska consistently sucking now, enjoy the corn
Did Ohio State play Penn State that year? If they did I'm sure Penn State crushed them. This team was just flat out good that year. Not sure how people are saying Miami would have beaten them. And didn't Miami play Penn State in the late 80's and lost and no one gave them a chance to beat Miami.
From a Husker fan: I believe that it should have been a split NC. PSU had a great team. Offensively, PSU had great weapons. I wish we could have seen a Husker vs. PSU championship. The lack of this game led up to the bowl alliance. With that said, I still think NU beats Penn St.
Hate Penn State, but this is why we needed a playoff, or at worst, something similar to the BCS sooner. I knew someone on this team, graduated high school with his daughter two years ago.
I don't blame the polls i blame the big 10 conference. You have a team that goes undefeated and you want let them go play in the championship game??? They have to go keep up tradition and play in a (for them) meaning less rose bowl game?? Makes no sense. Nebraska was more then willing to break with the big 8's tradition of going to the Orange bowl to have a #1 vs #2 match up of Nebraska and Penn State. The Big Ten would not let it's champion go to another bowl other than the Rose even though it meant forfeiting a chance to win it all.
Nebraska would have gotten their asses kicked if they played Penn St. in 95', but because soooo many analyst hate the Penn St. football program, they didn't even let #1 (Nebraska) play #2 (Penn St.) for the championship. Now, for some reason, Nebraska is in the Big 10. College football rankings won't mean shit until next year when they finally implement the playoff system.
Penn st couldn't play anywhere but the Rose. They were tied in. Didn't beat a team that finished with less than 3 losses (one team). Nebraska would have worn their asses out
I loved how the broadcaster called us "the future of America"...and we did think we were. I'd love to see what he may have thought if he saw last evenings "Democratic National Debate"?????
Oregon OL: Ughhh, we have another game? COACHH! COACHH! Do we have to PLAYYYYY? Coach: Uh yeah, its the Rose Bowl Oregon OL (In Cartman voices): But MEEEM!!!!!!!!!
@BassAssassin9 You don't support the program, you support your insistence that YOU'RE right and everybody else is wrong. You don't support the program, you criticize one man as if he's the only reason we win or lose, as if by magic JoePa and all his decisions are the ONLY deciding factor in whether Penn State wins or loses or is competitive, which is another baloney assertion on your part. Don't tell me what I support, don't have the arrogant presumption to speak for me.
I honestly don't feel sorry for Penn State. The Big Ten was so stubborn to keep their Rose Bowl Game with the Pac 12. It seem more important to them then a National Championship. Penn State knew this going into Big Ten. Got what you deserved.
Of all the great PSU teams over the years, this one certainly had the worst defense. Good lord in heaven. If we had faced '94 Nebraska, our offense would've needed to play the perfect game, scoring points on every drive, or else they would've "clocked" us to death with their run game and never let our offense on the field.
@BassAssassin9 Research my butt. You just can't accept that under Tressel and Ferentz, Ohio State and Iowa have been some of the most competitive football programs in the country. Your "research" (read: constant worthless whining) is nothing more than old, tired crap against JoePa. The most legendary coach in college football. JoePa's coaching had nothing to do with the losses to Ohio State or Iowa. We didn't take care of business, and it falls on the players-not JoePa-to go out and win games.
As much as I hate to say this Nebraska earned that national championship. They played more ranked teams (5) compared to Penn State's (4). Nebraska played the number 2 Colorado and then in the Orange Bowl number 3 Miami. I mean this is even before the BCS or the playoff system, but back then the Big 10 would always send someone to the Rose Bowl to face the Pac 10 no matter what. So even if Penn State wanted to play in the Orange Bowl they couldn't since they won they won the Big 10. Now if that were 1986 when Penn State was independent, then yes they could have been invited to the Orange Bowl to face the #1 team. Either way Nebraska was the correct pick because the next season Nebraska just crushed everyone and destroyed #2 Florida for the national championship in the Fiesta Bowl.
