i like this buff idea, doesnt affect the people that like using it now and makes it way more usable + gives it a proper niche that isnt a joke subclass
As someone who likes using it now and also sucks at market gardening, I'd like to be affected by any buff to the caber because it's just so bad.

It's kinda fun for me to use. Nobody expects you to charge at someone with the caber. So its always funny when you Demoknight-charge at the enemy and they soon realize "Oh shit hes got a caber!"
Its especially funny when they just try to escape from a fight.
I didn't become bad at TF2, they just nerfed all my weapons :(
The way I see it, they could do one of two things:
- Allow refilling from ammo boxes
- give it a damage buff
Because right now it's just not good at all. It needs a buff to function.
Damage buff. Anything short of it is useless and defeats the point. It's supposed to be a last ditch weapon, you aren't supposed to survive if you take it out. Hence I don't know why it was nerfed so much. One hitting low health classes was the only reason to use it. And even then it's really only effective against snipers. Scouts are too fast, spies are invisible and engineers have a big-ass sentry.

Honestly I'd love to see the caber get reworked into some sort of explosive market gardener, still doing decent ground damage but having that advantage for a class designed to fling himself towards the enemy is a good buff.
They should make it automatically refill after 30 seconds or refill by doing 500 or so damage with other weapons
I don't think doing all that damage with other weapons is super viable on the one class that often forgoes all other weapons for melee.

... yea, just crouch after a charge for full damage. You can even kill (almost fully) overhealed Heavies with an shieldbash for up to 430 damage. The only change I'd want is to be able to refill with ammoboxes and nothing more really, maybe set the base explo. damage back to 100 or make the falloff smaller, that would be fine too I guess but not really necessary imo.
I did know about that but I could never get the crouch attack to work.
Also I feel recharging from an ammo source is too OP
@@Whomobile I don't think so, it doesn't have to be from any ammobox maybe make it like you need 200 Metal to refill it, so you can't just take a small pack and have one again

Fun fact- you can actually one shot light classes more reliably if you aim at their feet, for some reason this makes it so thw explosion does more damage
I think its cause it uses the same explosive damage as your rockets or stickies.
The best place to aim for most damage..is their legs/feet, so you can guarantee a hit/kill, plus damage radius.

Actualy, it is still possible to one shot light classes- I think Zasty Jesus showed it of in one of his videos.
You basically just have to aim a bit lower/at the people's feet.
For some reason this makes it so the explosion does enough damage to one shot somebody

Having the caber actually kill its target would be nice but as it is now, scaring the shit out of an enemy sniper by leaving them with 1 hp is pretty funny.

I miss the old caber so much. It was such a fun weapon to mess around with. :( Also I wish it had it's taunt kill.
add better explosive damage and add a recharge meter + add functioning taunt kill done similar to the soldiers grenade blast but if it hits a target you take no damage yourself
It should 1000% be able to one shot light classes, a direct hit does and has range and 3 more shots!
i like this buff idea because then it's like you're actually throwing the bomb, you're just going along with it
i love the proposed idea! we always needed a demo market garden.
Now another (more complex) way i’d buff it would be so it oneshots light classes again and it can be recharged over time (faster if you pick ammo) , but if you hit an enemy with it, it should always kill you…. unless it’s a crit. So it truly becomes a last resort unless you go full caberknight and calculate your charges well (and manage to survive afterwards)

You just described how to fix 90% of "broken" weapons in TF2. Literally just revert it. Every single update since after Love & War has been terrible for the game.
I would make it insta-kill any class, but leave the Demoman at 1 HP after the explosion, that'd be so annoying but at the same time really funny because it just wouldn't be practical.
only other idea for a buff is either a recharge mechanic for the boom part of the stick, or maybe an ammo pack giving back the boom ( and maybe from dispensers too, but unsure )

ok but fr, i kinda like what you suggested, and i’d add on top of that that the caber should be able to recharge passively (like 20s, 15 if it won’t be affected by anything else but the resupply). having to run all the way back to spawn or wait out the 20s respawn timer every time, even when in non-2fort scenarios, is a pain in the ass.

