    Some useful gumpf; click on SHOW MORE (just below).
    It's scored, as always, using Sibelius 7.5
    The piano part was created in Presonus Studio One v3.5 using Hollow Sun's RMI Electrapiano running thru FabFilter EQ & GSi's GS-201 Tape Echo.
    The vocals come from the centre channel of the 5.1 DVD mixes and some (very dry) parts are going thru a touch of Valhalla Plate reverb.
    Without any other instrumentation, Peter's vocals do sound somewhat exposed here, but I personally feel that this gives a feel for just how expressive & emotive a voice he has.
    As per normal for my videos, there's very little in the way of dynamic, expressive, tempi or pedal markings; I find they just get in the way of the notes :)
    Listening to the originals and to this version should be enough to guide you as to the way it's intended to sound.
    Talking of which, this transcription is actually based on THREE originals!
    1) The studio version from The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
    2) A live version from Genesis Archive 1967-75 (Live '75)
    3) The Seconds Out live version
    The intro and first verse & chorus are played the same in all 3 versions - except, of course, the intro had been dropped by the time of Seconds Out, but you know what I mean hopefully :)
    The differences are in how Tony played the left hand during the choruses from the 2nd chorus onwards (the verses are still the same in each).
    The choruses of versions 1 and 2 are almost identical except for the 2nd & 3rd bars (bars 34 & 35 in the PDF) which are swapped.
    A VERY minor difference but I personally prefer the Live '75 version and I guess Tony did too so I'm in good company! :)
    The chorus of version 3 (Seconds Out) is much simpler; essentially just octave root notes.
    Which way you choose to play the choruses is, of course, entirely up to you; I've just included them all here for reference.
    In the video, the audio is based on the following for each of the four Verses/Choruses (VC) and the outro (VC5):
    VC1 = Verse 1
    VC2 = Studio version
    VC3 = Live '75
    VC4 = Seconds Out
    VC5 = Seconds Out
    Now for the intro…
    The actual notes are the same as in the middle of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway track.
    But, they're played in a different style. I've deduced this from the many versions (around a dozen of each) that I have of Carpet Crawl & The Lamb.
    Whereas I believe that The Lamb is played in a strict alternate Right Hand, Left Hand (RLRLRLRL) style (see my Lamb Lies Down YT video for an explanation - • Genesis - The Lamb Lie... ), it's far more difficult trying to do that with Carpet Crawl because it's played at a much faster tempo. In fact, one version I have from Scotland in 1975 goes at breakneck speed!
    I don't know for sure exactly how Tony played it (not having seen any video close-ups) but the way I've notated it seems as good a way as any :)
    In the first 4 bars you play every note with the RH except the lowest note (RRRRLRRR).
    Then you swap to a sort of cross hands style where you play the first note of each quadruplet using the LH thumb or pinky and the rest of the notes with the right hand (LRRRLRRR).
    This explains the 'missing' notes that separate the above two different styles as you need a split-second to adjust your hands! These notes are missing on all the versions I have of Tony playing this piece, so I'm reasonably confident that this may well be how he played it :)
    That's it; have fun! :)

    Great! How did you get the isolated voice of Peter? Thanks

      As I mention in the description above, I get any original audio that I use in my videos from the 5.1 DVD mixes that were part of the 2007 Hybrid SACD + DVD re-issues.
      I have the 5-album, 13-disc box-set (currently selling for stupidly large sums if you can find it) covering Trespass to The Lamb and also Trick and Wind. Never bothered with anything later as I already had it all on vinyl and ordinary CD and didn't feel the need to have the new mixes.
      Not that I dislike their music from Three thru to Dance (forget Stations!); unlike a lot of 70's Genesis fans, I also like a lot of tracks from the post-Hackett era (I feel his leaving was more of a loss to the band than Peter departing).

      @@ElektrikHob Dumb question, but does the SACD allow for a Quadraphonic Mix of the earlier albums? If it does, I'm so gonna invest in such. I'll have to get an SACD player, though, too. lol

      The SACD is a simple Hybrid type as it can play on a regular CD player.
      So I'm pretty sure that it only plays in stereo (albeit MUCH better quality) on a SACD player, but I don't have one to confirm.
      It's the accompanying DVD disc that contains the 5.1 surround mix. This will play on any DVD player and you can choose playback in either DTS96/24 or Dolby Digital (Dolby AC-3).
      So if you have a home theatre system, you can play it and get full surround-sound audio :)
      I extracted the 6 audio channels from this DVD into a MKV file which I can then import into Audacity to get at the individual channels for each song.
      I think I created the MKV file using Handbrake (I'm a Mac man) but as I did this a few years ago, I can't be entirely sure...!
      I'm sure you could easily find something on the internet if you wanted to do the same thing :)

    As an almost life- long lover of Genesis (and YES) music, a stupid question: how did you isolate the singing track from the underlying keyboard track (of Tony Banks)?

      As briefly mentioned in the above info (hit SHOW MORE), Peter's voice comes from the centre channel of the 2007 5.1 DVD mixes.
      I now have these DVD audio files for every studio album from Trespass to Abacab though that wasn't the case a few months back which is why, for example, Undertow doesn't have Phil's vocal on whereas Many Too Many (more recent) does.

    Have you ask Tony how to play?

    • @ElektrikHob
      @ElektrikHob  3 роки тому +1

      To confirm the way he plays the intro...? I have no way of contacting Tony though I do sometimes wonder if anyone else who knows him has pointed him at my channel... Naturally, I'd love to know what he thinks, but sadly I doubt that will ever happen.
