    What a thrill to seed this car in all its glory! I am one of the privileged people who worked on it while in the custody of the previous owner - during the time it was re-discovered as Dan Gurney's old race car. So glad it has made it "home" to Goodwood!!

    I knew nothing of this car until there was a two page photo and short article about it in Hot Rod Magazine a month or two ago.
    I'm very happy that you've shared the story of the the car's restoration.
    Thank you.

    In 2001 I had the honor of sitting at the same table with Dan and his wife at a Toyota Racing Development Christmas party. He was a gentleman and very gracious. It was an honor meeting him. 1st class all the way. It's fantastic that you are saving part of his legacy.

    Thanks for bringing this piece of history back to life! Wish I could see the faces of the Scots when they hear and then see an uncorked 409 barreling up the glen on a one track road! PRICELESS!

    I was at Silverstone at the age of 12 with my Dad, my first visit. We had walked round to near the end of Hanger straight standing behind the hay bales. I still remember the Jags getting closer going into Stowe then Gurney pulling away, nose up tail down. Wonderful day a lifetime ago. Great work on the restoration.

    This car was part of my childhood when it was living in the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia. I remember late nights holding the torch when my Dad would work on it with its prior owner. So nice to see it at Goodwood!

    Years ago I was privileged to be one of the attendees at the Amelia Island Concours D'elegance that honored Dan Gurney. They had a great selection of the historic cars from his career and even had a DG BMX bike that I had as a kid. Now after seeing this series of videos I can't help but think it would have only completed the collection and the awesome day that honored Dan to have this Impala at that wonderful event. I hope an invitation will be in order for a future Amelia Island Concours! Thank you for posting this story.

    NASCAR Bans Jaguars in 1954 & Silverstone Bans Chevrolets in 1961. The Jaguar victory in the NASCAR race in New Jersey in 1954 is not a victory that commonly shows up in Jaguar racing records. But at that 1954 road race in Linden, New Jersey, Jaguar cars finished first, fourth, fifth and sixth. Soon after that race Jaguar was banned from racing in NASCAR. it was the last NASCAR victory by a “foreign” car for more than 50 years until Toyota began NASCAR racing. The reason I mention this is Dan Gurney took a almost stock 1961 full size Chevrolet 409 V8 Impala "Police Package" To race at Silverstone, England. At Silverstone, its debut race, Gurney put the Impala on pole, lapping the famous circuit 1.2 seconds quicker than Graham Hill in a 3.8-liter Jag. Gurney led most of the race from pole, setting a saloon-car lap record in the process. But two laps from the finish, disaster struck. Gurney's right rear wheel came off, forcing his retirement and handing victory to Hill. Soon after, Dan Gurney and his Chevrolet were banned from the British saloon car series.

    Well done video series and a worthwhile quest. You've certainly honored a racing icon while representing yourself exceedingly well. I still shake my head thinking of a Chevrolet 409 road racing among 3.8L Jaguars. Preposterously brilliant. Thank you.

    I remember seeing this car parked on the street in Randwick, a suburb on the south side of Sydney, Australia around 30 years ago. It was RHD and super desirable then too! I came across it again many years later in a workshop at Brookvale on the other side of town. It was stripped and missing the motor etc. My brother and I have always wondered what became of it. Now I know, and I couldn't be happier to see it running in such fine original condition. Congratulations !

      @@edfoster1447 I have personally known four owners of this car, three during their ownership. Laurie O'Neil is the odd man out, he didn't keep it long after he bought it (and an Aston Martin DB4GTZ) right after the Jaguar people put the mockers on Gurney racing it again. To decide which one to keep he ran both at a hillclimb at Silverdale and decided on keeping the Aston. As far as racing it in Australia goes, that was a non-event as Touring Cars over 1500cc had to be 4-doors.
      The very first race meeting I ever attended was at Warwick Farm in October, 1962, and this car was there bearing the numberplate RH-218. I knew right away it was Ron Hodgson's plate and saw that he was using it to tow his Mini Cooper race car around. Ron was a car dealer so he didn't keep it long and it was sold on to Greg Cusack for his mechanic, Bruce Burr, to drive. It was used especially towing Greg's double-deck trailer with the Brabham, Elfin and Lotus racing and sports cars to race meetings.
      Greg was Mr Nice Guy and when he flew to the interstate meetings he'd take his wife, Dorothy, with him. It was the need to avoid Dorothy having to do the clumsy 'get in the back of a 2-door' thing when Bruce picked them up at the airports which caused Greg to sell it and buy a Dodge Phoenix to take its place. But Bruce Burr always said that the Impala was the best tow car he ever had.
      Much later I met the bloke who must have been the final owner. He had a workshop in Brookvale and had restored the car, and when I knew him he had it stored on a property near Bathurst. He told me he'd found the engine had been removed and used in a boat which sank, but somehow (years later) he was able to retrieve the engine and reunite it with the car. He was bitter about how the Americans treated him over the car, claiming that he could never get a good enough paint job on it without it being done in America for it to be considered properly restored. They also doubted the provenance of the car for some reason.

    • @raybell6984
      @raybell6984 3 роки тому

      A good little story about the car...
      Ron Hodgson had Bill Buckle working with him at times, Bill was the builder of the Buckle coupes powered by Zephyr 6 engines. At this time Bill owned an E-type, it would have been 'stock in trade' rather than his treasured personal transport. And they arranged to have a little drag race up the street beside Hoddo's dealership in Lidcombe.
      It was a narrow street, but they managed to line up side by side and then drop their clutches. Bill told me that both cars started slewing left and right with wheelspin and they kissed in the rear quarters and swapped some paint.

    Hey Ed! brilliant, hope to get to see it before it disappears up north, we are doing the Horsham Ameri car na, on Sunday in the Galaxie, 'muscle car section'. Should be fun !.
    Must Enjoy another cruise down for a Goodwood breakfast before the weather turns.
    Have fun, be good to compare noise one day ! at least mine has token silencers !! :o))

    • @edfoster1447
      @edfoster1447 5 років тому

      Your 'token silencers' sound like a great idea...! Would have been fun to get to Horsham, but sadly can't this week. Do they do them often?

    • @neilpine6629
      @neilpine6629 5 років тому +2

      Horsham was ''huge'' !! its an annual event and in its second year now , all American cars of course, its going to be a must do event for sure. Things to ponder on re the silencers without compromising the character maybe straight through glass packs ?, they take out the annoyong harsh resonance somewhat and are very cheap and compact diameter wise.
      the Galaxie has drop downs , ie finish under the car and facing the ground ( stops some sound that way) but I have edged them out sideways just a little ( they are fun in a dusty car park :o)) !! also consider if it doesnt detract from the authenticity to put one out each side so getting sort of 50% noise each side rather than full beans one side.
      You actually get used to pob pob pobbing through towns on low revs and in 20 years of a lumpy cammed 455 BHP Chevy in my Healey never had any problems.
      Loud pipes save lives remember.!

      Thanks Neil. Will keep an eye out for the Horsham event next year. I am in two minds about the silencers - I am wondering whether the cheapest/best option is to just wear ear plugs...!
