I love your historical videos, particularly those about the Civil War. My Great Grandfather and his brother were in the 58th Indiana and were a part of the Battles in Chickamauga and Chattanooga. My GGfather was wounded in the Battle at Missionary Ridge. He was treated at a Field Hospital and returned to his unit. You are probably already familiar with John Hight's book on the history of the 58th Indiana. That was more than likely a spring that they had cleaned out around and built the cistern type holding tank. If you saw no water coming out of the rock or a pipe they had installed it maybe has dried up. That is my best thought Thanks for videos, they are interesting
My wife and I spent a week running around that mountain after we got married on September 3rd 1983 my wife died 2yrs ago and this brought back memories and made me cry, I miss her but I will always have her in my heart until we meet again in heaven 👍🏻✌🏻♥️
I was raised in Rossville, Ga. I could see the Castle in the Clouds from by bedroom window. The Chicamauga National Park was literally connected to my back yard. My 2 times great grandfather father, Samuel Chase Woodfin, fought both in the battle of Chicamauga and Missionary Ridge. My grandparents, parents, uncles, and cousins are buried in the National Cemetery in Chattanooga. A member of my family on the Woodfin side has fought in every War this country has fought in beginning with the Revolutionary War. My great grandmother's father, Amos Henry Castle fought for the the Union Army. Samuel Chase Woodfin was my great grandfather's dad. I love my family history.

My great grandfather, Oliver Woodfin was the son of Samuel Chase Woodfin. My grandmother spoke of a Uncle Jasper. I would have to go into my Ancestry.com file to really find out if her father had a brother named Jasper. Samuel Chase had many children. By chance are you a descendant of Moses Woodfin. I know he was captured at Missionary Ridge and sent to the POW' camp in Rock Island, Illinois. Google the "Woodfin Boys of Rutherford County". I also discovered we are descendants of John Woodfin, one of three Woodfin brothers that came to America in 1722, to James River area of Virginia. He was shot at the age of 57 yrs old by Indians as he crossed his field. John's son, Reverend Samuel Woodfin, (Nicholas Woodfin's father) started the Muddy Creek Baptist Church near Williamsburg, Virginia. Samuel's father, Nicholas Woodfin fought in the Revolutionary War with George Washington and the War of 1812 with Andrew Jackson. Nicholas is buried in the Woodfin Cemetary near Murfreesboro. His marker has an emblem on it for the Revolutionary War. You can also Google the Woodfin Cemetary, Rutherford County Tennessee. We have such a rich family history of members Colonizing the USA and defending our Freedom. I'm very proud of our heritage.

I have been to this Battlefield twice and am shocked every time i go because of the pure tenacity and Will power the Union troops had to assault and eventually take lookout mountain. Its one of my favorite battlefields for sure. Did you know that during the battle of lookout mountain when Grant arrived he was spotted by Confederate Forces across the Tennessee River and instead of being fired upon the Confederate Forces Saluted him and Grant always said that he wished he had soldiers just like those that saluted him and braved coming out in the open to render a salute. Absolutely amazing little stories.

I used to play in those woods as a kid and never really appreciated the history there till I got older. Would love to run a metal detector around there!
The History Underground Don’t be tempted. You can’t technically even have a metal detector in your trunk when you are on National Battlefield grounds. They can confiscate it, your vehicle, and put you in jail.
U.S. Pro Cycling National Championships were in Chattanooga in 2014 and 2015. We love riding and racing up Lookout Mountain. We did get to check out the Civil War National Park on top of Lookout Mountain., but did not have time to see much more. Looking forward to go back in the future and this time seeing more history.

HOME!!!! Indeed we have heavy fog anytime of the year up here. And indeed sometimes we are above the clouds. If you do not feel like hiking up there is a very cool funicular railway which will take up all the way up from the valley. Lookout Mountain takes its name from the fact that you can see seven states from it.

Very nice job - enjoyed it. I was able to stand upon Lookout Point looking down on Moccasin Bend and Chattanooga twice in my life (Wisconsin person). It was the first Civil War site in a long line of visits to many battlefields over the years. Anyway the second time up there my wife accepted my marriage proposal and it's now 31 years later. It'll always hold a special place for me - not only as a Civil War crazed individual but as a happily married man.

