Great explanation of rabies, more should learn about it. Had to save a new neighbor who isn't used to wild life(Came from a city) and they had a raccoon acting strange during the day in their yard and i saw his kids walking out to it. I don't think i have ever run that fast to yell out my door to stop them. In the end they put the animal down and it did indeed have rabies. So glad Boy Scouts taught me about it when i was younger.

I agree with you Dr Lee….we as a nation are grossly misinformed and lacking in fundamental infectious disease. I took a 6 hour course (3-2 hr lectures) as part of my training to be one of my office’s volunteer first responders and that 6 hour course in infectious disease prevention was so enlightening. I certainly don’t know everything but I learned what’s important…how to keep myself and others safe, how to recognize potential risks, what is effective, what’s not, etc. If everyone were to just be given this same type of training, along with a community first aid and CPR/AED training as graduating HS seniors….it would go a long way in improving our overall public health.

Thank you Dr. Lee. I am a retired animal control officer (34 years) and have dealt with this issue my whole career. What you stated and how you stated it is exactly the way I would explain it to the public. The differences between the short (10 day) quarantine versus the 6 week/6 month quarantine is always a confusing issue to the general public. Another misconception is how the disease progresses in the animal (or person). Many people think it progresses through the bloodstream. That is incorrect. It progresses along the nerve fibers -- that's why the disease takes such varying times to reach the brain. The further from the brain, the longer it takes to reach it. If it were blood-borne, progress would be very rapid.
Again, thanks for the clear explanations. Best of luck to you.

Dr Lee, a very important point you did not mention; My cats have always been strictly indoor cats. This DOES NOT mean they do not need to be vaccinated against rabies. First of all, cats can and do 'escape' at times and then are vulnerable to rabid wildlife. Also, mice and bats can very easily get into ones home, and your cat can be exposed in that way. Please folks, make sure your indoor pets are vaccinated. They are potentially vulnerable. Dr Lee, never apologize for a lengthy, educational video. Very important information was shared here today.

Doc Lee I'm up in New Jersey. We've had numerous outbreaks of distemper and rabies where I'm at. People have no clue about them - even though it decimated multiple times over feral cat populations as well as racoon, bobcat, and foxes.
As for education just take a look at Lyme disease. So many doctors are completely oblivious about it or they trust that the test is infallible instead of trusting their instincts and the symptomology. Doctors in all states need to know about it because of patients coming in from other states and visiting. In the north east we see hundreds of thousands of cases per year - estimates I've seen range from 400,000 to 2.5 million in total in the US. I've seen POTS, memory loss, uncontrollable rage, heart issues like murmur and POTS, vertigo, hearing damage, vision damage, joint issues, and a whole host of other issues. It's so simple to spray your clothing with tick spray when doing work outside but most people don't.
It's all things that should be taught in school before they think of screwing with the modern crap. But of course the administrators value politics over common sense.

Daryl Hall, of Hall and Oates, had to stop performing for a while because he was constantly ill. He tells about going to numerous doctors and not getting any answers or a definitive diagnosis. Finally, one day his ex-girlfriend Sara Allen, for whom he wrote the song "Sara Smile", told him to see if he had Lyme disease. He got tested, and it turned out that he not only had Lyme disease, but babesiosis and a couple other tick-borne diseases as well. After a long treatment regimen with antibiotics, he was able to resume performing. Lyme disease is very serious. The best defense against transmissible diseases is to be armed with reliable, accurate information and to make informed, well-reasoned decisions. Ignoring the problem or panicking out of irrational fear is not going to help.

