      Right wing "infighting" is actually very rare, ever since the Tea Party movement swept up a majority of Libertarians into the right, they have clearly divided sectionalism, which hate all of the others.
      This is one of the few times it *is* infighting (pundits with the same paypigs) within the same camp. They are only unified on a few key areas, like abortion.
      Left wing has been going the opposite direction, with factions arising from a few *big* disagreements (Israel vs Palestine, blm vs "intersectionalism") but otherwise the groups all overlap on ideas like environment and renewable energy.

    There are two theories of politics, mistake theory and conflict theory. In mistake theory, people generally have the same principles and interests, but some of them are mistaken about the results of policies they put forward. This means differences are reconcilable if people just learn more.
    In conflict theory, people have opposing principles and interests and thus their preferences are not reconcilable.

    I can kind of see who his target audience with this argument is, at least the dollar store part. He’s not trying to disprove John Oliver or even Tucker Carlson’s arguments against dollar stores. He’s aiming for the kind of people who HEARD that Dollar Stores are being criticized, but haven’t heard the arguments; specifically, the kind of people who shop at the dollar store because otherwise they couldn’t afford Christmas decorations or school supplies or milk. The kind of people who have heard plenty of “ew you shop at the dollar store? Grossss” comments in their day.
    Ben is talking to that group and basically saying “yeah exactly, these elitists just look down on you for shopping at the dollar store. There’s no wider criticism here, don’t look into it. They just think the stores are ugly and want to replace them with something you can’t afford. They’d rather you stood in a bread line, or starved. Don’t listen to them, listen to me, I understand you.”
    What’s interesting is this is basically useless as a way of bringing people to his side-it only functions to keep people who are already listening from seeking other views or thinking deeper about the problems. It’s defense, not offense.

      It's like you're trying to explain how a treatment to stop a disease is hurting someone in a different way (draining life and local business from the community in a way that makes everyone poorer in the long term) and he goes "But what are we (they) going to do without those cheap prices? We (they) can't afford that, what other option is there?" Basically trying to convince them that, for any faults, this is the best it could possibly be and shutting down any idea of an alternative. Conservatism relies on the idea that things can't be better. The softer versions that we've reached the peak and its time to stop. I still find people that defend trickle-down economics and it's equal parts hilarious and sad. Recently, a lot of my more conservative friends have championed the GOP's 2017 tax cuts by claiming the tax overhaul is benefiting the middle class. I'll nod along, and then point out those 'middle-class-friendly' tax provisions have already started to sunset, yet the corporate income tax rates are still reduced, as are the production credits for pass-through business entities, all of which overwhelmingly benefit the wealthy. This is when they try to save themselves by pivoting to tired Reagonomics talking points by stating wealthy people should get tax breaks since they're paying the working class's wages. This transitions to a discussion about wealthy investors not being idiots, and since they're not idiots, they'll consistently invest in the opportunities with the best expected ROI; if that happens to be human capital, then they'll make that investment regardless of the tax rate since they will get tax deductions for payroll costs. There's a simple thought experiment that illustrates the breakdown of trickle-down economic theory: _assume $100K is deposited to your account, and assume you had a foreign investment opportunity with an expected ROI roughly twice that of investing the funds into (U.S.)business' payroll. So how would you invest the money._
    I've posed this question multiple times over the past ~20 years to point out the flaws of supply-side economics, and funny enough no one has ever just acknowledged that this is a failure point; alternatively, no one has ever made a strong counter argument against this point. The most common response is a weak argument positing the foreign investment will lead back to the U.S. economy (►there's so many holes in this argument, but at least it's loosely tethered to reality). My favorite responses are the ones that crank the cognitive dissonance all the way to MAX -- like the person who argued my question was fundamentally flawed because the U.S. is the strongest economy in the world, so the expected ROI for a foreign investment could never exceed the U.S. based investment. Another person claimed that the reason the ROI for the investment into U.S. labor was so low is because the workers were lazy, even though I specifically indicated that it's a demand-side issue, the person still insisted that the modern U.S. worker is too lazy. When I hear crap like that, then I know it's time to end the discussion because they're either really dumb or they're operating in bad faith, neither of which I'm going to be able to fix with facts and logic.

    • @briannoel7398
      @briannoel7398 7 місяців тому

      I don't know how they can argue that we workers are more lazy, when we continually produce more GDP per capita at a rate greater than inflation. Despite that, our money means less and less year after year. Add to that the fact that only 10% of the U.S. GDP is even in circulation, meaning that us workers don't even get to see or put hands on 90% of the value we produce.

    Honestly, I really agree with the "dollar stores are ugly" complaint. Back in the 90s, stores were awesome... there was ton of effort put into the architecture and advertising because they were trying to be as eye-catching as possible. The result was some really cool, colorful postmodern design that may or may not be cocaine-fueled. They were a far-cry from the walkable downtown areas of the early-1900s, but the difference in ugliness between retail now and even 20 years ago is very noticeable.
    Dollar stores, and by extension, all chain stores for the past decade suck because they're depressing, minimalist, drab shitholes that don't even try to hide the fact that they're warehouses. They no longer have to look appealing, because like 5 companies dominate everything.

    I'm just a visitor here, I don't subscribe to any of the 3 involved. But all them seem insufferable. Vausch has a way of talking that alienates the normal people. He's just spouting talking points about how everyone is a fascist and evil and it's kind of gross. nothing here was fascist, like at all, yet it gets tossed around so casually now that I truly believe that nobody really understands it anymore. it's like the word has become a caricature of itself.

    Numbers are weird. If you scraped off 50 trillion off of the top 20% and redistributed it equally then _every single person in the USA_ could get a $150 000 "Christmas bonus" from the state. The top 20% would still be absurdly rich after it.

    This voosh fellow has a point at 15:45. With automation and AI set to eliminate many if not almost all current jobs a return to a more "artisanal" economy would seem the best way to let people remain productive, which is important for mental health, in a post work world.