This is the only UA-cam channel I support through Patreon...this video is the perfect example of why.. You do a fantastic job of explaining the landmarks and give a general description of the places that you visit without going into a long drawn out explanation of what happened there..Thank you JD for visiting Lookout Mtn, I had wanted to tour the battlefield the day after my visit to Chickamauga but the weather turned bad. If you have not toured Chickamauga that is one awesome battlefield. More cannon than I have ever seen in one place in my lifetime.

That path with the stairs going up to the pipe coming out of the rock looks like what was built for public access to natural springs up in the White Mountains here. You could refill your canteens or get a drink there. The one you showed looks like it has not been maintained, but you can see the water flowing out on the rocks all around you, so the spring is probably still there.
My family is related to Braxton Bragg, he was my Dad's 2nd. cousin. My maiden name is Bragg. My Dad was born in 1903 in Chattanooga. His family used to frequently have Sunday afternoon outings on Lookout Mountain. He told me on one of the outings he found a Confederate kepi and a belt in a hollow tree. He had it for years but doesn't know what happened to it once he married and moved out of his parents home.
After accompanying a middle school boys’ choir on the piano as they sang a song “Battle Above the Clouds,” this was on my bucket list of places to visit. I was able to go there in 2021 with my 14 year old son and walked the very same path that you took through the woods from Craven’s house. I enjoyed your video immensely.

I grew up as a teenager on Signal Mountain and always knew the deep history of that area. My mother knows so much history of that, and the surrounding areas. Spent a lot of time outdoors in that entire area and miss it greatly. Lived on Missionary Ridge as well. It’s such a beautiful area and, geographically speaking, is laid out so beautifully. This is such a great video. Thanks for your time and research on it.
Growing up in Chattanooga , it's easy to take all of these things around us for granted. But there really are some interesting historical sites to be seen in our region. Thanks for sharing this with so many other people.

Wow. This awesome video gave me CHILLS! My maternal great-great grandfather was a Medical Doctor who was drafted into an Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment in Oct 1863. He was at this battle, under General Thomas' command, taking care of wounded troops. Now I HAVE TO GO SEE THIS FOR MYSELF. Thank you so much for doing these excellent vids, so well done!! Bravo Zulu!
I was there when I was only 13 years old and sat on Lookout Mountain, at the time farthest south points I’ve ever been considering I’m from the north and remember just being in awe
We visited lookout mountain a few weeks ago. Fortunately things are open again. The views from the top are incredible. What a beautiful part of the country. This was our first visit to a battlefield.
Hiking up Lookout Mountain and Kennesaw Mountain near Atlanta definitely gives the visitor an appreciation and respect for the common American Civil War soldier. Awesome video!
We were there two years ago but I missed the plaques in the rock. Thanks for taking the long way up and showing those!!! The view is amazing and I remember thinking how in the world could they have a battle in such a formidable place!
Being much younger, I walked part of the approaches the Union initiated in the taking of Lookout Mountain in the Battle Above the Clouds. The Confederates - due to the Fog - let their Left Flank open. Missionary Ridge was also engaged. The Federals went straight up the mountain, overcame the Southerners Flank and moved in a wave to sweep away any Rebel Resistance. Timing is everything. It worked. Great Visit. Thanks for the recap. My great-great-grandfather Israel Garner fought in the Battle Above the Clouds in the 38th Alabama. The next day, they delayed the attack on Missionary Ridge by burning the bridge Hooker had to cross to reach the south end of the ridge where he was supposed to advance north. Another great-great-grandfather, Columbus Johnston of the 7th Florida was in the rifle pits below Bragg's headquarters. He was wounded and taken captive. In the hours prior to the Union advance on Missionary Ridge, my granddaughter had at least three 4th great-grandfathers from Florida, Alabama and Georgia in the rifle pits separated by about 600 yards.
In April 2012, I parked by the Craven House and climbed up Lookout Mountain to the top. It took me over an hour, and a police officer couldn’t believe I did it at age 60 and gave me a ride back to my car. Imagine how much more difficult it was with a rifle and other equipment. The views are spectacular.
I love this. I grew up in that area and visited battlefields with my grandparents when they visited. Chattanooga has some really fantastic battlefields. I hope you do a video for Chickamauga soon. The fighting there was especially fierce. The lunber from the area was so riddled with lead that it actually shut down a local lumber mill in the area. The only more unique civil war battlefield I've been to was Columbus Belmont where a chain was stretched across the mighty Mississippi to stop traffic. Anyway, thank you for the video. It was nice seeing one of my favorite childhood places to visit again.
Another great episode. You should do one on Missionary Ridge. Visiting the small parcels that are protected among residential neighborhoods might be an adventure in itself.
The interesting thing is the attack on Missionary Ridge wasn't supposed to happen beyond clearing Confederate rifle pits. Thomas ordered his men up to clear the rifle pits on the lower slope of the ridge. But the men kept going. And they keep going until they routed the Confederate forces off Missionary Ridge. This ended the siege of Chattanooga. I look forward to seeing you on someones front lawn. It really is between houses in many cases. Some artillery pieces look like they're on peoples front lawns.
Thanks for the meticulous research again, JD. That area of Tennessee is near and dear to my heart as my Dad was raised just a couple of counties over in Polk County. I spent every summer in SE Tennessee, being able to see many of these interesting points. My Pappaw worked for the TVA back in the day and helped build the "flume" on the Ocoee River where the white water rafting is currently. If you want an interesting read on Southern Politics, look up "The Battle of Athens" following WWII. I am distantly related to the Sheriff of Polk County during that time- the name is well known to this day. My daughter was in hungry last year and everyone was so incredibly kind to her- she loves it there- my family is from Chattanooga and went there all the time growing up- up on top rock city and at battlefield- grandparents lived in chickamauga but took 20-30 more years for me to understand the history aside of the beauty