Then there are the doctors who only hear horses and never look for the zebras when you can see that the horse is actually black and white with stripes. I learned a lot about infectious diseases because I went through a period of looking at the nastier pathogens to try to come to terms with a chronic illness. Essentially I was looking at diseases and going "at least I don't have this". 27 years later I'm still disabled due to Lyme and the 3 years it was allowed to run roughshod over my body. @@OutontheRanchwithDrLee-xb4lo

Thank you for sharing this information with us. I am 70 years old and have not been exposed to knowledge about rabies except in your two videos since high school. I have never known anyone who died from rabies but there was a woman in my hometown who stepped on a rusty nail in her barn when I was in high school. She was in the small two bed infectious disease ward which didn't have a TV. My mother was a nurse at the hospital and asked me to come read to her. I read "Gone with the Wind". Sometimes my voice caused her pain and during those times I just sat with her to keep her company. She had what is known as lockjaw and died and excruciatingly painful death. I was only 16 but so grateful that I was able to bring some peace to her. She knew she was dying and her family didn't come round because they couldn't handle what the disease was doing to her body. I so much wanted to hug her but knew I couldn't because I would only cause her more pain. When she reached out to me I let her hold me. Usually it was just my hand or arm. She knew the uncontrollable spasms could hurt me.

I was born and raised in the territory of Alaska (before it became a state). Wild dog packs along with an abundance of a variety of wildlife saturated all corners of the landscape. Rabies was rampant and considered commonplace, so much so, that rabies education was part of the yearly, standard educational curriculum. If memory serves me correctly, starting in the 4th grade, a day was dedicated to this topic. Discussions, Q&A's and a very graphic movie was shown depicting the various symptoms, stages and ultimate death as a result of being infected with rabies (both animal and human victims were shown). It was gruesome, but essential information necessary for survival for those of us living in a very wild and beautiful land. I'm pleased to see that you are addressing this "taboo" subject on a matter which is rampant worldwide. Thank you for your time, service and dedication to education.

Thank you for the information Dr. Lee. My whole life I was wrong about the rabbies virus. Glad I watched your video 1st thing this morning. Yes, you are right about teaching this in the school system all the way from 7th thur 12th grades. I'm 58yo & I wished you would of been a teacher of mine, but your never to old to learn. So with that said I'm going to get my little doggies rabbie vaccine 💉 1st thing Monday morning. I don't want them chopping her head off like what happened to my Old King dog when back in 1984, my Sr. Year of high school, when a friend of my Dad's backed over my old big boy. My Dad was trying to check on him & he bit my Dad. He was to old, about 15yo, & hurt to help so my parents took him to the vet & had him put down. They wanted to make sure he didn't have rabbies so they cut his head off & sent it in to the state people who did the test. Came back he didn't have rabbies but my Mom always got his shot for it since he was an outside dog.
This is where I made the mistake at. I thought since my little poodles & my dog now wasn't an all the time outside dog they didn't need to be vaccinated for rabbies. But since you explained it to me I see how wrong I was. So thank you for this 30 min video for showing me I was wrong. See you can teach old dogs new tricks.

Dr Lee, thank you for educating me on Rabies. As I live in Australia and we don’t have it here, thank goodness, but I have never really understood anything, except that it was deadly.
As for forgetting your furbaby’s rabies vaccination, I can completely understand how anything slips past your mind, because at the time, nothing is more important except helping your son Mark through his cancer. I am so very sorry that Marks fight with cancer didn’t end on a positive note for all the family, it’s devastating, and a parent’s worst nightmare. Shattering for Marks wife and children. 💔💔💔
At the time our own son died I forgot everything for a long time, I was in a state of shock, to this day I still don’t remember some things that happened in the first few years after. Life is before his death and after, and a lot of blurred is after. Don’t ever take notice to those judgmental people they DID NOT walk in your shoes, and I guarantee you they would be the same or worse were they in that same situation themselves. I have zero tolerance for judgmental people, my tolerance for it rapidly declined after our son died. You tend to get a whole new perspective on life and what’s impossible versus what’s not.
It’s seem forever since you did that first video when the rabies came to your farm, it must seem like even longer for you and Mrs Lee, but I’m glad that your puppies are managing with the confinement as well as they are. Each day, is a day closer to them being free again.
People wonder why our government came down so hard on Amber Heard when she snuck her dogs in on a private jet, bypassed everything, the rules are in place for a reason, we don’t have rabies here, and by her selfish actions she put our country at risk. No one knew if her dogs had any infectious diseases, that’s why they have quarantine, checks, she just decided that rules didn’t apply to her, even though she was told her dogs had to abide by the rules, she chose to ignore them, so our government sent them back.!
Congratulations on your new precious baby granddaughter, she looks adorable 💕💕💕🎉
Thank you for your educational video on rabies, I was fascinated as I learnt things I had no idea about with this virus. I pray that rabies NEVER gets transmitted to our country, that virus is devastating. I am so thankful you knew what precautions to take with suspected rabies infection, just so sorry your puppies came in contact. Take care Dr Lee. ❤
Sending prayers, hugs and love to you and your family from Australia 🙏🏻❤️🥰😘

