How's she goin'? Well Jason, a dado is something that isn't used all that often. My old one was almost 50 years old!! But when you need one it's nice to have one that is sharp and has multiple width settings available. And this one was even a decent price!! LOL Take 'er easy!!

That's a nice looking dado stack Mike. I also like when the tool comes in a decent box. Now that you have a new stack when you get your storage boxes done you can try sharpening the old dado stack. It's easier than you would think.

I had a buddy, Ron and he's dead now, God rest his soul, who was a ship's carpenter at the Pictou Shipyards in Pictou, NS. Ron was about 80 or so at the time. I had an old chisel that I spent quite a while sharpening myself and figured it was pretty sharp. So I asked Ron if he could sharpen it, expecting full well he would say "Mike this is as sharp as it can get". Ron took a look at it and said, "Well Mike, I think we can save this one." And he wasn't laughing either!! He had a set up just using a bench grinder with not even a buffing wheel on it and he sharpened, and I mean sharpened, that chisel in no time at all. With the mail on strike Amazon is posting "Order it now and we'll tell you when it can ship." This has had the favorable effect of having me order NOTHIN'. That's good for my bank account but I do miss ordering stuff. The dado blade stack looks good and the boxes are top-notch, especially painted.

A must tool to have and it expands the number of projects that you can take on. Looks like you found good value in the set you bought. I have used a $300 dollar set and it was a dream to use but if you don't use it all of the time, it is not worth it. I have an adjustable one too but for wide dados, say like 3/4", it makes the bottom of the dado curved and so it doesn't glue up too good when the piece is put in the dado. But the adjustable ones are great! A lot easier to set up than this type. Thanks for tuning and take care!!

I have an adjustable one too but it's a wobble type and when cutting a 3/4" dado for example the bottom of the dado is curved and the piece to go into it doesn't fit too good for glue ups. This set is pretty decent and for the money, and the amount I will use it after this 'box' project, I think it will be just what the doc ordered!! Thanks for the watch Steve! Take 'er easy!!
Hi Mike. Ahh, New toys for the shop eh. I have always sharpened all my tools. You're really careful with all your tools but have you tried sharpening the Dato Stack ? Lee Valley has some great diamond faced carbide sharpening hand tools. They have a new one now that is about the size of a steel file that has caught my eye. It will be great for chippers to forsner bits. Just follow the existing profiles and tickedebo. On the Dato stack side saws I'm thinking they will have to go to a saw shop as the teeth on the side saws are just too fine for a good point and gullet job by hand. Great to see you this fine day old friend.

@@GrampiesWorkshop Hey Mike. My dad showed me starting with garden sheers and lawnmower blades. From there I worked smaller. I found I work at 2 parts of a tooth at the same time. Now days it is cheaper to buy a new handsaw than to take one in and have it sharpened. Many of the nice old handsaws are now gone or forgoten about. Such a shame.
I bought this same dado set back in June 2022 Mike, ( then it was $55.77 plus HST) it does cut the dados nicely in my projects, but I have to be fair, it is not as clean a cut as my old Craftsman set does. The Craftsman 6 inch dado blade is a 'wobble' type and is in perfect balance no matter the width I set it to. Still sharp after all these years, I guess I have been very careful of what I cut with it. They don't seem to offer this 'wobble balanced' set anymore,... pity. But this 8 inch Tooltech set does the job well, and I am glade I bought them.

I know it wasn't the most expensive or the cheapest, but when I got it it sure looked like a decent set. I have a wobble blade dado too. I find with those types, although the balance wasn't an issue, the dados, especially say the 3/4" ones, had a curved bottom and that sometimes would cause issues when joining a piece to it. I looked and looked and finally found one that was a generic fit. It wasn't exactly what the humidifier needed, but I needed a filter so I bought it and it's working but not great. How's she goin'? Actually Bill, cutting across the grain have me a much cleaner crisp cut line. With the grain tended to pull the wood fibers and splinter and have more tear out. I ordered a few things last Tuesday ad had them shipped direct to the camp and they arrived in 2 days!! Amazing Amazon!! LOL This dado stack is doing pretty good. I'm pleased with it and for the price I think it's a winner!!

Well i am glad you will make more boxes & i like your new tool. Amazon is a great place to shop, i buy pretty much everything there . I just ordered a Christmas present & it will be here tomorrow. I don't know much about saws & that but you explain them so clearly that i will easily remember them. I am glad that Amazon is paying you a few cents for demo...ing a tool...you are very good at that. So i am glad you will be back making more b0xes. See you Fri. Love ya

Never used a dado blade before. Been playing with the idea if getting one. I see your link there but I'm not sure about ordering anything from Amazon right now until after the postal strike. Thanks and take care!

How's she goin"? Amazon is putting a lot of places out of business I dare say. Like today I went to Canadian Tire to get a filter for our humidifier. I looked and looked and finally found one that was a generic fit. It wasn't exactly what the humidifier needed, but I needed a filter so I bought it and it's working but not great. On Amazon you can get the exact one and it's often time for less money. You just have to wait to get it is all. Thanks for commenting. Take 'er easy!

How's she goin'? Actually Bill, cutting across the grain have me a much cleaner crisp cut line. With the grain tended to pull the wood fibers and splinter and have more tear out.