If you haven't done one on Kennesaw Mountain you should look into it and the stealing of the General locomotive in Kennesaw. I was there back in the 70's when they brought it back. Police everywhere because they thought someone might try it again. Very interesting.
1970 my mom dad and 11 year old me visited Lookout Mountain on our trip from Texas. I remember seeing Cravens House and Lookout Point. Also Rock City and the Confederama which I don’t think exists anymore. It was at the base of the mountain. It was a huge miniature battlefield with hundreds of miniature soldiers. Was a cool trip.
I'm currently in Chattanooga and the views from Lookout mountain are incredible. Much of the time the clouds curl around and over the mountain but it dominates the landscape. Very good storytelling and you've given me some more things to see while I'm here. As an aside Ruby falls is well worth the trip.

That hike to point park is always fun after a rain. Never understand how people trail run on it I'm far too clumsy. I really enjoy the little building behind the overlook with the old pictures in it. I imagine that's probably closed right now.
I'm from Chickamauga right outside the park. I like your channel . This video on Lookout Mountain is special to me because my great uncle told me when I was very young that his great grampa told him that the confederate army would have to time their fuses just right on the cannons because they would tilt them down and alot of the times the ball would roll out before it could blast out.lol..
I am a Civil War re-enactor: The Enfield's only weigh about 11 lbs, however, the ammo, with lead bullets in it, weighs considerably more than the blanks we fire. Great film though-enjoyed every minute of it

My 4th great grandfather was captured and paroled July 3rd 1863 at the siege of Vicksburg. Just awesome you mentioned that at the beginning. Have you done a video in Vicksburg?

I have been to this Battlefield twice and am shocked every time i go because of the pure tenacity and Will power the Union troops had to assault and eventually take lookout mountain. Its one of my favorite battlefields for sure. Did you know that during the battle of lookout mountain when Grant arrived he was spotted by Confederate Forces across the Tennessee River and instead of being fired upon the Confederate Forces Saluted him and Grant always said that he wished he had soldiers just like those that saluted him and braved coming out in the open to render a salute. Absolutely amazing little stories.

I used to play in those woods as a kid and never really appreciated the history there till I got older. Would love to run a metal detector around there!
That thought was running through my head the entire time that I was there.
If you get caught they'll take everything you own equipment, detectors, vehicle,fine and jail time
The History Underground Don’t be tempted. You can’t technically even have a metal detector in your trunk when you are on National Battlefield grounds. They can confiscate it, your vehicle, and put you in jail.

U.S. Pro Cycling National Championships were in Chattanooga in 2014 and 2015. We love riding and racing up Lookout Mountain. We did get to check out the Civil War National Park on top of Lookout Mountain., but did not have time to see much more. Looking forward to go back in the future and this time seeing more history.

HOME!!!! Indeed we have heavy fog anytime of the year up here. And indeed sometimes we are above the clouds. If you do not feel like hiking up there is a very cool funicular railway which will take up all the way up from the valley. Lookout Mountain takes its name from the fact that you can see seven states from it.