@@OutontheRanchwithDrLee-xb4lo oh most definitely, problem is no one knows what to say, and that ole’ saying time heals all wounds is complete BS…. In saying that I know 2 different women who both lost their sons, and sadly neither show any kind of grief, sadness, it’s like oh well there gone now nothing I can do. One woman says oh it’s all because I wasn’t nurtured as a child. She told me I was a freak because I remember the day and date our son was killed, let alone my dad who died at 52 from a massive heart attack. She couldn’t even remember the month or the date her son died. She went home and checked after we had talked about it, but so was so cold and heartless about it all which I found rather sad that there were no feelings for her son who passed away after ours had. Another one her son committed suicide, again it was very blaze’ I overheard heard the other woman say to her “oh don’t worry about her, her son died ages ago,” as if his death had no value or meaning. I feel for them they are both very heartless, to not love your child unconditionally just blows my mind, to me it’s just a natural love a parent has for their child. These days it seems not everyone has these same feelings towards their children sadly.
They say to grieve is to have loved, so it makes me wonder how deeply they really loved their child. Sorry for my rant, I just thought I would share a different perspective I have experienced. I have also been told “to get over it”, but, it’s NOT something you get over, it’s funny, because several of these people that have made those comments felt a huge turn around when they personally were affected by a passing.

The saddest memory I have as a retired vet tech is a beautiful Boxer we had to put down due to rabies. The owner brought her for a skin condition and when Doc asked about the vaccine status of the dog the owner stated she didn't need vaccines b/c she never goes outside w/o her on a lead and she only wanted the antibiotics. I live in the mountains in PA and we have had a rise in rabies over the past decade and only a week before had a little girl was attacked by a rabid skunk while on her swingset. Doc explained this and she still said no. Doc thinking it was a money issue said I'll waive the fee just so we can get her protected. Still no. Four months later the owner comes in hysterical that her baby was in the car and she was stumbling and drooling and sure enough she had rabies. I still think of her from time to time and how her owners mindset against a $15 vaccine would have saved her life.

She was told they had to go through quarantine and declared but she thought she was special and rules didn’t apply to her. That is a perfect example of WHY her dogs had to go back because of strict border polices with any animal coming into our country to prevent the spread of diseases like Rabies…..we don’t have any rabies here at all and she decided to put everything and everyone at risk by being utterly selfish. Great class. Growing up on a farm in Wisconsin, I learned some things about rabies, but you still taught me a lot. I was walking with my daughter when she was about 18 months old or so and we walked past a small wooded area, and a raccoon came charging out of the woods. If you could call it, that he looked like a drunk that had been on a bender. I grabbed my daughter and took off like a bat out of you know where and was very glad that the raccoon could not run very fast because I don't run very fast at all. I got home and called the police and they came and shot it. They called me after it had been tested to tell it was rabid. To think my little girl could have been bite makes me shutter to this day. She is now 26 and just had her 3rd baby 6 days ago. So, from one proud grandma to one proud grampa, congratulations on a beautiful baby girl into your wonderful family. Thank you very much for the information on the rabies. Ignor those self-important people who gave you a hard time about missing the vaccination of your dog. It's sad that they don't have enough in their life to keep them in fulfilled enough that they have to tear apart someone who went through hell like you did and are. His son had bitten by a raccoon and didn't tell his parents, so he didn't get the antitoxin and got rabies. In spite of all the care he received at the hospital, he passed away. Rabies is very serious and it's not 100 percent effective even if you get the antitoxin immediately after the bite.