Personally, I think that if we're going to give the Caber crits, explosion damage of which can one-shot anything but a Heavy (including overhealed classes and max health buffs), then uhh no. Minicrits could work, however - give it a "minicrits when it would normally crit", but keep the other stats involving making it a "Scottish Market Gardener".
Also I use the terms "demotroll" and "memoman" (pronounced "memo-man", but the "mem" comes from meme) interchangably for the "trolldier but demoman" playstyle. Hope this comment boosts your chance at funny number going up because algorithm! :)
as someone with a strange caber and a pumpkin bombs one i fully agree i want a better excuse to use them more
You said that the reason behind the nerf was because of caberknights, but I always thought it was the opposite. Where demoman was far too good and far too easily capable of flying at like mach 12 to one-hit-kill classes like Medic.
if you crouch before swinging and hit your enemy in the ankles you can break the 125 damage barrier and onetap light classes again

The best part of classic tf2 was being a sOOs bomber with the caber. It hasn't been the same since.
One minor correction. Most people actually point to the Caber being able to One Shot medics as the reason for its Nerfs. As some 6s players would just use the sticky jumper, Get to mid quickly and one shot the medic. It turned into a Vita Saw situation where if one Demo used it, The other basically had to as well. Which got banned back then.
Dumb reason and like a couple other weapons I really wish they reworked it rather then flat nerf (Eviction Notice, Base Jumper etc)

Funky "buff" idea: Caber strength is based on your stickybomb's strength so you can't shield or sticky jumper with it.

check out bad weapon rehabilitation (its a community server) it has a buffed caber that does 10% more damage
If demo got the gunboats, the reduced self-damage from that would make the Caber a whole lot better. Not by much, but it'd be a noticeable improvement
I know nothing about balancing but it would be cool if you could get it back from large ammo packs
the biggest issue with it before the nerf was that it had so much rampup and damage on the explosion, you could just aim striaght down at the floor and swing it and instant kill any scout or spy within like 4 feet of you. it would be fine if it was able to oneshot if it required an actual direct hit.
There used to be a caberknight master dominating the team in asian servers. Everyone feared him by the name of "the clown"
Make it good for both, recharge the caber on charge, let you hit the ground to jump at the cost of a caber charge.
Ive been using caber for awhile, it's the only thing that im good at playing as Demo but watching this video made me learned how much fun Caberknights had back then. Really make me wish to play tf2 earlier

For my idea. The caber should be changed to a someone well known tf2 classic item. Where demoman can throw TNT instead replace the TNT for the caber and I think it would be pretty good.

-10% attack speed
-20% damage penalty
Any crit will convert to mini crit on this weapon
The explosive can recharge and can be boost by dealing damage
This force you to play hybrid knight and use damage from primary to charge the caber other wise you just stuck with shitty meele with no crit
And lastly revert explosive damage to 100 so a mini crit from caber explosi e should be able to kill any class except heavy
I would like to add a cooldown maybe 40.s after explosion, after that It could explode again
Make it explode only on crit or mini-crit and have is always minicrit after a sticky jump or charge (it would still crit from the charge if you wait long enough, but it could minicrit with the charge instantly). Also it should be throwable with similar damage to a pipe but have a bigger radius, then be chargable after being exploded with damage and time. That way it gets use out of shield and sticky launcher users without being broken. basically make it a high damage burst option you need to replenish after using. The damage and swing speed would be balanced around the way it works so it doesn't feel cheap, but is still useful.
It would be cool if we had any way to refill caber outside of resupply. Either by picking up large ammo packs or just waiting a certain time.
Personally for me, I think the only buff I’d give is probably a recharge meter (whenever you get a kill it fills itself up a little bit similar to the the eyelander.)

make it deal 125 exact damage. give it a recharge timer of 20 seconds. Make it deal mini-crits with shields (currently a bug) and for the love of god remove that 100% slower switch speed... there i fixed it.
Honestly I prefer the caber idea where:
It does a clean 125 damage point blank, but also deals 125 damage to the user. High risk high reward.
I never thought of making the Caber the "Market Gardener for Demo" put when you put it like that, it does make a lot of sense. I am not sure on how exactly one should change the stats, but I think valve could and should make some kind of a high-risk-high-meme weapon out of it just like the Market Gardener.