Very nice job - enjoyed it. I was able to stand upon Lookout Point looking down on Moccasin Bend and Chattanooga twice in my life (Wisconsin person). It was the first Civil War site in a long line of visits to many battlefields over the years. Anyway the second time up there my wife accepted my marriage proposal and it's now 31 years later. It'll always hold a special place for me - not only as a Civil War crazed individual but as a happily married man.

I must say the way you tell each of these stories is amazing and I hope this channel grows into something more incredible than it already is. This is the only UA-cam channel I support through Patreon...this video is the perfect example of why.. You do a fantastic job of explaining the landmarks and give a general description of the places that you visit without going into a long drawn out explanation of what happened there..Thank you JD for visiting Lookout Mtn, I had wanted to tour the battlefield the day after my visit to Chickamauga but the weather turned bad. If you have not toured Chickamauga that is one awesome battlefield. More cannon than I have ever seen in one place in my lifetime.

That path with the stairs going up to the pipe coming out of the rock looks like what was built for public access to natural springs up in the White Mountains here. You could refill your canteens or get a drink there. The one you showed looks like it has not been maintained, but you can see the water flowing out on the rocks all around you, so the spring is probably still there.
Was looking exactly for this sort of comment when I watched that part of the video!
My family is related to Braxton Bragg, he was my Dad's 2nd. cousin. My maiden name is Bragg. My Dad was born in 1903 in Chattanooga. His family used to frequently have Sunday afternoon outings on Lookout Mountain. He told me on one of the outings he found a Confederate kepi and a belt in a hollow tree. He had it for years but doesn't know what happened to it once he married and moved out of his parents home.
After accompanying a middle school boys’ choir on the piano as they sang a song “Battle Above the Clouds,” this was on my bucket list of places to visit. I was able to go there in 2021 with my 14 year old son and walked the very same path that you took through the woods from Craven’s house. I enjoyed your video immensely.

As a Chattanooga, Thank You for highlighting this aspect of our city so beautifully. Hope you were able to see Rock City and drive down The W Road. Not too long ago we found a cannon ball in my father in laws yard on Missionary Ridge. Lots of history in this area.

I grew up as a teenager on Signal Mountain and always knew the deep history of that area. My mother knows so much history of that, and the surrounding areas. Spent a lot of time outdoors in that entire area and miss it greatly. Lived on Missionary Ridge as well. It’s such a beautiful area and, geographically speaking, is laid out so beautifully. This is such a great video. Thanks for your time and research on it.

Your Vlogs remind me of valuable learning moments so simplistically perfected with touch, feel and pondering thoughts. Wow. This awesome video gave me CHILLS! My maternal great-great grandfather was a Medical Doctor who was drafted into an Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment in Oct 1863. He was at this battle, under General Thomas' command, taking care of wounded troops. Now I HAVE TO GO SEE THIS FOR MYSELF. Thank you so much for doing these excellent vids, so well done!! Bravo Zulu!

We visited lookout mountain a few weeks ago. Fortunately things are open again. The views from the top are incredible. What a beautiful part of the country. This was our first visit to a battlefield.
Hiking up Lookout Mountain and Kennesaw Mountain near Atlanta definitely gives the visitor an appreciation and respect for the common American Civil War soldier. Awesome video!