PSU's strength of schedules was 8th nationally as compared to Nebraska's 40th nationally. Colorado had a good team that year but that was the only real test Nebraska had that year in a Big 8 that was very much down in the 90s because of mediocre Texas and Oklahoma teams. The only reason Colorado was #2 at the time they played NU was because of their miracle last second hail mary against Michigan earlier that year in a game Michigan looked like the better team all game but let Colorado hang around until that last second hail mary.
uhhhh negative....70th ranked defense?woulda liked to see Joe's scholars against the #1 ranked defense in all categories in Miami.....I wont even get into what nebraskas offense woulda done to this BELOW AVERAGE DEFENSE
We beat #3 Colorado 24-7 earlier in the year, beat down #8 Kansas st by 20 and then beat #3 Miami IN miami at night. Miami had not lost a home night game in 11 years and only lost 1 game at home in 15 years! We were clearly the better team!
Nebraska goes into the Orange Bowl to take on #3 Miami where the Canes hadn't lost a night game in over ten years and beats the u by 7 and Penn St struggles against a mediocre at best Oregon team yet you think Penn St got the shaft? Get real man!

Did Ohio State play Penn State that year? If they did I'm sure Penn State crushed them. This team was just flat out good that year. Not sure how people are saying Miami would have beaten them. And didn't Miami play Penn State in the late 80's and lost and no one gave them a chance to beat Miami.
Yes, 63-14
From a Husker fan: I believe that it should have been a split NC. PSU had a great team. Offensively, PSU had great weapons. I wish we could have seen a Husker vs. PSU championship. The lack of this game led up to the bowl alliance. With that said, I still think NU beats Penn St.
Man. Oregon really needs to go back to these uniforms.
THERE GO KI-JANA 1:39
Look at oregon's uniforms they are regular looking just like their game plan
That was a brutal game...looking back, we had no chance
Must've been tough playing that game knowing there was no shot at a national title after Nebraska settled it in Miami the night before.
The O-line sucked for Oregon in this game.
Nebraska would have worn their asses out
Crapola! Nebraska didn't settle anything in Miami. Penn State got robbed again going undefeated and winning their bowl game.
my health teacher plaed in this game
Oregon may have lost but gues who has the better dynasty and reputation now
lol Oregon was never a dynasty wtf
@theman55able
For PSU or Oregon.
Coach: Uh yeah, its the Rose Bowl
Oregon OL (In Cartman voices): But MEEEM!!!!!!!!!
Yes they did , ROBBED
Two of the classiest programs...Sandusky appears
Yea Penn State beat them 63-14, and it could have been worse.
Don't tell me what I support, don't have the arrogant presumption to speak for me.
win*
Is that why every National writer OUTSIDE OF LINCOLN voted us No. 1???
I was born 13 days after this rosebowl game. 1/14/95 Go Ducks.
Theres the dikhed
you're mad...hahahahahaha get over it ENIS.
@BassAssassin9
they still won regardless... the fact is he should've been out years ago but it'll happen when it happens.
Go Ducks
Yes i believe so. He's a sick fuck, but was a hell of a coach when it came to winning.
@8:15 Jerry Sandusky made some adjustments... Joe Paterno did nothing.
Winning isn't worth that much. Any one of those young boys is worth more than that. Without a doubt PSU would of had a great team without him.
actually....only people in Pa think that....bunch of scholars gonna go bang with Nebraska + the U??lucky for you guys you didn't have to play them....
PSU's SOS was 8'th. SRS 1'st. Nebraska ranked 40'th and 4'th comparatively. This narrative is just not true.
uhhhh negative....70th ranked defense?woulda liked to see Joe's scholars against the #1 ranked defense in all categories in Miami.....I wont even get into what nebraskas offense woulda done to this BELOW AVERAGE DEFENSE
We beat #3 Colorado 24-7 earlier in the year, beat down #8 Kansas st by 20 and then beat #3 Miami IN miami at night. Miami had not lost a home night game in 11 years and only lost 1 game at home in 15 years! We were clearly the better team!
completely disagree! I lived in Nebraska that year and there is no way in hell with that blackshirt defense and Tommy Frazier at QB you win. No Way
Huskers win hands down
Nebraska goes into the Orange Bowl to take on #3 Miami where the Canes hadn't lost a night game in over ten years and beats the u by 7 and Penn St struggles against a mediocre at best Oregon team yet you think Penn St got the shaft? Get real man!
Struggled?
