I grew up on Sand Mountain nearby and oral family history stated that we were decedents of Cherokees who stayed and escaped the soldiers. I remember always going to Noccalula Falls and watching cherokee pow wow. I have no proof. I’ve never been able to find ANYTHING other than you to support the oral history. No historical documents, no censuses, nothing Thank you, my search continues but you have invigorated my search
Well add Red Clay to the list of places I need to go to. I just recently went to New Echota and Blythe Ferry. Also never knew that water stairway was beside the aquarium, been there a few times and never even knew it. Now I gotta go back and to also see Ross's Landing
Hi. I found out John Ross was my great great so forth uncles father in law. Which is cool but after reading the history about his ppl being on trails of tears I was utterly mad how they were forced to be removed
Chief John Ross and his wife and children were deported in the "Trail of Tears" west along with hundreds more. His wife a devout Christian along with hundreds of others are buried along that trail. A soldier tasked with the removal later wrote his account of the removal in which he describes his sadnes and how the soldiers tried to help the people who had inadequate supplies and blankets in the cold journey. He mentions Mrs.Ross as a lovely Christian lady and her illness and death.
I actually like Chattanooga the way it is. I appreciate the attention. Also, when you talk to some of the some tourists, they tell interesting stories about where they come from. Whether it is a Florida, California, or even Europe. One day, I talked to a woman downtown who said she was visiting from France. It's also worth noting that the tourism rakes in a lot of money for the city.
DNA has been done. We have no American Indian blood. Our ancestors were from Scotland and settled in Northern Virginia then after War Between the States moved to Kentucky. The John Ross family with Cherokee ancestors were remarkable people from Tennessee.
