    Polished my new 686 performance revolver and it is BEAUTIFUL. Started with 1500 grit, then 2000, 2500 and finally mothers mag wheel polish. About 6 hours of work, but the finish rivals any factory high polish finish I've ever seen.

    Nice revolver, GunBlastdotcom. People still buy revolvers because they're dependable working guns. A revolver makes a good handgun to take along hunting, fishing, camping or use as a house-gun. Old granny ladies can even use a revolver; the design makes using a revolver almost intuitive.

    With the moon clips all types of ammo and primers worked perfectly. It is suppose to function with or without moon clips but I am pleased that at least it functions well with the moon clips. I appreciate your reply.

    I have a Smith & Wesson 357 Magnum 4 inch barrel model 686 it's a collector's item because it was made before it was called Smith & Wesson Performance Center. I absolutely love it!!

    Carried a standard 686 4” in a duty capacity, for years. I love the revolver. It’s an amazing shooter, and I’d continue to trust my life to one. That’s a sweet upgrade to the standard.

    I have the gun in a 5 inch. I love the trigger pull. It's butter smooth in both single and double action. The front orange blade is way easy to pick up in a hurry. Reloads are made easier with the cylinder speed latch. It is an outstanding revolver. I also have the same gun with a 3.5 inch barrel. The five inch was definitely superior in that the trigger pull on the 3.5 inch was rough. I had a gun smith smooth it out. The grip on the 3.5 inch is wood. These are both wonderful revolvers.

    You keep referring to this revolver having a 4" barrel. I believe the 6-shot model has a 4" barrel and the 7-shot version has a 5" barrel. Not really keen on the 7-shot models but I dig the 5" barrel.

      The specs on the screen do state that the bbl length is five inches.

      Yep. Too quick on the trigger I guess. I saw that after I typed my remarks. Just bought a new 6" 686. If this gun had been available with a 6 shot cylinder and 5" barrel I would have bought it instead.

      you can definitely get the 7 shot 686 with a 4" barrel. hell they make the 7 shot in 3" 4" 5" 6"

      Not this particular 686. When I posted i was speaking about the Performance Center 686+ in Quinn's video. The 7 shot model of this revolver is only available in a 5" barrel and not a 4" version.

    Smith and Wesson circa 1860's: "Lets go with fluted cylinders, it'll look more modern"

    It is suppose to shoot with or without the moon clips but it seems like mine has excessive head space without the moon clips. Saturday I will try it with the moon clips.

    "Ach du lieber, mein freund" Mr. Jeff! Another fine gun review as always. WHY do most every S & W revolvers show that "hideous" cylinder score mark made by the locking bolt??? While they may be TIMED OK, I say they are NOT TUNED as they could be! Some score marks are almost "brutal" to look at!! I have a beautifully timed & tuned .36 Navy Arms Confederate brass framed Colt replica that I bought about 50 years ago that doesn't show a hint of any cylinder score marks! It locks up tighter than any new revolver I've ever seen, including S & W's!!! What say ye, besides "Whoopi ky yo"?! AND, yes, I will go up to $3.50 for a guided tour of your beard!!!!! But only if the weather is good!

    I wanted a 686 Plus as a training gun to introduce new shooters, and hemmed and hawed between this and the ordinary 4". I went with the ordinary 4" (which I promptly lost in an unfortunate boating accident), and looking at this PC version now, I'm surprised it was even a contest. The ordinary version is a gorgeous gun to look at, and this is... not.

    I think Ruger has something like that now also, 7 shot 357...

    • @vanillagorilla9841
      @vanillagorilla9841 6 років тому +2

      They do, but Ruger uses a different type of metallurgy in there production which is inherently weaker than the metals Smith and Wesson uses. So Ruger makes up for this by using more metal for their revolvers frame so it will match the tolerances for a Smith and Wesson, thereby giving the Ruger revolvers more weight to the revolver. That being said I love both companies revolvers and wouldn't hesitate to buy either one, it just falls to preference really.

      Wasn't there a test done a while ago that proved Ruger's cast steel is no weaker than S&W's forged steel? IIRC the author concluded Ruger simply makes their guns beefier for overpressure loads.

    • @lonewanderer3603
      @lonewanderer3603 6 років тому +1

      Kip Kleimenhagen That's why you have never seen loadings for "Smith & Wesson only." There are some extremely hot rounds made for Blackhawk/Redhawk and Thompson Center guns that would blow the frame apart in a Smith.

    I have one that only fires with soft standard pistol primers. It hardly makes a mark on the small pistol magnum primers. Going to try it with moon clips next time. TK custom said to try a full power leaf spring and extended firing pin, I tried that and it still has light primer strikes. Can you recommend a solution so mine shoots like yours?

      @@Gunblastdotcom yes. They said to make sure that the strain screw was tightened down all the way. Then they sent me a new leaf spring and strain screw. When that didn't work they said to call TK Custom. TK said it should shoot better with moon clips and the extended firing pin. Do you have any other suggestions?

    I have loved every 686 I've ever laid my eyes on... But between that tapered lug, gigantic front sight, and abortion of a cylinder lock... That is NOT and attractive Smith & Wesson revolver. And the sad part is, all that ugly cost a LOT extra.

      They time these so that the locking bolt drops early. Perfect timing would have the bolt drop only in the locking notch, but when speed-shooting double action, the bolt can miss the notch. That is why it is set to drop early.