I've tried fooling around with the caber and at some point, it dealt at least 300+ damage to a enemy heavy who recieved it. Note that this was in a 100% crit server and said heavy didnt have the warriors spirit or the buffalo steak, meaning that theoretically, you can one shot no overheal heavies due to some weird thing in the source engine somehow registering 2 caber hits instead of 1 (I believe) and lag.
So true. I did almost all of my demoman contracts with just caberknight. It's one of my favorite weapons in the game, and I would love for it to be buffed at least back to its former glory. I don't really like the market gardener idea, though, as I think the weapon's simplicity is the key to its brilliance and caberknight does need the buff. Additionally, I definitely think the explosion should get minicrits from the Tide Turner, as you pretty much can't use it with the caber due to it not increasing the explosion damage like the other shields. If I were to buff it, I'd increase it's damage enough to 1-shot light classes again and add a meter you could refill with ammo packs (4 small ammo packs, 2 medium ones, or 1 large) to restock your caber without returning to spawn, that way you can actually use it on the second point of Gorge or other maps where spawn is far away. If this were too powerful, I'd say reduce the melee hit's damage such that it still breaks the threshold to 1-shot with the explosion on light classes but is even worse on its own.
The caber was nerfed because in comp, you could jump in, kill their medic, jump out (or die). Caber knight ''bombings'' never were the problem and you can still do them today.
This probly sound overpower but it would be cool if the caber can be reload if the player pickup the medium/large ammo case

Never really understood most nerfs to weapons like these; with the Caber you can at best get one or two kills before you become a worse Demoknight until you hit the resupply or die.
You don't need to buff the cable you just need to Nerf sniper

I think the caber could be a cool gimmick like this:
major damage increase to enemy buildings on explosion.
removes enemy sappers.
with the classic no critical hits, and limited damage to players.
this would give demo a new way to be an anti-mech, that way short-circuit engineers cant just zap away pipes or stickies. and running full speed into an enemy strongpoint with a grenade is peak demoman

The switch to speed needs to be removed, yes.
What I would do, is give the grenade head a 30 second and a 300 damage recharge as well as something like "when this weapon is out, plus15% blast damage resistance to wearer" , which would make the Caberknights have more staying power and more peaks instead of a "go explode something, survive to to spawn, repeat" cycle.
now, should we give it a Market Gardner like buff or something like "when sticky jumping and shield charging, get crits" which could work for both bomb and exploded bomb caber.
What I also want to know, should the Caber and let's say the Scottish resistance have the Taunt where the Demo smacks the other person as a taunt kill, yes or no? if yes is the case, make the Demo's stock bottle give 20% HP aka small health pack level health gain on drink that could overheal.

Caber just needs more damage tbh. It just doesn't kill anymore, you sacrifice so much and get very little now.

The biggest problem with the caber is its ability to get an early medic kill in competitive. Demo can bum rush the enemy team as soon as the round starts, suicide into the medic, and giving his team an incredibly early uber advantage which can usually snowball the game. It was a niche surprise strategy but an op one if the team was unprepared for it.
How the caber is now is not good because it's not fun to play or useful but restoring it to what it was only brings back the reason why it was nerfed.
I’d rather have the caber’s damage multiplied by how fast you’re traveling, (makes it good with shields, trumping, surfing and sticky jumping) opposed to it being solely a market gardener, but that’s just me.
I've used the caber a lot. So I kind of have opinions on it. It is 100% my favourite demoman weapon and it's biggest drawback is that you get to use it once, and it's useless. Valve seems to love making Demoman the grounded gimmick character, and the Soldier the aerial gimmick character. With that in mind, I had some ideas. I think that the caber is fine right now in terms of damage, especially as a caber knight farming for crits. So maybe, you could get the explosive back on a timer like other weapons, and getting a crit kill will either fill the bar or almost fill it. That would make it a much more usable weapon in terms of sustainability. Which it so desperately needs. And I don't think it would be too absurd for snowballing because you can ONLY get crit kills with it at the very ass end of a charge. Disallowing people to mow through crowds like you can with a half-zatoichi or something.
