    Some useful gumpf; click on SHOW MORE (just below).
    It's scored, as usual, with Sibelius 7.5
    The piano audio was created in Presonus Studio One v4.5 using Modartt’s Pianoteq 7 Steingraeber Grand piano and processed thru Valhalla’s Vintage Verb.
    Peter’s vocals and Steve’s guitar parts come from the centre channel of the 5.1 DVD mixes.
    Except Steve’s ‘scratchy’ bit from bars 98-113; this wasn’t on the centre channel, so I had to either have nothing there (apart from the piano of course) or sort of recreate it which is what I’ve done. It’s not exactly the same but I think it’ll do 😉
    I guess this is an unusual one to attempt to transcribe for solo piano but (along with all the other videos I’ve so far released) this was a track I initially worked out in my mid-teens that I used to really enjoy thumping away at on the piano! 😊
    So I decided to revisit it and tidy it up a bit ready for public consumption.
    I think it works, mainly because of the tripletty piano bits (Intro & Section C) and I feel the verses (Sections A & B) have come out pretty well too. Of course, the really loud ending was an issue, but hopefully the way I’ve addressed it works OK; I certainly find it a lot of fun to ‘go nuts’ on!! 😂
    I’m pretty sure this piece (as solo piano) isn’t going to appeal to as many as say, Moon/Fifth/Vine/Rope or even Lamia/Undertow/Rooftops, but that’s OK; it is what it is and it can still prove useful as a starting point for anyone wanting to perform it using the original piano/organ/mellotron sounds in a band context.
    I’ve based my transcription on the Nursery Cryme album version, but I also made extensive use of the awesome Belgian TV performance from 1972 - • Genesis Live 1972 The ...
    Any comments in the PDF about who plays what are based on that video.
    Also, I’ve incorporated some of Mike’s bass playing & style in the LH to give the piece some ‘bounce’.
    Use the sustain pedal from Section C onwards but avoid it before then... 😉
    Loads more performance hints in the PDF!
    Have fun! 👍

    All these compositions from the golden era of Genesis are able to give us pleasure and interest after hundreds, thousands of listenings : this is a proof of their great value, of their thickness. You dig it and it's perfect, including the singing, which is not the easiest part. Thumbs up for Genesis and for you.

      Glad to've been of help 👍
      As I allude to in the PDF notes, in bars 48-56 Tony actually plays (on organ with '2nd percussion' turned on) just the lower two notes of those 'power' chords (A5 etc.) and the D (bar50) and Eb (bar55) chords - as can be seen in ua-cam.com/video/P4q7-wZmn-Q/v-deo.html
      With the G & Ab chords (in those same two bars), he's sustaining the two lower notes (in my transcription) and also the 5th of the chord (D & Eb respectively) below the root and 3rd (which of course means that at that point he's now actually only bouncing the root note with his left hand rather than root and 5th).
      And that Bb5 is definitely the inversion I've written rather than being similar to all the other 'power' inversions, as might've been expected 😎

      @@ElektrikHob Thank you for that. OK, I WILL nitpick: bar 26 is clearly 12/8, and therefore bar 32 the 6/8, but it's obviously easier to score the repeat the way you do it. :-D

    • @ElektrikHob
      @ElektrikHob  3 роки тому +5

      @@sigil5772 I KNEW you'd spot that! 😂 And, yes, if I hadn't used the 'repeat' notation then I would've scored it the correct way as you suggested 😆

      I've never really worked them out (for piano at least) as it's very difficult to make them (and Watcher/Friday etc.) sound good on solo piano.
      Unless you're David Myers! But then his versions are stylistically VERY different to how I would do them!
      As you all know from the videos I've posted, I prefer sticking to the Genesis interpretation rather than adding my own flourishes... 😉
      Maybe at some point in the future I might tackle them but don't hold your breath for too long... 😂

    • @ElektrikHob
      @ElektrikHob  3 роки тому +5

      I use the 5.1 DVD-Audio re-issues from 2007. The centre channel almost always contains all the lead vocals on their own and sometimes some lead instrument stuff too.
      In this case, as you can hear, Peter's voice and Steve's guitar slides at the end of each 'verse' were both on the centre track (which wasn't ideal).
      Plus, the 'scratchy' guitar bit between Steve's two 'solos' was missing from the centre track (it was mixed on the other 4 tracks) so I had to (sort of) recreate it.

      I'd noticed the same when playing some of In the Cage (and other bits from The Lamb) from the sheet music around the same time i was slogging through the sight reading of some of JSB's stuff early in the WTC book (albeit at a snail's pace, and i'd since forgotten it as Prelude #2). Anyway it was just so similar when looking at them both on the page that i couldn't help but assume it was his inspiration as well..

      I have slipped a snip of Dies Irae into stuff i'd played before, though i only know the progression in Dm. It can be fun to draw from if you're e.g. playing in a band with guitarists in drop-D tuning..