Being much younger, I walked part of the approaches the Union initiated in the taking of Lookout Mountain in the Battle Above the Clouds. The Confederates - due to the Fog - let their Left Flank open. Missionary Ridge was also engaged. The Federals went straight up the mountain, overcame the Southerners Flank and moved in a wave to sweep away any Rebel Resistance. Timing is everything. It worked. Great Visit. Thanks for the recap. My great-great-grandfather Israel Garner fought in the Battle Above the Clouds in the 38th Alabama. The next day, they delayed the attack on Missionary Ridge by burning the bridge Hooker had to cross to reach the south end of the ridge where he was supposed to advance north. Another great-great-grandfather, Columbus Johnston of the 7th Florida was in the rifle pits below Bragg's headquarters. He was wounded and taken captive. In the hours prior to the Union advance on Missionary Ridge, my granddaughter had at least three 4th great-grandfathers from Florida, Alabama and Georgia in the rifle pits separated by about 600 yards.
In April 2012, I parked by the Craven House and climbed up Lookout Mountain to the top. It took me over an hour, and a police officer couldn’t believe I did it at age 60 and gave me a ride back to my car. Imagine how much more difficult it was with a rifle and other equipment. The views are spectacular.
I love this. I grew up in that area and visited battlefields with my grandparents when they visited. Chattanooga has some really fantastic battlefields. I hope you do a video for Chickamauga soon. The fighting there was especially fierce. The lunber from the area was so riddled with lead that it actually shut down a local lumber mill in the area. The only more unique civil war battlefield I've been to was Columbus Belmont where a chain was stretched across the mighty Mississippi to stop traffic. Anyway, thank you for the video. It was nice seeing one of my favorite childhood places to visit again.
Another great episode. You should do one on Missionary Ridge. Visiting the small parcels that are protected among residential neighborhoods might be an adventure in itself.
That's a great idea! I'm actually working on a plan for that right now.
The interesting thing is the attack on Missionary Ridge wasn't supposed to happen beyond clearing Confederate rifle pits. Thomas ordered his men up to clear the rifle pits on the lower slope of the ridge. But the men kept going. And they keep going until they routed the Confederate forces off Missionary Ridge. This ended the siege of Chattanooga. I look forward to seeing you on someones front lawn. It really is between houses in many cases. Some artillery pieces look like they're on peoples front lawns.
Thanks for the meticulous research again, JD. That area of Tennessee is near and dear to my heart as my Dad was raised just a couple of counties over in Polk County. I spent every summer in SE Tennessee, being able to see many of these interesting points. My Pappaw worked for the TVA back in the day and helped build the "flume" on the Ocoee River where the white water rafting is currently. If you want an interesting read on Southern Politics, look up "The Battle of Athens" following WWII. I am distantly related to the Sheriff of Polk County during that time- the name is well known to this day. My father took my family there in the 90s, on the way from Oklahoma to visit family in the Smokies. Ill never forget it.
I've been there 3 times. Once with my parents as a young boy, where I posed on one of the cannons on top. Once I spent the night at a hotel on top. Great vid

My daughter was in hungry last year and everyone was so incredibly kind to her- she loves it there- my family is from Chattanooga and went there all the time growing up- up on top rock city and at battlefield- grandparents lived in chickamauga but took 20-30 more years for me to understand the history aside of the beauty

If you haven't done one on Kennesaw Mountain you should look into it and the stealing of the General locomotive in Kennesaw. I was there back in the 70's when they brought it back. Police everywhere because they thought someone might try it again. Very interesting.
1970 my mom dad and 11 year old me visited Lookout Mountain on our trip from Texas. I remember seeing Cravens House and Lookout Point. Also Rock City and the Confederama which I don’t think exists anymore. It was at the base of the mountain. It was a huge miniature battlefield with hundreds of miniature soldiers. Was a cool trip.
I'm currently in Chattanooga and the views from Lookout mountain are incredible. Much of the time the clouds curl around and over the mountain but it dominates the landscape. Very good storytelling and you've given me some more things to see while I'm here. As an aside Ruby falls is well worth the trip.
I grew up just south of there. I read the book Mountains Touched with fire. Then went up there on vacation a few years ago. What an experience. Thanks for the video.

That hike to point park is always fun after a rain. Never understand how people trail run on it I'm far too clumsy. I really enjoy the little building behind the overlook with the old pictures in it. I imagine that's probably closed right now.

I'm from Chickamauga right outside the park. I like your channel . This video on Lookout Mountain is special to me because my great uncle told me when I was very young that his great grampa told him that the confederate army would have to time their fuses just right on the cannons because they would tilt them down and alot of the times the ball would roll out before it could blast out.lol..
I am a Civil War re-enactor: The Enfield's only weigh about 11 lbs, however, the ammo, with lead bullets in it, weighs considerably more than the blanks we fire. Great film though-enjoyed every minute of it

I really enjoyed the tour and appreciated the view especially now during Covid. I also liked the Franklin video. Hopefully in a year, I'm going to tour all of Tennessee. My 4th great grandfather was captured and paroled July 3rd 1863 at the siege of Vicksburg. Just awesome you mentioned that at the beginning. Have you done a video in Vicksburg?

I took the Incline Railway up to Lookout Mountain and the park up there. It's an incredible view.
