    If you are not a gear head (petrol head) then all of this is lost on you. The car is nearly 60 years old now with ancient technology, but we gear heads are immediately transported back in time in these old race cars. Kudos to all the great Brit mechanics who restored her and for bringing her home to Silverstone. As the gent said at the end the Brits just love to see a good race....amen!

    "The whole ground shakes..." This is part of owning older (and some newer) American-made V8-powered cars. While, their handling comes no where close to their European cousins, the horsepower and raw sound makes most men smile! Thank you for restoring this Impala!

    I emigrated to the US in 1968 as a 10 year old. Used to ride my bike down the A5/Watling Street to Fazeley. There was a rope swing in a tree next to the canal. . . Probably 200 yards from the service station shown here they used to run 'stock' car racing at Drayton Manor that crossed the Lichfield Road. 50 years on, it seems like yesterday.

    I guess someone dropped in some fuel additive before adding that pump gas. The 409 is a wonderful and historic motor. She looks/sounds fantastic.

    Amazing meeting a guy who saw the car in 1961, a nice story, should have given him a passenger ride around the circuit. The Chevy looks great from the side view driving along.

    Yes, indeed. How did Gurney flog that around Silverstone without ending off the track. A testament to his skill I suppose.

      He was prbably used to american cars,as they had very much power and torque.So they needed to be steered by the steering and the gas pedal.A 61 Impala isnt that much diffrent to drive than a 63 Galaxie.And they have done well in british racing.

      Arild Guldbrandsen Hi Arild - I was more wondering about racing with a bench seat! When you go round a corner you tend to end up in a different county...

      Hi Ed
      This all makes me smile I just brought over a 63 Galaxie and can so empathise with all your experiences !! Its well tuned too 450 hp and the exhaust is about the same decibel wise.
      Everyone loves it and puts a smile on their faces, on the road we always get waves and thumbs up.
      Huge fun once you get used to its size on our narrow roads and needs a bit of concentration when you hustle it ..
      It has lap belts so that helps keep you somewhat in one place if needed.

    • @edfoster1447
      @edfoster1447 6 років тому +2

      Thanks Neil - yes, it absolutely puts smiles on everyone's faces! The size is going to take some getting used to. I have a feeling that multi-story car parks are a no go, no matter how confident you are! Your '63 Galaxie sounds great - good plan on the lap belts...

      Yes,i forgot about the bench..i have tried track days in my Chevelle when it had a bench..it was interesting hehe :).Soo much diffrence,when i installed racing seats.With a bench,you are using the steering wheel to hold yourself in control..with a real seat,you have control of the car.

    What are the statistics on it!? 450bhp, drum brakes, skimpy tires... that combo makes a fun drive;-) Car of that era need a sensitive hand and feel for all the old technology (if you want to call it that, as in those days, there were cars with even 5 gears, disc-brakes and proper independent rear...). Well, the old US V8 is still good for surprises.

    NASCAR Bans Jaguars in 1954 & Silverstone Bans Chevrolets in 1961. The Jaguar victory in the NASCAR race in New Jersey in 1954 is not a victory that commonly shows up in Jaguar racing records. But at that 1954 road race in Linden, New Jersey, Jaguar cars finished first, fourth, fifth and sixth. Soon after that race Jaguar was banned from racing in NASCAR. it was the last NASCAR victory by a “foreign” car for more than 50 years until Toyota began NASCAR racing. The reason I mention this is Dan Gurney took a almost stock 1961 full size Chevrolet 409 V8 Impala "Police Package" To race at Silverstone, England. At Silverstone, its debut race, Gurney put the Impala on pole, lapping the famous circuit 1.2 seconds quicker than Graham Hill in a 3.8-liter Jag. Gurney led most of the race from pole, setting a saloon-car lap record in the process. But two laps from the finish, disaster struck. Gurney's right rear wheel came off, forcing his retirement and handing victory to Hill. Soon after, Dan Gurney and his Chevrolet were banned from the British saloon car series.

    • @seanbriankirby7646
      @seanbriankirby7646 5 років тому

      It was a factory 409, essentially gone through by an expert engine builder before being taken to England. The car was made to run pump gas. It's said even the production 4-barrel's jets were left untouched.
      Oh, wait - this engine was meant for leaded fuel. Was anything done for the engine - or fuel - in regards to this?

    • @TheMdavis07
      @TheMdavis07 5 років тому +1

      Correct me if I'm wrong but the fuel back then wasnt that great back in the day. Minus the lead additive im sure the low to mid grade would be competent to pump gas back in the day
